“23 books I read in March.” I remember reading 23 books in 2019 and being pretty impressed with myself 😅
I have finished 23 books year-to-date. I had only read 7 by this point in 2022. Every year is different.

23 in a year is amazing! I’ve learned to stop comparing myself to people in the book community. It can be discouraging how some read so many but people have different reading paces and are busier in their lives. I read 4-6 books a month and for me that’s amazing, even if I have time to read more I’m just a super slow reader. I like to enjoy my time and read slowly so I can absorb what I consume. Be proud of every single book you read ❤🥰
my favorite thing about several people are typing is how clear every single character is despite it being completely told in slack messages. it blew my mind how the author built these character personalities based on how they type, but its so true. your boss communicates in a completely different way than your work bestie would, the slacker in the office versus the overeager coworker, etc. I've read it 2 or 3 times now and it makes me laugh and smile every time!
Several People Are Typing is an _amazing_ audiobook. Full voice cast and the actors are giving the absolute most (the way one of the female voice actors relays the message "!!!!!" absolutely sends me) 😂

@@BRhymesss I hope you enjoy it! It is definitely Weird (with a capital "W") but I had such a fun time with the surrealness and Slack humor.
I also read Several People Are Typing in March and gave it a 4.5! Thought it was an incredibly clever, hilarious read. I can’t imagine how difficult it is to tell a compelling sature entirely through Slack messages, but the author did an excellent job.
Our Share of Night is specifically Latine Horror with magical realism! English horror is a different type of category and SMG has a great article on why it’s that way!
okay hear me out: based on your thoughts on How to Live Safely, I think you'd really enjoy the novella A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers! Sci fi/futuristic story about a monk who is grappling with, essentially, the meaning of life and what their calling is, so there's lots of reflection and philosophical discussion and also they have a really charming robot friend. It was my favorite book from last year and based on everything you're saying it seems like it might hit for you!
Always enjoy the wrap ups but I feel like you were particularly eloquent and well spoken in this one. Something about the descriptions and reasoning behind all of the books felt very well put.

I'm so glad you are enjoying the Veronica Speedwell Mysteries! I am a few behind in the series, but I really enjoy it. And I couldn't agree more about the chemistry between Stoker and Veronica. So. Good.
I am curious though why you'd classify it as a cozy? Maybe as you get deeper into the series and the chemistry becomes more intense, you'll feel differently about it. Nothing against cozy mysteries - I've read more than my fair share (though I'm also super picky about them). I just wouldn't classify this series as such. The author and publisher classify them as historical mysteries or historical fiction (this doesn't seem a good fit either, but...).
I've been binge-watching your videos. Definitely my favorite Booktube channel hands-down. No idea how I didn't find you sooner, but we have similar tastes. I LOVE a weird book, especially weird horror. If you haven't read it, I highly recommend Break the Bodies, Haunt the Bones by Micah Dean Hicks. It's rated low. I hate the cover. And if it hadn't been sent to me as an ARC, I never would have picked it up. And that would have been sad. So. So. Good.
I have been a mystery reader since the 90’s. My favourite mystery series is Mistress of the Art of Death by Ariana Franklin. It is set in Medieval England where the king sends to his cousin, the king of Sicily, for the best Master of the Art Death to investigate an important crime, and instead gets a Mistress. Dark and witty.
My favourite cozy mystery series are:
- The Dame Frevisse series by Margaret Frazer. This is also medieval, and is like Cadfael, but with a nun.
- The Library Lover’s Mystery series by Jenn McKinlay. A woman comes to a small New England town to start a new life as the town librarian, and encounters a wonderful cast of locals, a handsome boat captain, and some mysteries to solve. My favourite thing is “Crafternoon”, where the group gets together to eat, do their current crafts together, and catch up in the back room of the library.
There are so many good mysteries that are not thrillers!
As someone who works in PR and has had the exact convos that these people have had (minus being absorbed into slack), I gave “several people are typing” 5 stars

Veronica and Stoker are 100% my favorite couple of all time! I've also only completed a few buzzwords so far. Some are trickier than I thought they would be!
You've convinced me to pick up We Ride Upon Sticks! I've been seeing this cover so often since it came out and have been curious about it. Sounds like just my type of book!
I also read Several People Are Typing in March and thought it was so wacky and funny! I keep describing it as a Black Mirror episode but comedy instead of horror.

I absolutely loved several people are typing - I read it all in one reading session. I think what I love it is a. I use slack for work all the time 😂 b. The characters are really well written and the plot is delightfully weird even just through slack messages.
One of my favourite cozy mysteries is a murder most unladylike. It's a series now but they're all standalones and in my opinion the first book has by far the best mystery.
We Ride Upon Sticks sounds so weird and delightful and right up my alley! Will definitely check it out! ❤

Your talking about the chemistry in the Veronica Speedwell series is making me want to continue onto book 2...and I read book 1 a long time ago!
I am definitely planning to read Dear Senthuran this year, I've been working my way through their backlist and that one is next on my list. I don't typically love memoirs but it sounds like this will be the one for me.
Since you liked Binti so much, I'd recommend Remote Control by Nnedi Okorafor. I absolutely loved it. It's tiny too btw.

My only issues with series over 3 books is that they are difficult to get my hands on! I'm addicted to the kate burkholder series by Linda Castillo and I've bought the 11th and 13th, but trying to find the others is dang near impossible because so many other series are coming in and being put on the shelves.
PLUS why do books not put the number on them? If it is a number order series tell me! If they can be read as stand alones tell me that too lol

I'd say I recommend Several People Are Typing to any remote worker - it kind of feels like a modern take on Office Space. The office/corporate culture satire was so hilarious for me.

I love Several People are Typing, 'stupid' is the perfect word to describe it!
The problem I had with Dead Dead Girls. It didn't really give a historical feeling of the world or period, it was so choppy with the writing and pacing, had trouble with how the queer characters were handled, and I had figured out who the killer was by the end of chapter three. It did have promise and was a debut story, I just wish it had gone through a few more edits before being published.
The Girl Next Door was based on a true story that I read articles about. After I read the articles there was no way I could read the book and immediately took it off my TBR list.
I love the Veronica Speedwell series. The sexual tension/chemistry is so well done and the banter between the two is so funny. And the mysteries are always interesting. I'm an outlier when it comes to the Finlay Donovan series. I did not like the first one and won't continue with the rest. It was like nails on a chalkboard for me. LOL!

Have you ever read anything by JT Ellison? I just read her newest release, It’s One of Us. It was excellent
I think Finlay and Dial A for Aunties read more like a "cozy thriller" rather than mystery which I appreciate as a new subgenre!
If you haven't read The Death of Jane Lawrence, I recommend it! It has fake marriage and magic!

I found the Equisite Corpse to be boring. as someone who watches a lot of crime shows maybe I've fried my brain to it but it didn't turn my stomach even once and I didn't like that it switched from 1st to 3rd person and some of the chapters were to long and boring. and the characters were a.bit flat.
