  • In this video the expert and "inventor" of tec-free natural pools - Franz Frischmuth aka the Teichdoctor - gives us more insight to the secrets of his experiences.
He explains to us why maintenance and suction in particular are important to keep the water clear.
He tells us all about the biofilm and what it does to purify the water.
He shares his opinion with us what to do to keep a tec-free natural pool - a Teichdoctor-Teich - clean and clear over the years and why skimmers and pumps can do more harm than good.

In video is said that you need 2 m regeneration zone to protect micro organism from uv radiation. Could you have eg about 1 or 1.5 m deep zone coveret eg by underwater wooden deck / steps to protect from uv radiation? Will micro organism survive there?

No, I am afraid not. I think the gravel is necessary for them because it gives them a lot of surface, too. But fact is, nobody has tried so far.... who knows?

@@teichswimmer6746 I asked wrong question. I was meaning deep zone. Dose this need to be 3.5 meter deep? Could you just have eg 1,50 swimming zone covered by 50 % with underwater deck and swip dirt under so want be disturbed until you do 1 year maintenance? Why deep zone needs to be so deep?

Hi Ines ! Hey I noticed he has plants in several locations in the pond you and the Teichdoctor are both sitting next to. Is that a true Teichswimmer pond in this interview? My wife and I are at an impasse, and we are hoping that using just a FEW plants (like a few water lillies and perhaps a grassy/ferny plant or two shown in the interview) would be ok? We have seen some people use separate pots for these, that just sit in the water. If we were wrong and it didn't work, at least they would be easy to remove. What do you think about this idea?

Hi, nice to hear from you again!
Yes, you are right. - The Teichdoctor has some plants in and at his swimmteich. - He says that water lillies - as the "queen of water plants" - are the only plants he accepts. - And as you mention above, those are usually planted in extra baskets and do not need at lot of substrate.....
The other plants you see are actually mostly marsh plants. They are situated in an external pool that is not connected at all with the swimmteich itself. Between the swimmteich and this extra pool full of plants runs the ring drainage to make sure that surface waters cannot intrude......
In one of the up-coming interviews with the teichdoctor (all in all, there are six) we will talk about this extra pool of plants, so you will see then.
So, our opinion is: water lillies planted in baskets are absolutely welcome as long as you make sure to remove the died-off parts regularly.
Water plants within the range of the ring drain, we would not recommend. Water plants in extra little/large pools outside the ring drainage are absolutely okay.
      What do you think?

What do you think about doing this in areas where it gets to 100F+ degrees?

So far there is only one swimmteich that we know of that has been constructed in a hot area and that is in Costa Rica!

Never heard about Matrual pools done this way. So how do you remove the sludge at the bottom yearly then?

Dear Mary, I am not surprised that you have never heard about "swimmteichs". The idea was born in 2005 in Austria and has not had the chance to spread. Not yet.........
How we remove the sludge on the bottom, we show you in this video:

Question... I'm making calculations and plans for my pool and I like the depth of your shelves. I think you did yours with 2 bags of gravel and a paving stone on top, I don't have my bags yet and I'm not sure how much space they take up but I want to build a shelf all the way around so the pavers sit at water level like yours so your feet get a little wet but its not deep and can walk all the way around. So I'm wonder what depth that shelf is in your pool below water level. My other shelves it will be easier but for the shelf around the pool I want pavers at a specific height to the water so makes it harder to know I suppose until I actual fill some bags of gravel to see how thick they are.

Hello again! - If I understand you well, the answer is: That shelf is about 25 cm deep. - On the liner you lay one row of gravel bags (just with the regeneration zone it is 2 rows of bags). On top of the bags you put the pavers. - That should make about 10cm - so that is - in the end - 15cm below the surface. That is built in that way so that you do not have to worry about a sinking water level. Our water level moves in that range of 15 cm. Rain fills it up again.
You find a drawing to that question in our book on page 65. - But I am not sure: Do you have our book? - I am happy to answer all your questions, but maybe teh explaination in the book would be even better......
