Interesting comparison for sure! But I'm not strapping an iphone to my helmet, or plunging it into the ocean. I think if you are going to pick an iphone ove a GoPro, then you didn't really need an action camera in the first place.
Neither the iphone, nor any other mobile, the go pro is a video camera and photos for extreme cases, the iphone is a phone with a camera, let's not forget that it is a phone. Go pro : Action camara and iPhone : a phone with cámara
I've just shoot plenty of vids and pics in the ocean with iphone 12 pro without any case and the phone is fine - I also have apple care plus just in case
The go pro wins in areas that you will only use a GoPro for (rough fast movements) the iPhone wins in areas where you only use iPhone for (very low light - no one uses their GoPro at night).
Hi I was wondering if you could explain this a little more since I’m new to this. So for taking photos and videos at night, would a Go Pro be better than iPhone XS Max do you think? Or is the iPhone still better in this case?
Have both (12 Pro Max). The GoPro is for when it’s too risky/impractical/niche to use an iPhone. The iPhone is for everything else. Just take both with you since they can fit in your pockets. The best cam is the one that’s always with you.
@@yaaalouu2693 I also have 13 and i really love the quality of video, but it does digitally sharpene the video automatically so it looks a bit unnatural when shooting something that is far away, still it is better than 12 in my opinion
I guess having both options are better. Iphone 13's features are awesome enough to do daily vlogging as it has the stability, sharpness and quality needed. But if it calls for some action like watersports, bunjee jumping and tracking, it's best to have an action camera on the side as it more handy and is built for these kinds of activities. You wouldn't want to have your $1000 iPhone 13 attached on your head while bunjee jumping, would you??
Personally I went for the GoPro, main reason is my kids. I can hand them that and all they have to do is press one button it comes to life and records immediately. The stabilizer is the best thing for shaky kid videos. Insta360 would be nice but battery life and internal memory was not enough for all the videos they make. Also it's big enough not to get lost in the couch 😅.
One thing you didn't test: how does the iPhone preform in the rain and/or under water? The HERO 10 has a hydrophobic coating in the lens cover that seems to work well in the rain. Just a thought.
Since pretty much everyone has a smartphone, the GoPro is a really addition for more versatility and footage variety. If you like doing videos, get a GoPro
5:00 GoPro pictures records bending vertical window and curtain while iPhone pictures records none bending vertical window and curtain. I prefer the iPhone over the GoPro for recording videos.
I bought my first action camera two weeks ago and it is Go 2. I’m happy with it. Much easier to start shooting than with my iPhone. Also I am satisfied with quality, their app and opportunity to correct video after shooting.
At the end of the day I'd still use the GoPro even if it didn't have the best video. Utilizing a phone like this is just bulky on the front of my bike. I've also used my GoPro in the water. Last time I tried that with my phone it went bananas like you were pressing the buttons.
Hi there, i was wondering if you could integrate a colorchecker card into your comparison videos because it's difficult to tell which product is rendering colors closer to the real thing. thanks . 👍
In answer to your question (with another question), do we really "need" any of this stuff? I think you need a phone more than you need a GoPro in today's modern electronic era. Basically, we might compare the size and shape of the two devices. A phone is flat, but it takes up a lot more space in the other two dimensions. A GoPro, on the other hand, can slip into a small camera case and be very portable. I think you can bang up a GoPro more and come out all right, yet as you mentioned, today's modern smartphone cases are somewhat protective. A GoPro won't actually focus. Smartphones aren't all that great either, though. Really, a small, compact, portable camera that has a focusing lens is probably better than either a GoPro or a smartphone for some purposes. Personally, I like GoPros more than smartphones. Also, you don't always really need to zoom in on something. You can often get yourself closer instead. I wish that GoPros would have optical zoom lenses, but I think such lenses with their required moving parts would make the cameras more fragile. I could go on and on. Essentially, to me, smartphones get a "zero" in the bigger-picture comparison. GoPro cameras are fun.
Can you let us know your top 3 action cameras right now and why? I'm looking at the HERO10 but the overheating and slightly less battery life keep me cautious. The insta360 go 2 looks awesome but the battery life there isn't amazing and I'm scared if I get it now the next iteration would probably come out a month later, and after looking at your video I'm intereated to see what the DJI osmo action 2 is like when it's confirmed!
