Over a school break, I went home transposed the Alto part to tenor and memorized the entire thing. Then we came back and our director said that we weren't playing it
I remember getting drafted into jazz band my senior year of high school because the trombone player outed me as a bassist and the director wanted to play this one lol. he knew our guitarist wasnt going to be able to carry this one.
Lmfao kinda felt. I do bari in our jazz band but our lead trumpet outed me as a bassist and ours is graduating so now I have to do bass since we already have another bari in jazz 😭
so glad my friends forced me to be in jazz band this year as a senior in high school. during one of the concerts in the middle-ish of the year, we got to see another school from the district play this tune, and my GOD, it was 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
The Big Phat Band came to the Gene Harris Jazz Festival yesterday and they were UNBELIEVABLE. We were all blown away. I honestly wanted to cry, but I couldn't stop smiling! They played Jazz Police as their encore, and I just AHHHH I can't even describe how amazing the whole thing was!!!
Bethany Matson i was there too and it made my whole entire life. I was so happy for one that I got to see them and that they played this so ng because I love it!
Bethany Matson I was also there! They were so good and our band director's hype for them didn't fall short at all. At the end I was wondering if they were gonna play Jazz Police and then my question was answered!
Agh right?? I had never heard/heard of Jazz Police until then but I love it so much now! Especially because our band director got the music for it and we're playing it at our concert this week :)
Yes most of his viewers are either directors or high schoolers. Gordon Goodwin is one of the best jazz creators up to date, he should be known in high school jazz bands, or even any band.
I’m playing the bass part for this and I wanna die lmao Jazz band just started as we just finished marching band and to start the year off, we get the hardest fucking song ever
I got to play this over the summer with Eric Marienthal in the Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Band Camp, and while the band I was in didn't sound anything like the Big Phat Band, it was still cool to have Eric himself conduct and guide us through it!
I'm at a summer camp for Gordon Goodwin's band (meaning I'm working with some members of the band themselves!!!) and I'm doing second on this song. As we were playing, Gordon himself came in and listened to us play his own song. It was terrifying but really cool!
This was my High School's encore song for 3 years; it was the crowd favorite. We also played God Rest Ye Merry Gentelmen, Let it Snow (for Christmas obviously), Hit the Ground Running, High Maintenance, Rippin n Runnin, and a few others that we had but never performed (I think Phat Pack and Count Bubba were 2 of them).
I remember back in Middle school I signed up for Jazz band and we were playing this. Unfortunately at the time I didn't appreciate it and dropped out of Jazz band pretty early on. I wish I enjoyed this song as much then as I do now
I play Alto and I think that was a bad choice, the tenor sounds more rich and deeper. It's not like blasting bass low like a bari but it's not screechy high like an Alto. Shoulda kept it to the tenor it fits the song better.
Absolutely love listening to this piece and am simply psyched out that you can actually hear the guitarist, not to mention the bassist has some awesome jams and grooves. However, as a trombone player, I'm not really sure what the trombones are doing most of the song. Trumpets get some cool licks and chances to shine, saxes always get cool licks, guitars actually stand out, bassist is groovin', drummer is rockin', and even the piano has some little fills here and there, but trombones sound like... they're just making trumpets look better by adding meat to their chords, or doubling the low saxes on some runs, while trumpets go off and do their own thing here and there. Maybe at about the 0:48 mark, but that's about all I can think of. Unless Trombone 4 is doubling bari sax throughout the piece, which if he is... kudos. I know some jazz bands and pieces do that. Still would love to play this piece... always love playing the bass bone for jazz band. My trombone professor always referred to the bass trombone as the Instrument of the Heavens because of all that we have to do (blast out bass pedal notes with clarity and power to assert our band's dominance while still housing a tenor trombone range).
@@wesleyevans9112 As an alto player, I think it's a really great instrument (better than trumpet), but you can't compare saxophone to saxophone. That would be like the civil war of jazz or something
As listening to my High schools Jazz band perform this song, sounds identical as peformed in a studio. And yeeeeeees Keep up with the bari, slwoly dieing out, as a Bair sax player myself (only one to Highschool marching band XD) its a hard job to keep with rest and still be heard cough tubes block out and baritones cough
My jazz band at school did this during our 3 day showcase! Sadly my choir had to do a patriotic song in winter (instead of our song from our concert called Winter Moon)

I was there as well, it was so good to listen to them live. It is the best concert I've been to, we are playing this song next year because of them.
MY SCHOOL OPENED THAT!!!
Gordon Goodwins Big Phat Band is amazing, The Jazz Police is the best one of them all.

As a sax player, I respect that
Playing this on bass guitar has given me severe mental scars. Good song though.
I'm recording the bass line right now and I'm crying in frustration.
Practicing this for a gig oh God lol
I've been playing for 4 months and my mind is going "*AAAAAA-*"

God, Big Band swing like this & Moanin’ by Charles Mingus really get my adrenaline pumping and I love it when it happens.
It’s more of a mixture of both, although I only used the former for lack of a more fitting term.

trying to learn sax and this song at the same time in 3 days ive been given the impossible
who the fuck is putting you through this torture?
How do you learn sax in 3 days by trying to play jazz police
Its possible, but maybe not for you
This brings me back to high school. I LOVED playing this song on bari sax. Too bad we couldn't go to competition because we never had any trombones.
i play bari sax, we're going to competition in a few weeks. I'll carry on your legacy.
My jazz class is doing this for our jazz consent and it's going to be lit. This is the best jazz music

This is a very fun song, I played lead alto for this song a couple years ago, now I play guitar in the band. SUCH A FUN SOLO ON GUITAR!!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember playing this for my first jazz band concert and the piano died midway, still catchy though :)
My teacher has me playing the tenor part an octave up on clarinet. It''s an absolute blast, but WOW is it high!

being the only bari is hard but really fun!xD
Omg samexD
There's only supposed to be one bari
Tbh bari is discount bass in this song, sorry

Nathan Weber there’s plenty of bass in this song
My band director turned the Tenor solo to a Alto solo, I feel so offended

Don't worry about that, if you wanna hear a tenor solo, listen to Channel One Suite.
Trust me, you won't regret it
I'd be concerned if you weren't
