4 Stages of Creativity

  • What is it that separates an ordinary DJ from an extraordinary DJ? How do great "beat jugglers" and scratchers come up with the most brilliant ideas? Curiosity is the answer and my recent training session with my student Michael will attest to that.
As DJs, all of us go through the same four stages of creativity:
PREPARATION - you start off gathering the information (Who, What, When, Where and How), the materials (gear and music), and the inspiration (studying tutorials like this or getting physical lessons).
INCUBATION: as you begin to develop a grasp of how to go about proper DJing, ideas simmer. It's like your conscious mind goes in auto pilot and the preparation stage continues to happen naturally. But subconsciously your mind is already working on ways of expanding on the different techniques you're feeding it.
ILLUMINATION: this is when that Eureka moment happens! You're practicing and you hear yourself do something that makes you go "OH SHIT".
VERIFICATION: Following the aha moment, you commit to the idea and you start asking questions. "How can I make that #beatjuggle pattern or scratch sound better?", "What if I apply this move to that song?", it's like through critical thinking you hone in on your skills to help you communicate the value in your idea.
The difference between the ordinary DJ and the extraordinary DJ is one gets to the ILLUMINATION stage and lets the same mind that got him/her there, kill their curiosity with thoughts of "This is too hard.", "I'll never finish this.", "People may not like it."
Always follow through with your curiosity. Execution is what makes things happen.
