For most of its history, programmes ran for 90 minutes and were largely entertainment-centred, such as thrillers, comedies and mysteries.

I'm assuming all those making negative comments didn't grow up in times scarce entertainment. You've all been spoiled by cutting edge audio and everything a click away. They're are many of us who deploy appreciate these memories.

Excellent story. Worth persevering for those who find it too old fashioned.

Wonderful. I adored this story. At last Doctor Death was bought to justice by the haunting of Queenie, Mike and the villagers that loved her. Xxxx ❤

I loved the news report at the end.So often these just start and are cut off.About the play I am so glad that child actors are now used rather than those annoying high pitched women's voices.

I only made it through about twenty minutes of this. Although I was interested in the story, the child's voice (yes, I realize it was played by an adult) was like having ice picks shoved in my ears.

Regrettably I listened to the very end to see if I could make head or tail of it but I couldn’t this play is so frustrating the best thing about it was right at the end when the man was talking about the light service as it used to be called years ago that book back lovely memories also enjoyed the news

Quite a rollicking story! Some ins and outs in the recording.....but if you keep listening it all holds together. Several minutes of BBC news at the end of the recording - pre-Berlin wall destruction, Kenyan independence and some sporting news! Blast from a distant past.

@@ChestertonRadio perfect response to a thankless listener that assumes on top of sifting through thousands of audio to select good stuff, editing & uploading you're going to write a synopsis for each & every post. And not even " thanks for posting- wondering if there's a summary? "( at least that would've been more polite) just " where's the summary"- I'm disappointed w people that ask these things because they're usually lacking in self awareness & won't ever gain any. Thank you for your time and effort w these uploads, much appreciated!!

Fancy that ! Marjorie (Louise "Steve" Temple) Westbury playing a common, foul mouthed Northern woman Queenie Holroyd in this 1963 Saturday Night Theatre production. Originally broadcast on Saturday 7th December, 1963.
A schoolboy misses an end of term school event, due to his discovery of a skeleton in the woods. She is clad only with a single shoe.
Also features Denys Hawthorne as schoolmaster and erstwhile suitor (of Mrs Sherratt) Tim Brennan, Austin Trevor as Dr. Heslop, Nicolette Bernard as Nicole Sherratt, Jo Manning Wilson (actress) as the boy Daniel Sherratt and the late, Glyn Dearman, (BBC Radio drama producer) as Mike Lord, who discovers "The Woman In The Woods".

All the characters are insufferable except for Queenie. If it wasn't for the others' recollections of her (she steals every ' scene' - yes I know she's figurative), I would have switched off.
Of course the Doctor is a psychopathic bastard. But that ridiculous self-martyr Nicole & her passive-aggressive boyfriend Tim - that couple is dysfunctional & extremely tiresome. I only stayed for the Queenie 'appearances'.
