Frankly, who cares who was faster - that was just top flippin' entertainment; top work GTN. Hats off to Joe though for smashing around the bike course on an antique (with a self-destructing tub) and for having the cojones to race in that kit. At least the Rudy Project lid did afford him some anonymity on the bike leg, I guess.
Yeah some rumors on the bike course thought it might be Faris or some other legend from back then. 😂 Noone knew and with no name on the bib it was a real mystery for all of us out on the course.
this video will become legendary in the next years. hat off to joe skipper that he did this with you guys. however, he should maybe consider racing with the speedo in Kona too. It would confuse the heck out of the competition for sure.
Saw you both on the race track and cheered you on when you came past me. Even had some time to chat with you Mark after the race in the transition zone. Joe did look awesome with that old kit 😅. Kudos to him. Man the weather was appalling.
I’ve been racing non stop since 1990. I have that Speedo top. Still have my Specialized Tri-spokes, and my Eddy Merckx bike that I used with Sidi shoes. 😂
No need to bring the english weather with you 😉 Age group 60 and older were allowed to wear a neoprene on all distances. No wonder you had only short notice because everything was communicated exclusively in German. By the way I was doing the middle distance and moral wasn’t at it’s peak after 96 wet and freezing km on the bike. But seeing you coming the other way right at the beginning of my run made me smile for the rest of it 😄 Such a great video and kudos to Joe for being such a great sport 👍
@@bbnd5476 well good on you 👍 It was probably more the moral than pace that took a bit of a dip for me as well but I definitely needed my rain jersey. As they say there is no bad weather only bad equipment 😉 I have seen athletes stopping at the petrol station to jump up and down, at a police car to sit in there and at an ambulance to cover under a blanket. Maybe the fact that we had a little heat wave before played a part as well. Anyway, gutted for everyone who DNFed and I hope they can strike back next year ✌️
Best GTN vid in years! Can we please talk about Dave Scott going 8:01 in 1989 at IM Japan in likely similar kit 😮😮 what would that equal with today's equipment
Thanks, great episode. Panning on doing triathlons on an 80's bike and kit too. Thanks to you, I realized I can just sew a leather chamois to speedos and be all set.
Haha, perfect video and the right man for the job, Joe. Not taking everything so serious and making some dry remarks left and right. You guys went gentle on showing Joe in speedo. It could have been much worse. Haha, great video!
I would gladly use that soft ride in every race! Such a cool looking bike!! When your as slow as me looking good is a little more important than speed 😂
I just want the frame to see if i can retro fit it any lol. Stretch the rear to get in 12 speed get someone to weld in a disc adapter, put carbon fork on it, think it would look just wild.
I still have my '97 Yellow Softride Aliminium V Frame bike with Secialized Tri Spoke Rear and Spinnergy Front wheel....old 7 speed Shimano105. Still take it out now and then for a local Tri Racing...
I think I overtook Joe about five times on the bike. 😂 But with that helmet, I had no clue who it was. The biggest mystery for me was who was actually wearing that awesome kit! Some rumors said it had to be Faris, but he would have dropped me more in the swim. Joe was slightly stronger on the climbs, which is why he was able to catch up again and again. 💪 I got dropped a bit on the run. Nevertheless, it was a pleasure to see Joe racing. 👍
Great video, thanks GTN and kudos to Joe for riding that bike and wearing those speedos! There aren’t many pros that are prepared to have fun and look a bit daft 😂
You chose the wrong wetsuit, at this event the iconic "Allgäu Hai" would be appropriate... BTW I have some from mid of 90s lying around and as of now swim the latest model(Speedpulsor II)
Critically, it would be interesting to know their respective power outputs. They seem to be the same size, maybe Joe has a bit more frontal area due to his jacked-ness.
Skipper did beat him on the run! Hence, I think we can conclude that the old-school tri bike did indeed save his legs for the run! So can we really say that the modern kit is better? I doubt it!
Which bike would you choose, retro or modern, regardless of the result?
Let us know in the comments! 💬
I was looking at this exact bike a couple of months ago on buycycle. It's definetly a classic!
This was the greatest GTN video of all time.
