@@edmis90 okay, but if you try, you can soak in a lot of ideas that would work in classical too. It's still chess, after all. Moreover, the stalling idea could be useful in classical too, right. People were being sort of mean at first, but at 6:25 and 6:50, it was cool to see a bunch of people in the chat telling Kobalt that it was OK and that he played really well.
Any insight on why he chose to take with the rook vs the knight or bishop? I find myself in that situation and spend so much time on which attack would be best.
oh well the queen is defending that pawn anyways. Not sure if he wanted extra defense or just thought the file would open up and the rook would be useful on it. Probably the latter. You must embrace the trolls. "Who's a better kisser you or Hikaru?" You can respond with calling Hikaru and putting the troll on the spot. It'll grab mainstream attention and keep the mood light. The internet can't be cleansed, just roll with it.
It's true some beginners, maybe a minority but they're there, start out extremely defensive. Start playing with no particular idea what you're doing, lose to early attacks, decide you'd like to build a pillow fort to repel all invaders. This was the case for me. The first opening I learned was the hippo for that reason. It wasn't until later that I realized I would do a lot better by countering aggression with slightly better calculated aggression, mainly because other beginners tend to learn attacking stuff first with no care taken for defense at all. That is the online beginner standard of queen out, bishop out, make a scene and cross your fingers it works. So instead of my impenetrable fort idea, if I applied some offense my opponents would fall apart. That was true from 400 up to about 1000. Around 1000 people stopped doing unforced errors (as much) and I had to study more.
Still remember i played a kings indian against my friend who just pushed 5 pawns into the center and just won me. I took the 'setup opening' too literally i guess...
