    Great video with excellent advice. I like the fact you mentioned the technique for bird photography near a nest and talked about the welfare of the subject first. As a ranger who works in Cardiff it is a problem I encounter with photographers all the time who are too eager to just get the shot and not consider the subject. Thanks.

    Thanks Espen, I watched this and then went out and nailed a shot of a Dragonfly in flight. Couldn't have done it without the OM-1 and your guidance. Cheers

    Really helpful video, thanks a lot! I do have a question regarding Pro Capture. May I ask why you don't use Pro Capture all the time? Is there a disadvantage of having it on all the time, or maybe an advantage of not having it on all the time?
    Hope to hear from you!

      First of all you’d take a lot of images if you used it all the time and you’d fill up your card in no time. It would also need to stop to buffer every now and then which might mean that you miss a shot and drain your battery. It’s not really necessary unless there’s a behaviour that’s happening that’s very difficult to predict.

    common redstart pass by here (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia) on October and sometimes they stay for 2-3 weeks and if i am really lucky i could get another one for another 2-3 weeks, then in Spring late in April and May i could another 2 weeks visit. can't wait for one to arrive and see what i can do with it on the light of all the valuable info you gave here. this also can work with spotted flycatcher of if a friendly red backed shrike stopped by.

    Interesting video. I still shoot with my Pentax K3, some day I would love to try one of the new mirrorless cameras. They have a lot more capabilities than my old camera. Switching to a new system is not cheap though.

    I believe the the V designation on current SDXC cards is the important designation for photography. That is, V30 fast all round, V60 for high buffer cameras and 120 FPS video for slo mo and V90 which will guarantee you no speed problems up or down but certainly overkill in the current tech advancement level.

    Great video!
    However, I only use the large middle field for bird AF so that the camera focuses cleanly in the selected area when there are several birds or unfavorable coverage. The animal detection itself, including bird detection, still works across the entire screen - regardless of how large the AF field is set ;-)

    Hi Espen. I've been doing quite a bit of Pro Capture photography with my OM-1 Mark II and I am finding that with small, fast birds the Autofocus with Subject Detection can't keep up. I'm getting my best results by manually focusing on either the bird or its destination and hoping some shots fall in the area that's in focus. Are you finding that same thing with small, fast birds? Thanks.

    • @EspenHelland
      @EspenHelland  6 месяцев назад

      Mostly yes, though I’ve had times with some birds where the focus catches again. Experienced this a lot last year with grey wagtails hunting over the river.

    Do you recommend OM1 + 100-400 for a beginner wildlife and bird photographer?? And also is 20 MP enough considering you need to crop a lot sometimes in bird/wildlife???

    • @EspenHelland
      @EspenHelland  5 месяцев назад +1

      That’s a great combo, but I wouldn’t crop too much though. With the 400mm, equivalent to 800mm in full frame you can aim to make use of the entire frame.

    On the EM1 Mk2 I find Procapture H more useful than Procapture L because once that camera loses focus it never regains it anyway. I also find the 50 fps of Procapture H more useful than the 18 frames of Procapture L. I use C1 on the dial for Procapture, C2 for panning BIF, and C3 for perched birds.

    Why on earth would you not use Auto ISO (with Exposure Comp)? It will always choose the lowest ISO required for the shot.

    On your Super Control Panel, the exposure compensation appears to be set at -3. Please explain. Thank you.

      Probably to do with the fact that I was shooting backlit and I didn’t want to blow out the highlights of the wings.

    Hello Espen, I am thrilled that I found you on RUclips. I recently got myself an EM1 M2 and was looking to get upskilled to use the camera and to get into basic bird photography. I have had an em10 m2 before this. I am interested in buying your course but had one question. Would you suggest this course even though I am using an older EM1 model and not the latest OM system? Your response will be hugely appreciated and will help me in my photography journey. Thanks a lot :)

    • @EspenHelland
      @EspenHelland  Год назад +1

      Thanks, glad you’re enjoying the videos 🙂 yes, I think you would get a lot from it. I made the original course before the new OM-1 so everything in the videos is shown on my em1x and some on my old em1ii. They all have the same menu layout. I’ve added extra pdfs after the OM-1 was released to cover that camera a well.

    Great video! Pro Capture is fun to work with, I´ve used it a lot on my EM-1X. Just bought a OM-1 and I have to try it with C-AF now. Good info that the custom modes saves your settings now, I didn´t know that. The camera almost drove me nuts since on the EM1-X I used to "restart" my settings with the C1 :)

    Thanks for another great video Espen, the way you set up is really useful . I do wonder though if my om1 needs a warranty check as I struggle to get Sh2 to get anything in focus using pro capture? Your pictures show what should be possible. Thanks

    • @EspenHelland
      @EspenHelland  Год назад

      I used it yesterday on a grey wagtail hunting, and it didn’t get the whole sequence sharp, they’re so fast! But the focus caught up with it and I got some keepers. It’s worth trying again and again, it happens so fast.

    Does pro capture work if you are using a remote shutter release? Thanks a lot Espen. Your videos are so enjoyable. I learn something every time.

    • @EspenHelland

      Thanks! Yes, I’ve used the app on my phone, but you have to change the settings so you can half press shutter button. Might do a video on that soon 🙂

    Did you find the Sony card V90 clears the buffer faster than the SanDisk V90 on the OM-1? Thanks.

    • @tdunster2011
      @tdunster2011 Год назад

      Sony don't make memory cards. They source them from suppliers such as Sandisk and Lexar - and then rebadge them as Sony.

    • @EspenHelland
      @EspenHelland  Год назад +1

      It should as it has a faster writing speed, but I haven’t tested them side by side

    I forgot to mention in my previous comment that I'm using the 150-400 lens and Pro Capture SH2 with all focus points. I've tried CF Sensitivity on plus and minus 1. Today I tried setting a Focus Limiter to a small range that included the feeder the birds were coming to, but no luck.

    Backlit?.... no thanks , I pay good money for camera and lens so I want details and not blownout highlights ..... tri-pod? no thaniksOM-1 and 150-400 f/4.5 is among the best stab on the market right now so use it ..... sit in a hide? no thanks if my judgement for getting to close is bad, I don't want to trick the birds..... let them get accustomed to me over 10 - 15 mins without spooking my subject ..... Pro Cap SH2 @ 25 fps 15 pre and 10 post for total of 25, cross point pattern for focus zone C-AF+M situated on the entry to the landing zone/departure point ... mode change from static to BIF is depth of field preview button re mapped for C2 lower button right hand ring finger......shoot hand held in case more action occurs away from tripod field of view ....no sudden moves or sharp noises ..... best time I've noticed is when the parents are trying to entice the young to fly for the first time...... on Vancouver Island this becomes an easy task in the Spring

      Don’t really care about what you do. I want to see what Espen does. You disagree with what he does, you can just move on to another person whose style is closer to yours.
