How to fix a dental air-water syringe

- After a while dental air/water syringe buttons become sticky and through continued use may also leak water. With some new parts, some simple tools, and about 3 minutes you can do this yourself very easily!
"if you can't do this, then you shouldn't be fixing people's teeth", I can second that. This actually could be said about pretty much any maintenance you have to do in the office. Preferring to pay someone else to spend the needed time instead of you, is a whole different matter obviously.

Wipe the hole with a cotton tipped applicator with a little vinegar to keep the new buttons from sticking

You don’t need an L wrench or paper clip to push the thin bar out. The 3 way stainless steel tip is designed for pushing that out.
hi chrystian. Cool! I've just been doing it the way I was taught... by the older doctor that previously owned my office. What 3 way stainless steel tip are you talking about? Does this instrument come in the syringe replacement kit? If you could reply with a picture, it would be helpful to everyone. Thanks for your feedback.
No just your regular stainless steel 3 way water syringe tip you use on the daily and sterilize. Never tried the disposable ones. The end that goes into the unit is thin enough to fit inside and push out the thin bar. Try it out. No L wrench necessary Just a small tip. You might still need pliers to pull the bar out.

Yesterday, I was asked to help a tech take apart a DCI 3430 with a bent pin (DC9648) She had been taught to use a nail and a hammer to remove pin to rebuild the air water buttons. I purchased a tool --- 1/16 pin punch to remove tough stuck pin. Harbor freight and Home Depot sell a set "small pin punch kit" with 1/16 (1.6mm) 3/32 & 1/8" for under $9 or ebay has a seller that has a 2 pack of deluxe plastic coated punch (1/16') for $6 pp
But after further investigation --- I see ebay sells the syringe for as little at $7 pp new.Crazy disposable world we live in makes it almost as econ to cha age syringe out as to rebuild it when you consider labor time of staff.
John O'Connor you are welcome. Posted this alternative almost a year ago haha thanks for the reply. Used to work for a company to repair equipment now I’m a trainer for ct and intra oral scanners such as 3Shape and medit. Have so many other tricks up my sleeves in the dental field.
Your front desk should have filled that appointment. Did you get a DDS to repair equipment?

Sonia Manzano hi sonia. sorry i didn’t read this very fast. did you ever figure it out on your own? i have’t had that experience myself with dental syringes but i do fix many other things and my guesses would be the following 1) not exact sizes of o-rings and parts.. maybe there’s a repair kit that’s more exact 2) air water housing is bad 3) there is water IN your air line... which is common but really not good ever. if it is number 3 it can mess up your compressor and you should get a tech to inspect.
