Oakland woman warns neighbors after evading potential carjacker

- Devin Fehely speaks with an Oakland resident about a nerve-wracking experience from Saturday, when she said she was followed for miles by another vehicle in what she believes was an attempted to track her down and carjack her. Now she wants to warn her neighbors about what to do if the same thing happens to them.
A couple of weeks ago in downtown Oakland, I was sitting at a curb parked with my wife, trying to decide where to go for dinner. It was late on a Sunday and the area was empty except for one car behind me. I noticed the driver had his door open and leg out the door, which was super suspicious, so I put the car in D with my foot on the accelerator. When he pulled up next to me, door still open and foot out the door, he stared back at me through a balaclava. You know I hit that pedal and bounced up OUT. Not TODAY.
Within a half hour I was home, I pulled the video, and I got the plates. I called it in and reported it to OPD, and I never heard back. One thing I noticed in the video later was the guy had a lookout/partner who was coming up over my left. Hoo boy, definitely a close one.
My buddy was shot in the eyes by a paintball gun - kids in a car almost blinded him - the Oak PD did nothing to investigate.
We’re on our own for now and at higher risk of violence- stay safe .
Probably best to eat at home for dinner. You risking the lives of your family for going to a restaurant
better start packing heat and invest in bullet proof vest in oakland.

@BKM I think the only lack of punishment is simply because police aren't catching carjackers, not due to any policy or anything but the sad fact is Oakland is a big city and there aren't enough police to look at every license plate out there... ok maybe policy of not allowing license plate readers or something. But these carjackings usually translate into using the car in a crime later like running it into the front of a business after hours to steals stuff

Guarantee you that if they had caught these carjackers they would have a rap sheet several pages long. We have to ask why are we having problems all across the country with not enough police. Something bigger I fear may be going on. Besides it's a small amount of criminals that cause a huge amount of crime, if they are punished and given an opportunity to rehabilitate it would be better than what innocent people are dealing with now. It must change this cannot be the status quo.

CHP HQ is right off the freeway, and those guys don't F around as much as OPD. Honestly, if someone wanted to mug you in front of OPD HQ, they'd still have a good chance of getting away.

If they would enforce the law on cars with no plates or expired reg, there would be a dramatic reduction in all crimes. These types of scumbags have been stealing cars, carjacking, stealing catalytic converters, and there's a group of them living in an encampment down my street. The common denominator? No plates on any of "their" cars (at least 50% of abandoned cars in Oakland are also stolen)!
If CHP would start running VINs and enforcing the law, we could cut down on this BS almost overnight.
A criminal crashed a car through a fence in front of my place two years ago. The cops found a couple extra license plates in the backpack he left behind. They just don't bother with plates at all now I guess. I'm strongly considering moving to Montana. This is too much

A year??? How about five years or never. East Bay County rarely issue any kind of CCW permit to regular people. You have to fall under one of their “ special circumstances”.
Everyone should be vigilant and cautious everywhere...not only when traveling in Oakland. And, with respect to the increases in all types of crimes-blame the criminals, then, blame OUR legislators who've authored new laws while weakening old laws to accommodate criminal behaviors. Example: prop 47.
Prop 47 was the start of all of this madness. And in Calif, there are less than .5% of CCW holders... what a mess.
Everyone should take at least one self-defense class in their lifetime, hopefully more. That's my background. And I learned that you have two options. You drive to a police station or a fire station, which ever is closer. That's it. Never go home, don't go to a friends house. Go to the authorities.
Go to an enemies house, so they think you live there; kill two birds with one stone.

I agree it is a good idea to take self-defense classes, but they are not going to stop bullets.
I was jumped/car jacked in broad day light and ripped out of my car as soon as I sat inside. I had adrenaline and pulled the guy out as he was jumping in which turned out to be a mistake because he ended up on top of me with his forearm across my neck. I’ve taken defense and tried everything I knew to get out but I’m 130 pounds he was grown man. I’ve never been in a real fight and he had been in prison for last 15 years.
Anyway, he got away and it took cops 45 mins to get to me in middle of a city.
They caught the car jacker a few states over, he totaled my car then ran on foot for 10 hours and shut a small town down.

My two sons and I left Black Bear Diner in Miliptas after we had breakfast .. upon walking to our car, I noticed a black Mercedes do a u-turn right in front of us (we literally had to stop in our tracks to avoid being hit) ... the Mercedes (a black one with no plates) then stopped right in front of a new Jeep and the passenger got out and proceeded to hit the back trunk window over and over until he could pull out a suitcase. Then they sped off. They were looking to rob tourists, and they did (BB Diner was near many hotels). Crime is out of control. I watched this just stunned to see it brazenly happening in front of a busy parking lot without worry of getting caught or identified.

I got chased in Oakland before, all you have to do is turn off your lights, drive toward opposite oncoming traffic, and try to crash into any police cruiser you see

Seems like the number of Oakland carjackings increased after the CA law requiring temp dealer plates in 2019.
Not sure what law that is. Can you explain?

@@bluechex7881no more driving around with dealer plates, you get a temporary paper license plate until the real one comes in. Not sure what that has to do with carjackings though.
@@deadtome44 It aint got nothing do with it at all. Carjacking increases are due to several factors. No more vehicle stops for "low-level" offenses: tinted windows, no plates, expired tags, you name it, OPD is not enforcing. And if they do try to pull drivers over? They can just speed away and the no pursuit policy ends the chase and here we are.

Learn about evasive driving. The worst thing you should never do is when driving with a potential carjacker in front or behind you is to stop. If you do, the carjackers will try to get you!

One of those - 1% of the total - got 99% of the media coverage, so that's probably the one you know about. And he was white (hence the extensive coverage).

Because law abiding citizens that live in democratic run states (like California) firearms are not an option for self defense. You must get creative. I carry two airhorn powerpacks. One pocket size (1.4 oz) and one large cannister (12 oz). I also carry ear protection both cable ear plugs and ear muffs. Ear protection is especially important in an enclosed space like inside a car. Whenever im going somewhere that potentially could be dangerous i don't leave home without these. If your a taxi or uber driver and a ride goes bad this could save your life. Even if you get a ride that refuses to get out put on ear protection and push the button on that airhorn. Trust me they WILL get out and fast! Remember "situational awareness" and have protection at hands reach at all times!

I had a similar scary event about 15 years ago. Black car no plates. I was only 2 blocks from home around 9pm. I think I saw something I shouldn't have. A couple of young men by a garbage can. I glanced at them. They jumped into said black car and chased me. I drove home and they didn't pursue but drove on by. I had pulled up my driveway. Later I realized I should not have
driven home but should have driven to the nearest cop shop. I didn't know where my local cop shop was. I know I was lucky.

I disagree- she's already been far more heavy-handed on criminals than her predecessor. A big part is because Thao wasn't so insulated from reality (experienced crime and homelessness herself, unlike spoiled rotten Libby, who never had to live with this shit). There's only so much a mayor can do, but so far, I'm impressed with Thao's continued desire to actually deal with these scumbags.
