    Brilliant!!! I was thinking about doing the same thing to my G4, but it was a project that I had put on the back-burner, because I was going to remove the LCD and try to find a driver board for it, Because of your video I now see I don't need one, I didn't know it was a TMDS signal, your lack of a driver-board sent me searching :) Thank you for sharing this :)

      No probs! And no driver needed. A simple TMDS signal which, wired to an HDMI breakout plug or socket, will provide a universal HDMI monitor :)

    Thanks for uploading this brilliant video. I have an iMac G4 sunflower with a broken psu. As it is really hard nowadays to get it repaired or find spares I am intrigued to build exactly what you did! Unfortunately you already did the conversion so it's not that easy to follow for me.
    How much volts are on the Molex connector?
    Could you maybe provide a step-by-step guide for the mentally impaired just like me. I am clearly new to this and I'm afraid to damage the components in the process.
    Thank again!

      You're welcome! Having already modded mine I can't redo it which is why, in the video, you simply see me take it apart, talk about it and put it back together. However, if you visit Dremel Junkie's well-known blog at www.dremeljunkie.com he provides lots of step by step advice on modding the G4 iMac. The only one he hasn't done is the 15" so combine my pin-outs with his step-by-step and you'll have your own G4 'working' again! The molex is modded to provide +12v, +5v, +3.3v and ground all in one plug. Pretty much any old ATX PSU will give you these voltages. Good luck!

    Great video, thank you! I'm getting it to show my HDMI connected display, but it's very shaky and colours are wrong; Two questions, the 1k resistor is shown on your video between 18 & 19, whereas on the pinout, I see the resistor mentioned to be going to the inverter cable; Are there 2 resistors or did i misunderstand the pin-out for the HDMI?

    • @backroomboy4420
      @backroomboy4420  4 месяца назад

      Thank you! Blimey, it's a long time since I did this but wracking my brain to try to remember... there's a 1K resistor between pins 18 (edid +5v, purple wire) and 19 (hot plug detect) on the HDMI plug/socket and a 1K resistor on the inverter's green 5v wire which sets screen brightness (IIRC). Picture instability is more likely to be a poor connection on your HDMI breakout (if that's what you used). Try it and let us know what happens here in the comments. Good luck!

    Thanks for the video - have you got a link or part number for the HDMI breakout board you used? Only ones I can seem to find look to have the terminal blocks positioned much less conveniently!

      No problem! The board came from Pi Hut, part #104455 price £5.20. Here's a link to it: thepihut.com/products/panel-mount-hdmi-socket-to-terminal-block-breakout?variant=27740331217

    Is it possible to replace the existing monitor with a newer one? Like one for a laptop?

    Great video! I have a couple of questions however: 1) does the iMac sleep when the ext computer sleeps? 2) are the display pinouts different for the 800Mhz and 1.25GHz iMacs and 17in and 20in displays? 3) may any HDMI output capable computer drive the iMac monitor and what is the screen resolution?

    • @backroomboy4420
      @backroomboy4420  Год назад

      Thank you. 1. It does sleep but not in the way you might think, the screen produces a random, static collection of coloured pixels. 2. The 15" 800MHz G4 pinouts are different to the 17" & 20" displays but I have no experience of the 1.25GHz machine. 3. In theory, yes. Everything I've tried works...except my Hudl tablet. Screen resolution is 1024x768

    Hello! Can you
    Please give me the exact names of the parts I need? Like that hdmi port you
    Used and the power supply? And if possible the site thanks!

  • @joeventura1
    @joeventura1 Месяц назад

    can you clarify more on the power side, what is the reference to the resistor and how is that hooked up??
    Also why is there a resistor in the HDMI plug?

    • @backroomboy4420
      @backroomboy4420  Месяц назад

      The resistor between pins 18 and 19 is for screen detect and the one on the green +5V line switches on the panel backlight (IIRC -- it's some time since I did this project).

      @@backroomboy4420 Thanks so hooking the green line to 5v requires a 1K ohm resistor between the green wire and +5v yes?

    What do I do if I lost the original power supply and just have the monitor

    • @backroomboy4420
      @backroomboy4420  6 месяцев назад

      Just use an old ATX PSU that can be bought cheaply from eBay, all the voltages you need are available and detailed in the pinouts supplied in the video

  • @mikedeclemente
    @mikedeclemente 11 месяцев назад

    okay so i've got everything exactly what type of ATX did you use. Is there a model number? or particular identifier? thanks

    • @backroomboy4420
      @backroomboy4420  10 месяцев назад

      I'm on holiday at the moment but any old ATX PSU taken from a PC will work fine. Look for one that supplies +12v, +5v, +3.3v which is pretty much all of them. I'll post an identifier when I get back.

    • @backroomboy4420
      @backroomboy4420  10 месяцев назад

      Okay, I'm back. The PSU was taken from a Dell PC and has the model number H250AD-01. But as mentioned, pretty much any PSU liberated from an old PC will work just fine. Good luck!

      @@backroomboy4420 okay great thank you. The wires to connect the hdmi cable are different colors than your diagram.

    • @backroomboy4420
      @backroomboy4420  10 месяцев назад

      Hmm, that's gonna make it difficult. Are you working with a 15 inch screen? The other sizes of screen are different. If you are, I would match up all the colours that are the same and see what you have left over, making educated guesses from there. If you're not, do a search for your size of screen -- the others have been covered elsewhere. I'm afraid that's about all I can suggest. Good luck!

      Hi & thank you for a great idea & video. How stable is the screen with so much weight removed? Wonder if I may need some ballast to keep it stable at all angles?
