This is where buying a quality set of calipers is a solid investment. You can measure the width, the inside diameter and the outside diameter and order bearings for a fraction of what you'd pay a manufacturer. Consider the example of my Powermatic bandsaw, the upper and lower bearing guides use five bearings each. From Powermatic, they are twenty each. That's two hundred dollars. By measuring the bearing, I was able to buy a container of eight for four bucks. Two containers gave me spares, all for sixteen bucks and shipping around five bucks. With that kind of savings, I was able to jump up to ceramic bearings, which are worth cleaning. Just make sure you order the sealed type bearings. Interestingly, I found packing my bearings nearly full of grease helped keep dust out. While my saws are much bigger than these hand grinders/drills, the same cost savings rule applies, if you buy from a bearing supplier. All the above aside, thanks for showing how easy it would be to get to the bearings in my RAM carver hand piece.
Dealer was right, the bearings of low speed carbon brush driven hand pieces are not serviceable, this hand pieces are high maintenance tools and you need to replace the bearings often soon after starting to make unusual noises and vibration, no grease, no oil, no WD 40 or any type of lubricant, just change the bearings with good high speed rating bearings specially lubricated for that purpose, don't service the already worn bearings, they may show some kind of relief after your "SERVICE" but defiantly its waste of time.
Ok you put it back together so fast, and now i cant figure it out. Cant find a manual either helphelp. I know this video is old but the only one avail...someone guide me please
Very interesting video. Little bit unnecessary. You did say you enjoy it though. I do think that if you can pull it apart you can replace bearings yourself no need for an agent $100 is crazy. These parts are easily bought online from Korea or even China, I would not be surprised if that was where the original ones came from anyway. Definitely far less than $10 including shipping and most probably you will want new clips too as the original will probably be out of shape. In fact that entire transfer can be bought brand new online for less than $10. Its easier to remove those clips with a flat blade as a matter of interest. Great fun video thank you.
The reason I have cleaned the hand-piece (bearings and all) is for a video and the inability to access replacement parts. If anyone has a catalogue and/or part numbers pass them on. Its not a perfect process and it is faster when not being filmed. I know it is easier to replace parts but in a pinch it works.
You need to check the size of the bearing measure the shaft that go through on the inside as well as actual bearing dimensions outside. Easily bought online.
bearing take apart, then should dip into the alcohol to take out the dust, should not use the swab to grease the bearing, it will bring the firber into the bearing. why i know this, cuz i am the miniature manufacture.
What not to do in a practice. Those bearings cost $10 each. Technician time is about $1 per minute. That is $30 for a job that should never have been done, and won't last, even on a slow speed piece. It takes me about 5 min to do that job, $20 for both bearings. $25 total. He's already spent $30 and only did one bearing. The cage in the bearing goes first. Most of the time when you open them up, balls fall out of cage because it is deteriorated. I guess this is nice to see done, but it isn't really the way to go. The mask and sunglasses are a little over the top, don't you think?
My curiosity caused to watch the whole video to see your working style and quality, please DON'T, quit fixing this very sensitive hand tools, the way you are doing is totally wrong and misleading people, you took out spring wave and regular tiny washers out of the top of final bearing and forgot about them to reassemble, check your video again and see your mistakes.
