I'd argue a lot of these aren't fourth wall breaks. Just because they look directly at the camera doesn't mean they look at US. For example, the character introductions in Shadow the Hedgehog. The camera angle in these is clearly what Shadow sees. So it's more like a first person camera angle than a 4th wall break. I don't think anyone would argue that when someone looks at you in a first person shooter they are breaking the 4th wall...
A shooter would be different because a shooter is online people while this is coded in, in a shooter it’s the point of the game. but in this it would be breaking the fourth wall because they are talking to or symboling something to the player.
Agreed. A big example is in Sonic Heroes he shows Rouge wink at the camera. I don't know if that was just to make it easier to see, but if the way it was framed is a requirement, now you have Shadow staring at her for a prolonged period of time. Another few I had a problem with was using terms that people, or gamers at the very least, put into their mannerisms. As they're from a video game, it becomes more of a pun as opposed to breaking the fourth wall.