Do you strap your iphone to a helmet and go on a motorcycle? On a Airsoft Battlefield? On a skydive? On a scuba diving? The action camera name says all. If you can film your content with an iPhone you don't need a action camera
Thanks! But one question: Did you really set the Gopro to "Wind" or "Auto" when doing the audio test? Have done some mtb runs with GP10 in pretty much wind and that was notnear that high levels of wind noise. If having it in stereomode I use windslayers.
I’m also in the camp of finding a 360 deg action cam way more useful than a traditional Go-Pro Hero. I exclusively use my GoPro Max for wing foiling and kite foiling (see my avatar). That is definitely not an environment you want to put an IPhone in. Plus you need serious image stabilization so it’s really what the GoPro was designed for. On the other hand he IPhone is always in my pocket ready to take snap shots or video during everyday life. I’m really tempted to go for the 13Pro Max since still living with my 8 Plus
Ben, a quick tip. Shoot using the time-lapse feature on the iPhone 13 when you want to do hyperlapses to get the best results and far better and smoother stabilization, cheers :)
I think they could work as complements of each other 🙌🏽 they are both really good quality but for different moments 📸 they are like the perfect duo for an easy filming equipment 🤟🏽
I’m guessing you used the stock iPhone app. I find the stabilization using FilmicPro a lot better. I guess the average person is going to have a phone anyway so it mores question of do you also need the GoPro. If you’re really doing action stuff I’d say yes, just for the durability.
Excellent video yet again. And while there was no question in my mind the iPhone would be better, when I ride my Can-Am X3 RC through the woods, I’m slapping my GoPro to the roof, definitely not my iPhone.

GoPro needs a larger sensor. This 1/23" sensor is super outdated for 2021. iPhone is the best option for most users, dynamic range, colors, stabilization (GoPro is only better when is really bright), low light, HDR, ProREs, etc... are better. Well, let's wait for DJI Action 2. Let's see if DJI will surprise us again.
ok sure, but think about what gopros are made for. i wanna see some durability testing and comparison between the two and then you will see a broken iphone after the first test and the gopro wont even have a scratch. OH and by the way gopro has way better stabilization. he even says that in the video.
Your videos have been getting so good man! I do want to add, the gripe I have with the Iphone is the screen starts to dim as it gets hot when using the camera a lot. I hate this, and wish there was a fix
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, if Apple make an action camera at the same price point as the competitors they will dominate the whole market.
Great testing, both these new cameras do a great job. And I do tend to prefer the iPhone 13 Pro for all around photos and video quality. But remember why the GoPro was first invented, because it's much more rugged than other cameras. That it still the GoPro's biggest advantage. Thanks for sharing Ben.
In my opinion, the situation looks like this, the iPhone is a better tool for Vlogging, because it gives a more portrait image and colors, gives the possibility of express editing and adding material on social media or live in very high resolutions, but also the size is totally unsuitable for sports. Gopro, on the other hand, is an ideal tool for very difficult conditions, where the material is recorded first and then it is worked on. Gopro is also not a good tool for typical boring vlogging and a story about just about anything in the middle of the city (not to be confused with vlogging athletes such as runners, climbing, water sports)
IMHO the problem with GoPro is their video quality, dynamic range, sound, battery life, operating stability... Not even original GoPro accessories work and are readily available. Ask the vloggers what it's like to plug in an external mic. As a GoPro user I couldn't stress enough that one after another they're all the same warmed up soup year after year with no substantial improvement.

Awesome vids man. 20 minutes ago you had me sold on the 10 in the GoPro version comparisons. I'm trying to work out how to get the best stills whilst out riding dirtbikes though and it really seems like the iphone gives it a good belting in this area. The issue I have is that you can't remote activate/control the iphone like you can a go pro or a rooted android phone with custom button mapping etc. The go pro also has better mounting options and awesome vid stabilisation. But I feel at the end of the day stills is what people consume the most in this scroll world. Tough one!
Good video thanks Ben. Can you confirm the brand for the multi-cam mounting plate? I need to mount 2 GoPro 10s with Lumecube lights and the adjustable sliding plate looks ideal. Thanks
iPhone a beast. BUT I would never want to use my phone as my primary shooter. Price comparison isn’t really fair. The GoPro can’t browse the web, text or call anybody. Obviously more functionally being a 📱 .
