Not at all blaming the victim, but for personal safety this is exactly why you must have a space cushion between self and other vehicles. When you're that close to another vehicle you have no time at all to react to anything. They could be drunk and swerve into you. They could have seen a hazard in their lane at the last minute and made a panic move to avoid it. Could lose control of the vehicle for any number of reason. This may still not have been avoidable no matter what, but it's also possible that there may have been more time to slow down and/or change lanes had there been more distance between the vehicles but the Kia Soul was passing quickly on the left of the truck (GMC Sierra?) and that wheel detached literally last minute as the Kia was about neck and neck.

I work on these trucks a lot and constantly warn people about inappropriate modifications. What rim dealers don't tell them is. Stock axle and bearings aren't designed for the dangerous weight or angle stress they add. They can void warranties and seriously reduce brake performance. Also lower the load capacity a lot. They serve no practical purpose. So i don't see them as an upgrade either.
The idiot who owned my truck before me, apparently installed a mediocre lift kit. Unfortunately, the money currently isn't there to remove the lift and install stock tires. Paranoid lately of this scenario becoming a reality.
Most people don’t realize how expensive it is to lift a truck with quality components that won’t cause a mess like this. A proper lift kit will allow for these negative offset wheels while correcting the geometry to cause as little additional stress on steering, suspension, and wheel hub components as possible. However, most people unfortunately cheap out. Luckily, the majority of failures tend to not be this catastrophic.
If you look carefully at the rim in the closing shots, the mounting face is very shiny and large. It looks like the entire brake rotor is still attached. This suggests a suspension failure, or as others have pointed out, a failed spacer.
@J thats a joke right do you realize how much crime actually gets committed on those 2 modes of transportation. Granted alot mostly happens in big cities but they aren't as safe as a personal vehicle
@J Comment doesn't really apply to recent events, atleast with all of the train derailments that have been occurring. Also considering all of the chemicals some of those trains carry, it's hard to say trains are safer.
Truck had extreme modified offset wheels which puts a heavy load on the spindle and axle bearing. The lost wheel assembly still had the rotor and spindle bearing attached. These modifications are extremely dangerous causing severe changes in steering geometry and stress loads on bearing parts.
I can’t believe I had to scroll so far to find this, the driver is responsible because there’s no way these were DOT legal modifications, and obviously they were shoddily done.
The fact that this comment was buried so deep is really sad. Truck driver is 1000% at fault for this. Just looking at the video, you can tell this truck has been modified, and I’m willing to bet it was done in his driveway, instead of by a professional.
Some people just don’t know how to modify their cars. Those spacers are irresponsible. What’s worse, it looked stupid before the wheel flew off, much more so after.
Not no reason. The driver of the truck was operating it negligently. Full well knowing there was a problem with the tire. Whether it was not properly secured lug nuts or a broken a hub bearing, the driver knew. But they made the conscious decision to drive anyways.
It happened to a relative, a wheel came off, although fortunately nothing serious happened. There is no way of knowing that you will run out of wheels, it's funny how they blame the truck driver.

I work in automotive. I was wondering if the initial impact and launch would be enough frontal deceleration to trigger the airbags. Or did the accelerometers feed crazy enough data to the airbag controller that it channeled a Star Trek moment and electronically screamed "fire everything!"... The side curtain bags were already deployed when it hit the ground upside down.. I have to assume the driver's frontal and leg bags were too.

@@DuckiestBoat959 based on what you just said, I'm gonna go ahead and assume the IIHS data isn't fully reported because their test results are supposed to be published yet they're making their employees sign NDAs. My guess is they get paid by the car companies to keep the REALLY bad results quiet.
Especially when you’re driving next to a moron with modified wheels of a size that don’t belong on that truck. There’s a reason they’re ignoring this fact because only a certain group of people do this.

