Every Texas Heavyweight Champion

  • The Texas Heavyweight Championship has a rich history with some of the biggest names in professional wrestling holding the title. We'll take a look at every champion from The Lone Star State over a 60 year span. This is not a deep dive and simply a list of the champions, but we will take a look at some interesting points along the way.
Edit: After this video had been up for a week I received a copyright claim. I don't know if it's legit or not, but I have found these things are more trouble to fight than they are worth. A couple of segments have been trimmed out due to this. Fortunately it doesn't change the meat of the video and the segments only contained extra information.
Note: I mistakenly said Peter Maivia was Rocky Johnson's father when he is obviously Rocky Johnson's father-in-law. Start piecing together 90 years of title history and a slip of the tongue is bound to happen.

I love all these old photos. Some pretty crazy physiques back in the day. Sputnik Monroe sounds like an awesome guy!

He was an interesting dude. Amazing that a pro wrestler sparked that kind of change in Memphis.

It's cuz they didn't do individual lifts ( necessarily) they did clean n jerks, bench, military press, flys, curls. There wasn't cable machines for isolation etc etc .
I don't know a whole lot about weight lifting back then, so take this with caution. Lol. Just my semi educated guess/answer

@@Sammy_Boy_Smith what's interesting is that steroids began being used in the 50s. I think you're right though, it's more about the change in lifting culture and new machines being invented later. Changing from strong men routines of old to more bodybuilding/powerlifting stuff

I'm pretty sure I was at that show in San Antonio, when David beat Bill Irwin. I remember him winning the title. It was I think my first show.

He never held the World title, but he was the World Class light heavyweight champion, which is what they would call the cruiserweight today.

My grandpa used to watch wrestling matches in fort worth in the late 30s and early 40s. He said he saw 2 guys one night just beat each other to a bloody pulp. The next morning he went to a Cafe where he usually went for coffee and breakfast and seen those 2 guys eating breakfast together. He said he lost interest in wrestling after that. I wonder if those 2 guys were on this list haha. Possibly so.
