Yes, this is exactly what Kurt Cobain and Chester Bennington did. Unlike guys like Corey Taylor (on the 2 first Slipknot albums) but he destroyed his voice exactly because of that.
This is the only way to scream in a healthy way. You MUST develop your pure singing voice first on those high notes. Most people fail because they don´t build up their tessitura. It takes 1 to 3 years (depending on how much you practice). I suggest you practice Queen and George Michael songs for a quick shortcut as their songs have loads of A4s and B4s.
After you have a good developed clean voice, the screaming part is WAY EASIER to learn. This was also my mistake for years until I watched a Chester Bennington interview where he said he just sang notes and applied a scream on those notes. It all made sense from there. Exactly what Kurt Cobain does on MTV´s Unplugged "Where did you sleep last night". Chester´s 17 seconds scream on "Given Up" is a D5 that he sings underneath all that filtering/compression! Because Chester had an amazing tessitura he could Sing clean D5s. And of course a D5 with filters will sound even more powerful. This was Chester secret for amazing screams

Thanks Kaz, I don't think I could have done this sound in the past very easily. Definitely is something that has built over time

Try to "tune" your voice with a piano, try each note if possible, don’t force it & be patient, good luck.
It’s better if you take singing lessons