Really amazing job. I would say if you want to shoot action videos or action photos gopro 10 is the best. But if you are not a action guy, iPhone 13 pro is a good choice.
Love your videos n inputs however i still think comparison between action & smartphone cameras doesn't seem appropriate since they both belong to different world's n does different things.
exactly, i mean if you are just going to use the camera for taking pictures and stuff then its kinda relevant but almost everyone who has or wants a gopro wants it because all of its other qualities as well. they want to use it as an actioncamera not just taking pictures. if they did some tests in action and some durability tests and see wich one will last longer Everyone will see why gopros are made and what they are made for. And why iphone and gopro isn't a relevant comparison.
Good review and thank you. I did unofficial similar comparison while on Magneto longboard (skateboard) using 13 max pro and GP 10 going downhill 0.8 miles (1.29km). I like 13 max pro for all the things you mentioned in addition to I use it for all my editing - i stopped using computer editing. I’ll always favor GP for shear durability and water resistance - I had fun in the rain with GP. I have 4 GPs (8,9,10, Fusion). Every device has pros/cons, but in the end it’s got to meet your personal use function. For me whether I choose to rock climb, boogie board or longboard - my go to camera is GP, hence I have 4 of them ha ha ha.
great post. so im thinking of getting the iphone for videos instead of the go pro, which video editing app do you use? with a good attachement and case would the quality of the video still be great for action sports like biking ?
@@jl9365 thanks, JL. I use the Videoleap app because it’s simple and can be used any time on the phone. Plus, it has a lot of resource You Tube videos to reinforce its best use-I’m still learning so much and not truly using to its potential. The only issue with an iPhone would be stability of the video as it may excessively “image bounce”, but I think it would work fine. I only use the GoPros more for durability, use in water/rain, but also cheaper to replace if I break it. Good luck and hope the biking vids are fun to make and edit. 👍
Yes, we will always need action camera, untill Apple makes a phone which has removable battery, memory card slot, and which doesn't cost $1300, which is mountable on different locations be it your bike, helmet or side of the car, can be dipped in the ocean without thinking about salty water and is about the size of action camera.
amazing, the difference between iphone 13 pro and gopro 10, i find iphone to have better picture and sound, however i still prefer gopro 10 because it's neater, it's easy to have a good video, thank you thank you so much ❤️🔔👍👍
Great, really an amazing video, where a Smartphone can compete with an action camera ... it's amazing. Although I wouldn't put an iPhone 13 Pro Max in the sea, but I admit that the image quality and stabilization in some cases exceeds the image quality of the GoPro Hero 10 Black, except in slow motion where it is take the top. Astonishing and interesting comparison ... even if the iPhone costs 2 to 3 times the price of the GoPro anyway, it must be emphasized.
Whats pretty interesting is even something old like a galaxy s7 is around equal to a gp7/8 black EXCEPT for stabilisation, yet you can pick one up with a cracked screen for $30...and not that much more for one not cracked. I used to use them on my drones.
I wanted to get a go pro 10 for my channel due to its compact size. Lately I prefer to record on my iPhone over dslr due to convenience. However seeing so many of your comparisons it seems like iPhone is better than go pro for my needs at least unless I need mounted videos or stability
You should do a comparison of real video cameras vs these two toys. And explain how we control depth-of-field, wide-angle distortion (yuk!), shutter speed and f-stop controls, how we get hyperfocal distance focus, and all the other creative tools in a video camera. Wondering how they would stack up against Sony or Black Magic Design cameras, or even Nikon.
Awesome video!!! This is exactly why I’m avoiding the GoPro 10 since I’d rather spend the money to upgrade to a newer iPhone 13 Pro from my X. That macro is very enticing because GoPro cannot do macro. I’m looking forward to the DJI Action 2 because the Osmo Action is way more reliable than the GoPro 6/7/8/9/10. LOL!!! I’m done with that battery pull life to reset the GoPro. It’s so annoying to unrig my GoPro vlogging setup to pull the battery.
@@null-factor , but here’s the thing. I don’t go under water 98% of my life. Get the camera that fits your needs most of the time. And, an iPhone 13 Pro will do the for me paired with my Osmo Action with random freezing like GoPro.
if you want iphone over gopro then you weren't really in the need for an actioncam in the first place. because they are made for so different things. Would you put your $1000 iphone on your helmet while skiing or riding a bike in the woods. You fall one time and the phone is wrecked were is the gopro is completaly fine. this comparison isnt relevant. if you need/ want an actioncam, gopro is better, if you don't iphone iS better. its not wierd because THEY ARE MADE FOR DIFFERENT THINGS.