Totally agree 🤣
Thank you for letting us know you liked it 😊
💯
Joe Skipper = what a champ, thanks for this brilliant spectacle with Mark. GTN you did good! Well done 👏

Joe did look awesome with that old kit 😅. Kudos to him. Man the weather was appalling.
How many athletes gave up because they could not stop laughing at Joe?
Was close when I came out of the Water with Joe, but that was mainly because we were both rocking the Speedo
We lost count at 3 because we were also laughing
What an absolute legend Joe Skipper is. No ego no nothing just sticks the kit on and smashes it. Absolute hero 😂
Joe is a really great sport for participating in this.
And well done Mark for tracking down this retro kit in the first place.
This has been the best GTN clip ever. Joe is the best pro triathlete to get this done! Smiling from ear to ear the entire time.
That was fantastic to watch. Mark you really dug deep to have a spint finish, but Jo,just racked up another gear. Well done GTN
Both were jogging it for the video drama, well under their actual ability. The day Joe can't break 38:00 for a 10K he needs to turn in his pro card.
13:45 Hahaha that’s a children’s bike! Joe is such a good sport. Loved this video
Surely Joe is the only person on earth to actually make that kit look good..?
One person to wear it. 😂
Absolutely brilliant video ,fair play to Joe for doing that ,not many pros would take time to do this .
Always here for a retro kit video! Please keep them coming. 😄
Thank you, we’ll do what we can
I’ve been racing non stop since 1990. I have that Speedo top. Still have my Specialized Tri-spokes, and my Eddy Merckx bike that I used with Sidi shoes. 😂
This was the best GTN video EVER! What a great sport Joe is- I couldn’t stop laughing - what a legend!
Brilliant! Triathlon can be so serious and techy sometimes. This is so refreshing and fun!
Joe's such a beast and a top bloke too!
How about a race with all the pros only using old tech as an homage? would be so fun!!
Cracking video 😂😂😂 I was scared for Joe with the crappy tires in the wet 😮 . And congrats Mark for such a close finish 💪🥇
I see Joe Skipper, I watch. Never disappoints!

Freezing? It was wet, but the temperature was perfect for racing!

We want more of these “top gear” style videos 🎉
This is honestly the best GTN video I’ve ever seen, I loved it!!!
Smiled the whole way through this. I love that Joe doesn’t take himself too serious despite being a serious pro
This is an amazing video. Thank you GTN team and Joe Skipper!
Best GTN vid in years! Can we please talk about Dave Scott going 8:01 in 1989 at IM Japan in likely similar kit 😮😮 what would that equal with today's equipment
Loved it! Thanks for the great entertainment. Incredible work, Joe. Mark, you're an entertaining athlete.
And now: you go without aero bars and he goes with them. That‘s the real difference.
"Woot Van Art" 😂
Is this the GTN with the highest number of beeps for swear words you ever had to edit? Great vid, super entertaining, thanks GTN.
Great Initiative from Buycycle 🎉🎉🎉
Thanks, great episode. Panning on doing triathlons on an 80's bike and kit too. Thanks to you, I realized I can just sew a leather chamois to speedos and be all set.
Well played Joe I can see a lot of pro not being a sport about something like this. Great video!
Haha, perfect video and the right man for the job, Joe. Not taking everything so serious and making some dry remarks left and right. You guys went gentle on showing Joe in speedo. It could have been much worse. Haha, great video!
Really really really awesome video!!!! Kudos for the edit and everyone involved:)
Superb video, massive kudos to Joe for being game for a laugh. Keep em coming GTN 👍🏻
back in the olden days - budgie smugglers were such a big part of the triathlon kit that the RSPB almost became a sponsor 🤣🤣🤣
Bought two softrides over the last years. There is an almost funny problem; getting off. Literally.
I would gladly use that soft ride in every race! Such a cool looking bike!! When your as slow as me looking good is a little more important than speed 😂

Still take it out now and then for a local Tri Racing...
Did Allgäu triathlon last year. So much nostalgia, but I'm glad i didn't have English weather at my event. :)
Years ago, Specialized had Javier Gomez do the Des Moines olympic distance with old kit. That was fun! I believe he managed a top ten finish.
I think I overtook Joe about five times on the bike. 😂 But with that helmet, I had no clue who it was. The biggest mystery for me was who was actually wearing that awesome kit! Been waiting for this one 😎
The moment the music drops and Joe enters the frame... Is this cocaine bear??
