I remember when my band director gave our ensemble 4 "hard" songs (this, Bonehead, A Few Good Men, and Delta City Blues) and this one was the only one that we ended up playing in concert because the other sections couldn't play their features in the other songs.
The trombone solo was also the first improv solo I've ever transcribed and learned in my life.

Yeah Luke!!! I play the Bari Sax / Bass Trombone part and basically have to start the song, but other than that the part is fun. I keep listening to this version though and want our band to be this good. I love the tone from the sax section in this piece, but particularly the lead alto.

The feel is difficult, Evan. The problem, from my perspective, is that we are all having trouble getting the feel just right. In order to play funk, you really need to be able feel sixteenths, and our problem seems to be either that we're all feeling it, like, an eighth off from one another, or that we simply can't feel the funk. The piano part is rather easy given that I only play for about 40 measure of the this 140 measure song, the note placement is still difficult.

Luke Bryant huge thing when playing funk like you said is the feel...and my mind was always set on the off beats. A big part of funk are off beat shots and groove. Played this song and The Chicken in highschool many moons ago and that was what helped me with da funk!
