  • Why do laptop manufacturers all use different standard plugs?
Dell seem to be one of the worst.

My Dell laptop has eaten at least 4 of these power supplies. The problem _always_ being the bloody centre pin. Without that centre pin connected, the laptop will not charge. The cable will still supply power, but you are tethered to a power point. I got sick of shelling out $50 every time mine decided to stop charging and braved repairing them for the first time. I can't solder to save myself, but electrical tape hides all my sins and although my power supplies won't be winning any awards for appearance, they work and cost me nothing.
As stupid as this sounds, I've never thought of using blu tack to hold components while I solder. That's definitely going to save me trying to grow a third hand, thanks.

Yes I went through many expensive ideas for years till I realised a $3 pack of blutac would do better than all of them.

    Nice!
Btw the blue cable is the cc1 communication cable used for coms between charger and battery, not sure why they dontnjust use a bms on the battery! But hey. Anyways. I am going to write a piece soon on reddit on how to convert these things to usb C power and be done away with these cables. Even transferring the pin out coms to usb c

    Hi, nice fix.
I have a Dell with that 3 way power plug.
The problem with most any laptop plug is they come straight out of the laptop.
I had a works Toshiba and it had a right angle plug, much better and you cannot apply torque to the plug like a sideways hit to the straight plugs.
I have been trying to find a right angle adaptor for the DELL model I have, but can only find an adapter for the smaller gauged earlier DELL plug.

I usually cut the lead and fit either a right angle plug and socket of a different kind, in line with the existing socket, or strip some outer insulation off the lead, form a right angle and use heat shrink tubing to form a bend.

Thanks. Would have loved to see how you removed the black sheath off the plug.

The orange pair of flush cutters that you see earlier in the video.
I remove the sheath in a destructive fashion, but cutting at about 80 degrees to the axis of the plug slowly and gently, took me about 20 minutes.

had the same adventure last year helping friend. Managed to rig it to work for a few days before the ordered replacement came in. Now I have the same problem with my charger (it has 5 wires!!!) and damn it's the most annoying thing. Like it's designed to be broken...

Sounds like there might be dual voltages like 12, and 5v - or some BMS sensing going on.

I learned a lot from your techniques. Well done. But I don't understand what actually you fixed. At 15:13 you said all 3 wires are connected. Maybe they are just temporarily connected ie the connection is intermittent and the root cause not solved. At the end you said the laptop connection may be at fault. Did I miss something? Thanks!

A quick glance at the timecode you posted, insulation was broken, causing a short, and power supply to shut down on protection mode

I didn't understand the purpose of blue wire. Red is +ve, black is - ve, blue wire is for what? I have same dell 130 watts charger, the blue wire is completely cut and when I plug in my laptop shows warning 'please connect dell compatible charger'.

It depends on manufacturer. Some use it as an oem detection system, some as a sense/temp wire. Without documentation from them I can really only speculate. From my practical perspective, it won't charge without it, so I need to find a way to connect it.

It's a common problem unfortunately. Aftermarket chargers are not too difficult to find if repair is out of the question.