@@djaysyn777 Yeah, shame on the driver for not being able to glimpse into the future and avoid the completely avoidable accident with his psychic ability.
just looking at how high the suspension is raised on that truck clearly indicates some sort of modification. But It is impressive how the kia flew up that high... even more so the driver surviving without serious injuries. vehicular safety has progressed a lot
The truck also had spacers to make the wheels stick out further to the sides. That puts more stress on components and the components themselves are probably aftermarket and may not be high quality or correctly installed.
@Antonio-Gransci Agreed. Unnecessary modifications that turn a vehicle into a more deadly hazard for everyone else on the road should make the owner criminally liable. Spacers that make wheels stick outside the wheel wells even when straight and lift kits that cause your bumpers to be higher than everyone else's probably shouldn't be street-legal.
@@Sashazurno spacers on that truck, the wheels had a positive offset that put the wheels further out. You can tell by how “deep” the face of the wheel is. Wheels like this do add extra wear on the bearings, but it doesn’t appear that the hub came off, just the wheel.
Lol, that truck is not raised. The roof is only slightly higher than the Kia, definitely stock height. The aftermarket wheels are taller than factory, but only raise the truck by a couple inches if that.
You can see the brake disc still attached to the wheel which means it was a wheel bearing failure. The bearing failed most likely because of the excessive unsprung weight and offset of the aftermarket wheels and tires. This means that every time it goes over a bump the bearing experiences a twisting force rather than one lined up with it.
im not entirely sure but i think i could be a wheel spacer, which is a useless thing that attaches to the bearing but only to push the wheels out for aesthetics.
Brake disc is still attached, but the extra weight likely didn't cause the bearing failure. The axle nut needs torqued to a specific spec otherwise the bearing will fail. My guess is that Jim Bob, Joe Bob, Billy Bob, and Bob Bob didn't torque it properly when installing the lift kit.
In Germany, we have something called Tüv, but it's a major inspection that is done by different organizations. In America, you should have this too. Every 2 years you have to take your vehicle to a Tüv station where an engineer inspects the vehicle for safety and exhaust emissions. This costs around 100 euros and after passing the test you get a new sticker on your license plate. Okay, a rim that doesn't belong on the truck has fallen off. However, the brake disk was still on the rim. So I conclude that there was something wrong with the suspension. Such damage is noticeable and can also be heard and felt when driving, long before it ever comes to such a drama. The Truck would not have never ever passed a TÜV inspection in Germany.
I don;t think recovering from this accident will be hard for either party - no one was seriously injured, and no law penalties will happen to anyone (most probably). So actually they will be happy with the outcome (they survived), and will retell the story as a heroic deed. I am quite sure both of them will be ok - with even possibility they will become friends - as it clearly was an accident, with no evil intent

This brings back a terrifying memory of my own. I was driving on a major freeway, about six car lengths behind a car towing a boat on a trailer. I saw a wheel came off their trailer and come flying my direction, bouncing from one side of the lane to another. The trailer frame hit the road and began throwing sparks and a cloud of metal debris. I did my best to dodge it all, although it was impossible to know where any of the bouncing material would land. To my amazement, I escaped without injury or damage to my car.
In the car with my missus driving, there was a flat bed in front of us. I don't know how but I knew something bad was about to happen. Told her to change lanes and as she did the tire blew on the truck. Outer tire rolled of down the road. A gas bottle on the back of the truck flew of the back and bounced like a basket ball 4 or 5 times in our direction. We passed it safely. It was still bouncing, so I hopefully no one else hit it after we carried on. We overtook the truck but it seemed like he was carrying on with basically a wheel missing. Dangerous place to be the road. Vigilance is required by everyone. Unfortunately it's not always the case.

just looking at how high the suspension is raised on that truck clearly indicates some sort of modification.

Yeah, looks like a shitbox job on the truck mods nearly killed another driver... yet that somehow isn't being pressed?
you nailed it....should be at the top of the comments
im not entirely sure but i think i could be a wheel spacer, which is a useless thing that attaches to the bearing but only to push the wheels out for aesthetics.
As a car mechanic, I agree with that reasoning
I hope the driver can recover emotionally. That had to have been terrifying. Amazing no one was seriously hurt.
I'm seeking revenge
I don;t think recovering from this accident will be hard for either party - no one was seriously injured, and no law penalties will happen to anyone (most probably). "just call a cab, Ill pay ... for half"
Exactly 😂
I fell riding lime scooter to work hit my head, concussion, ambulance to ER, 7 staples in my head, AND MY BOSS STILL WANTED ME TO COME IN AFTER I WAS DISCHARGED SAME DAY.
Glad everyone involved is ok. I’ve never seen anything like that before, talk about one-in-a-million odds. That tire had to come off at just the right time & the Kia had to be in just the right place to make that happen. Absolutely crazy.
It's a message from the universe. Don't drive kias.
And there was someone with a dash cam right behind them too. Crazy
And the tesla had to be there to record it. NUTS!
They finna be hella paid!
…plus…the tire came back and hit the car again…like it was on a demonic string or program…thanking the Lord that everyone walked away with minor injuries and ALIVE…!❤
Good job Kia safety engineers! Really impressive to walk away from that kind of violent roll-over wreck!
KIAs are like tanks. Even in car chases the cops couldn't stop them.
Always wear seatbelts.
WTF that's horrible engineering how can a wheel get underneath their vehicle and flip it over that's so stupid why would you commend the engineering when a wheel can launch their vehicle that high in the air
@@gradyjackson8517 What do you expect to happen when a tire rolls in front of a moving car? You think engineers can overcome the laws of physics lol.
@@gradyjackson8517 highschool dropout?
I have horrible, morbid, anxious thoughts about this exact situation when I'm on the road sometimes. Freaks me the hell out, thank god this woman was ok.
I got so scared while reading this. Glad youre ok
Your intuition saved you both a lot of trouble. 👌
@@THEDOORIZCLOSED Thank you. It was an experience I'll never forget.
I can see it all now 😧
That’s terrifying! I’m glad everyone is ok.
I'm glad the car okay
