Thank you for the great explanation! I heard a few times about Zwift Power, but didn't know for what it's being used. Now it's all clear and I've even registered already :)
Awesome! Thank you so much! I had so many of my questions on ZwiftPower answered! As a 61 year-old I am hoping that Zwift adds some more granularity to the age grouping... ideally UCI-based
hmm so I've made my Zwift Power account but a lot of stuff seem unpopulated.. I think you mentioned it automatically updates with the last 90 days. Ive connected it to my strava. Or does it only populate once I've actually raced ?Thanks!
Ah... I missed that. The colored bars are actually variability index. They express it as a percentage which is a bit confusing if you are used to using the factor of the decimal i.e. 1.1. They would express that as 10%. It is telling you how steady you are over the course of a ride that would be your normalized power divided by your average power. If your normalized power and average power are exactly the same, your index would be 1.0 or 0% in their terms, that is almost impossible unless you have a fixed power held in ERG mode. So if it goes into the red, it would be highly variable. If you are doing a structured workout or a race, that is completely normal. If you are doing a time trial.... maybe not the best execution lol. I think the colors are a little misleading. They make a higher index red which people equate with "bad." Depending on the demands of the event, it could be completely appropriate. I hope that made sense 🙂
Great breakdown of Zwift Power! I've been on it for ages, but there was so much functionality that was lost on me as it's not the most user-friendly interface. Keep the awesome videos coming!
Another home run Sarah. I know you said you are not really a racer, I will look around for other videos but would love to see one on how to get into racing (technique, how to ride a race other than just push as hard as you can for the whole ride) how to find good beginner races
Quite a useful video. Been using Zwift since Covid started (well initially i started in 2016 but then didnt use it for years) but there were a few things there on ZP that i didnt know so thanks for that.
Wow - thank you. That explains why I really struggle to maintain position in the TdZ group races but make up places on the hills (not that TdZ stages are races!). I'm too light at the moment having lost a lot of weight last year and struggling to put on a bit now - 172cm/56.3kg (5'8"/124lbs) with an FTP of 214W/3.6W/KG.
Really enjoying your content , this was very informative. I’m also levelling up my quickly through your advice on route badges Thanks keep it up please
Thanks for clarifications on disqualification. I entered a Cat D race yesterday as I was listed in ZwiftPower as a Cat D rider, and ended up beeing disqualified in the end with tag WKG because the front group I was in pushed to hard in the end and maybe "over performed". I think its a bit sad that result was removed as we really pushed ourself to the limits in front and I find it a bit strange that you can be "punished" for over performing after a race. Racing should be about pushing yourself to the limits in my opinion. I would rather like you to have your result approved if you entered the correct category that you were listed for, and then forced in the next race to ride into Cat C. However, I will from now on only race Cat C, and am happy to be "upgraded" :)
Take a look at a few articles on Zwift's new category enforcement. I think it will eventually vastly reduce the need for Zwift Power. I think results will be housed there, but all categories will seemingly be appropriate at the line. They are about halfway through rolling it out on races with great feedback. It wasn't mentioned in this video because it wasn't in development yet. It should help to keep you on track in the future without having to be disqualified. The new model will allow you to keep your placing and force the upgrade for the next race because it will be collecting and categorizing you based on data along the way. 🙂
Thank you SO much for this, Sarah! You have answered so many questions I had, and shown me aspects of ZP that I didn't even know were there. I'm not a racer, but I just love the metrics. And thank you for the history as well ; makes me feel like I'm really a part of the community. Have you thought about doing a live Qand A?
Thank you 😃I think I am going to do one sometime soon. I've been thinking about some kind of live stream, it looks fun and a short Q&A might be a good way to learn the workflow and set up.
I'm trying to understand what the colors/graph means on the wattage numbers in the Normalized power column. Please explain each color and where these colors come from. Thank you
Excellent video! I've really enjoyed what I've seen of your content so far, kudos. The only thing not covered in this piece as far as I can see is the race ranking and Zpoints formulas e.g whatever's going on with those parcels of 600 pts? When I read descriptions of the calculation I understand all of the words but struggle with the meaning of the sentences that they are used in 😏 any insights to offer?
Ranking points are really contingent on the quality of riders you're racing against. If you pick up an A race with 50 riders at non-peak times and win, you're not likely to have a high quality field and will get less points than an identical race course and size at peak European/US times. It's kind of like chess, your ranking is wholly contingent on the ability of your competitors rather than the total number of high rankings. The formula isn't really straightforward. If you're looking to move up in rankings, look for races with higher ranked riders and your bulk points will be higher per race.
@@EverythingIsPhotogenic Thanks for the reply, helpful. I'm not looking to move up in the rankings as such (the potential ego boost doesn't justify time and effort cost required), but you've helped me understand what I'll need to factor into my thinking if I ever get the time and inclination 😏 Cheers!
Hi Sarah loving your videos but could you explain on the results the NP column it sometimes has different colours green/red/yellow/orange please could you explain what this means?
