  • I made a headless guitar from an old Ibanez and filmed the entire process, DIY tight budget of $175 with cheap easy to find tools.
In search of a knock around travel guitar which I could fit in small places as well as plug headphones into and play clandestinely, I hit a wall. all the options were either expensive, fragile, short scale, unplayable, unpractical or some combination of the previously mentioned.
I decided to DIY it, others have done it. So I bought an ebay pawn shop special Ibanez grx20 and a Chinese headless bridge and nut and grafted them together.
    watch and see...

Cool, can you add a headatock back on so it doesn't look stupid?

Just realized how easy I have it with a cnc router. Doing a similar headless, except its gonna be an exact copy of the spirit.

Nice work! I like that you left in all the small mistakes and explained how you corrected them. Kudos! I hope that instrument will serve you well for a long time.

    Love the relic look

Only downside is that now you can't access the reuss rod

A cool build. I do similar stuff. I mod Ibanez replacement necks and make my own bodies. Moding an existing body is an even greater challenge (as you know by now). I did one build with that exact same bridge, but the trem spring is too stiff for Ernie Ball 8's. I prefer the Steinberger "R" trem (AKA "Overlord of Music"). You don't have to pre-cut strings to length, the trem uses a thumb screw - not an allen, and it has a built-in hardtail lock for fast and easy restringing (lock it, tune it, thumbscrew to float, unlock, done). It also has a left-hand position for the whammy bar - but only comes with a right-hand whammy bar. I use the horizontal style of nut installation, as opposed to the tilted back style you used. It seems to be the more common method used by most manufacturers (including Steinberger). For bridge placement, I typically set the saddles all the way forward, and position the bridge so the saddles are at the theoretical saddle line as measured from the nut line. This typically puts #1 string spot on, and then you adjust the rest to the normal double compensated pattern. You should give your guitar a proper paint job. It's a nice build - it deserves a nice finish.

  • @anestheticolor

Well done!! I like customizing guitars. I have changed for two guitars their look and shape. Thumbs up 🤘🤘🤘

Good video. I wondered about doing such a mod myself, and I came to the conclusion that its probably best to semi detach the headstock and leave a little room for tuners that only act as string lock. I would then go ahead and get those single tuner barrels for the bridge end and mount them on top of a 2 point trem plate, maybe a 6 point. Would probably have to stand them off a litlle and then lower the whole thing to be able to get lower action. Ive seen someone do this here on yt. Pretty crafty. That way you can still use the og trem cavity rout as opposed to the steinberger style trem.

    Nice man!

best of luck with that museum its hard enough to do a music museum let alone a guitar museum let alone a Gibson museum. I cant see it ever making money and im one of the guys that would go

  • @jbmvinyl

So, maybe obvious question.. or not so obvious, how will you adjust the truss rod now?