Tough one!
I fully agree
A giant camera for documenting beautiful moments.. really worth the acquisition
شكراً لك فيديو رائع 👍
Very Informative, Thanks for Sharing ,
Good video thanks Ben. Can you confirm the brand for the multi-cam mounting plate? I need to mount 2 GoPro 10s with Lumecube lights and the adjustable sliding plate looks ideal. Thanks
Thank you very much ☺️💖
No one can tell better than you, liked this video a lot
iPhone a beast. BUT I would never want to use my phone as my primary shooter. Price comparison isn’t really fair. The GoPro can’t browse the web, text or call anybody. Obviously more functionally being a 📱 .
Thank you. Hello from Kazakhstan.
Really amazing job. I would say if you want to shoot action videos or action photos gopro 10 is the best. But if you are not a action guy, iPhone 13 pro is a good choice.
For a general user iPhone is a better proposition. Actually I was just wondering about the same comparison. You helped me clear my doubt.
That's a cool phone holder.
If I had to pick, I will go for iPhone because I'm getting more features apart from the camera itself lol
And price difference that's almost double
@@Inder473 but it’s way more than just a camera.
Nice mount you are using comparing the two.
Thanks for watching and showing love.
Congratulations 🎁🎉you won a prize !!! Send me a text above 🖕to acknowledge your prize .
great post. so im thinking of getting the iphone for videos instead of the go pro, which video editing app do you use? with a good attachement and case would the quality of the video still be great for action sports like biking ?
@@jl9365 thanks, JL. I use the Videoleap app because it’s simple and can be used any time on the phone. Plus, it has a lot of resource You Tube videos to reinforce its best use-I’m still learning so much and not truly using to its potential. The only issue with an iPhone would be stability of the video as it may excessively “image bounce”, but I think it would work fine. I only use the GoPros more for durability, use in water/rain, but also cheaper to replace if I break it. Good luck and hope the biking vids are fun to make and edit. 👍
Needed this video
Yes, we will always need action camera, untill Apple makes a phone which has removable battery, memory card slot, and which doesn't cost $1300, which is mountable on different locations be it your bike, helmet or side of the car, can be dipped in the ocean without thinking about salty water and is about the size of action camera.
Great video! Question: the lens is wider on the iphone 13 than the GP 10??
amazing, the difference between iphone 13 pro and gopro 10, i find iphone to have better picture and sound, however i still prefer gopro 10 because it's neater, it's easy to have a good video, thank you thank you so much ❤️🔔👍👍
*hello, nice to meet you!*
Just discovered your videos Ben. Great stuff. Very thorough. New Sub and like.
Спасибо большое, эх ещё бы на русском
Учи английский, тут не сложно понять что он говорит
Phone cameras got so much better the last 3-4. I rarely use my GoPros and my dslr. I only use those in special occasions.
I wouldn't say the Phone is competing.Especially at $1,000. The Go Pro is way better, considering the price.
Can you suggest me about gopro setting for my activity in nature using tripod? Like solo camping
I wanted to get a go pro 10 for my channel due to its compact size. Lately I prefer to record on my iPhone over dslr due to convenience. However seeing so many of your comparisons it seems like iPhone is better than go pro for my needs at least unless I need mounted videos or stability
yeah iphone works for vlogging but gopro is better for everything else
Hello, what the model of your electro scooter?😊👍🏻
So amazing 👏👏❤
I use GoPro 9 and 10 to record. And I produce movies on S21 Ultra. Movies in 4K60 longer then one hour 😋
When it comes to mobile video recording, Iphone is still the best.
The macro is game changing
@@null-factor , but here’s the thing. I don’t go under water 98% of my life. Get the camera that fits your needs most of the time. And, an iPhone 13 Pro will do the for me paired with my Osmo Action with random freezing like GoPro.
@@teachingrounds I agree. I actually got a great photo of a caterpillar's FACE with the 13 pro macro!
if you want iphone over gopro then you weren't really in the need for an actioncam in the first place. because they are made for so different things.