That is an indication of your variability index. Grey is low, under 5 percent closer to a TT effort with even power. Green is 5-7 percent with some changes, could be a workout with stable peaks and valleys or mild terrain variation. Yellow is 7-9 percent might see this in an organized group ride with a fee terrain changes. Orange is 10-13 percent maybe a harder group ride, workout, variable solo ride or predictable race and Red is over 13 percent. This is a hard race or solo ride, or a workout with more variable intervals. 🙂
Hi Sarah, tuank you so much for this. Just wondering about the validity of the 20 minute FTP calculation. If you do longer races, you won't be going as hard and thus this will pitch you down. My FTP for 20 minutes was calculated at 263w after 2 races (282+ in reality) yet I did 268w for 80 minutes in my 2nd race. I guess if you do shorter races, you'd put out higher efforts. If you only did longer races, I could see how your category could stay artificially low.
Do I need to update my FTP in profile manually? It seems not to change when zwift detects that it increased. I also thought it will update taking value from 20 min effort from best ride but i don't see it working either.
I just made a Zwiftpower account. Al my races I already did, aren't visual. But i gues that's normal and every race i'll do from now, will be registed? Thanks already!
Is there a wattage minimum when DQ is determined in cat D ?? I came in second place after a rider who produced 3.7 w/kg in cat D (a short crit race took less than 18 minutes). I would imaging he would get DQ unless there is a wattage limit. The rider only weigh 36 kg and avg watt was 133 = 3.7 w/kg. I know the race is less than 20 minutes but still 3.7 w/kg is pretty high for cat D.
I am not aware of a wattage minimum for D category riders. At 36 kgs I am assuming you are dealing with a minor or weight doping. I am not aware of how the platform handles minors. Failing that, the disqualification is likely pending.
These indicate the strongest part of your power profile in terms of percentile against others. Orange is best dark blue is second and light blue is third. It helps you to determine the strongest part of your power curve. If those numbers are highlighted in the raw watts side, you might be better suited for flat lands then you could look if you're a short power guy or a sustained power guy. If they're on the WKG side, you might be more of a variable terrain or climber. It depends on how many results you actually have on the platform, but it could help determine the "type" of rider you are. If you scroll up and click the power tab it shows the data in a different way and you can use the slicer on the right to see how those results populate over time. I don't find the data terribly useful in that it doesn't capture everyone's workouts or rides that aren't in an event, so you'd likely find a better curve on TrainingPeaks, Strava or other platform, but if you race for most of your rides, it could be more accurate. My curves, for example, aren't even in the same universe, but yours might be spot on 🙂
Unless I missed it- I didn't see mention of a couple of my favorite zwiftpower features. You can go to a segment from the top menu bar, choose a segment where you want to hit a certain time (for instance, that 1hr alpe du zwift) and there's an "Analysis" button that looks at everybody's results vs. w/kg, so you can get a feel for how hard you need to push to get that time. You also can use zwiftpower to compare data from multiple power sources. I have my trainer plus power pedals, so with their analysis I can check to make sure my sensors are giving good data (and I guess to provide supporting evidence if I were ever to race really well) I also really like looking at the power curves, and they have various places where you can pull those up. It's a really cool site, I hope that can figure out ways to make it faster and maybe include more explanation about some of the features. It's awesome to have such good explanations on youtube, but it would be great if there were more helpful info on the site itself.

Hi Marcus, I'm Sarah 🙂Depending on the caliber or riders, yes. If you race against higher ranked riders and finish reasonably well, you get more ranking points. The same thing goes for different times of the day. Peak hours draw higher ranked riders in any categories so you'll get more points than riding Asia/Pacific island times. B riders won't automatically have a higher ranking - think stronger riders that don't race a lot - but typically they are. The other benefit is you'll get stronger in the process 😉

Awesome vid as always! Love the detail. Like most things related to Zwift, Zwiftpower is a mind-bender when first encountered but is relatively straightforward when properly explained. Thank you! Having said that there is something I don't understand related to race results and placings: Last week I took part in this race zwiftpower.com/events.php?zid=1645480 - I was in the "L" category ("L" is a category in the WTRL league). On Zwiftpower's results for the event, category "L" (select "L" from the list above the results), the finish times don't match the placings i.e. the winner (indicated by the gold cup) did not get the fastest time. Instead the fastest rider is listed in position 42. Many of the places look wrong according to the finish times. Is this a bug in Zwiftpower / should I ignore Zwiftpower results for WTRL events / or is there a reason for this I’ve not understood? This was a Team Time Trial event so arguably the individual rider results are meaningless but I'd still like to make sense of what the Zwiftpower results are actually showing me.
I’m pretty sure the red numbers are your personal best for that metric across all your results, NOT the top number for everyone in that event. Example, I had a red number a few weeks ago for 30s w/kg for an event. It was my best 30 sec w/kg of all my Zwift Power results. But it wasn’t even close to being the best for that particular event! I’m not a sprinter! :-)