(16:48... Gets me every time)
Great video, thanks GTN and kudos to Joe for riding that bike and wearing those speedos! There aren’t many pros that are prepared to have fun and look a bit daft 😂
one of the best videos ever guys, this was epic, Joe Skipper sending it on the SOFTRIDE lol
Hi Tec silver shadow what a blast from the past.
My favorite GTN video I have ever seen
Fab video and kudos to Joe for all the kit!
Great race!!
More please!! 😊
Really nice vid, loved it!
Fair play, Joes a good sport wearing those Speedos
Have to say, I love that blue color on Joe's bike! Fun video, thanks for the laughs :)
Thanks for watching!
Love the spengle rims.
Joes bark in between with that helmet mate I rewinded 100 times 😂
So good video! We can see the old bike tire completely gone 😁
I bloody enjoyed watching this!
This was awesome!!! One of the best ever!!
Glad you like it
Joe Skipper is a great sport for agreeing to this.🎉 Very entertaining 😂. Thanks for more great content 👏 👍
oh come on, BIANCI CAM :D
Ha ha! Brilliant! Joe looks like he's riding an old Raleigh Burner with Skyways!!
Dang!! Joe is a demon!!! And that Kit is the BEST EVER!!! Oh, but Mark's bike hands down. Joe's race kit though!!! Fire!!!
Joes rear tyre near bludgin of the rim at the nd there
Great video!
Brilliant video!!
What a fun adventure to watch!
It is fun when it’s not you running under the rain 🤣
Fair play to Joe skipper what an effort and in that kit
You chose the wrong wetsuit, at this event the iconic "Allgäu Hai" would be appropriate... BTW I have some from mid of 90s lying around and as of now swim the latest model(Speedpulsor II)
Amazing video thank you!
Joe's bike needed aerobars. Greg LaMond won the TdF in '89 with aerobars. We (triathletes) were using them well before that.
Don’t tell Joe that 😉
Lost it al 9:09 when it said nip cam in the top left😂😂
What a great sport Joe Skipper! 🙌
What a fun video! And what a good sport Joe is to wear that speedo!😂
I don’t care how shit Joes kit was I’m seriously impressed Mark was able to drop him on the bike. Joe is a monster. Great fun video 👍👍👍
Critically, it would be interesting to know their respective power outputs. They seem to be the same size, maybe Joe has a bit more frontal area due to his jacked-ness.
Well done for you both! I would choose the modern one for sure!!
That makes two of us, but that’s where the fun is
solid edit!
I want one of those frames just to see if i can retro fit disc brakes and sram etap onto it with aero bars. just think it would look baller
Such a cool video
20 mins long, posted 5 mins ago. You’re easy one to please 😂
with 5min it’s enough to get hooked
Bianchi Aquila! Even in 20 years’ time!! 🤣🤣👍🏻👍🏻
Skipper did beat him on the run! Hence, I think we can conclude that the old-school tri bike did indeed save his legs for the run! So can we really say that the modern kit is better? I doubt it!
What a great video. The speedo kit suited Joe. What an athlete and what a character. The people’s champion.
🐶 🐶 🐶
🐶🐶🐶
Nice Bike for Joe!!!❤The campagnolo delta brakes where not really build for braking 😂
One of the best gtn videos ever hahaha
Poor Joe having flashbacks of Helvellyn tri on that run 😂
Hats off to Joe and his naked performance under the rain
More Joe please
Ahhh. I remember racing in a Speedo back in the day. Now I’d be a granddad in a Speedo🤣
Well done Skipper and Gtn
the single nipple hanging out of his singlet is SO funny.
Greg lemond 1989 time trial 34.5 mph on an antiquated bike😮
Joe Skipper... what a sport!!
Campagnolo Delta Brakes 👌👌
Joe your the man awesome
Pretty sure the helmet was worth more than the bike 😂
Epic video
Very entertaining! Joe, hats off, but I think secretly you enjoyed wearing those budgie smugglers.
Great video😀
Thanks 😁
😂😂 Joe iiiiis a legennnd!🤣🚀🚀
Really fun idea, thank you 😂
This is awesome
