This is on Bill DeWitt Jr. For some weird reason, he continues to live in fantasy land and wants to continue to reward Mozeliak for winning the 2011 World Series which apparently meant a lifetime contract and Mozeliak’s choice to step down when he saw fit. It’s bizarre. You can mention making postseason all you want, but honestly Mozeliak hasn’t done much since 2013. And the one manager he hired who was worth a damn he fired because he had the nerve to challenge his authority. Well you see what Shildt is doing for the Padres. So tell me why Mozeliak has been allowed to overstay his welcome……..

Mo is being rewarded for helping to procure all of the massive tax breaks and free cash handed out by the city, county, and state for the stadium and Ballpark Village. He also helped get Dewitt the current tv contract. Don't be delusional. Billionaires care for nothing over growing their net worth, and Mo has done a great job of that. Dewitt is not going to fire a front office person before their contract ends, as the front office people know all of the shenanigans that were pulled to get those tax incentives. Notice that Girsch was moved into a "VP of Special Projects" role. This is what large corporations do when they want an executive gone, but they don't want that executive talking to the press. He'll get paid to not show up to work unless specifically told to do so once in a blue moon until his contract ends.

Having Moz remain the voice and hand behind the tiller is madness. Been a fan for 60+ years. He is lost in his own hubris. Woefully tone deaf and out of his depth. The MLB coaching staff destroys young players once they arrive. Sure the MiL system needs retooling. However, players arrive ready. They are successful, and then the foolishness they have to endure destroys them. Players are fine. It is the leadership of Moz and the woeful coaching they get when they reach the parent club. As Bernie Mikolas says; “it’salarming….madness.” “I don’t know how they could have handled it worse. Thinking the Dewitt’s are losing massively in the ballpark village and the upcoming season’s ticket sales. Hoping the team is bought by a Steve Cohen type whale. A fan, who puts his love into the team, and has the money to treat it as a love, like a child you spend money on to help succeed.

Amidst the collapse of traditional media, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (P-D) still serves as the journalistic repository for daily Cardinals coverage, and the paper devotes significant resources to that dept.
Yet, Katie Woo's coverage of the club in the Athletic is akin to St. Louis having a second newspaper devoted solely to the team; she functions as an entire sports dept rolled into one.
Clearly, the Athletic recognizes her utility in that respect especially considering how many MLB clubs DON'T have dedicated reporters on their platform.
The underlying problem in sports journalism is journalists' dependence on the clubs they report on for access - to off-the-record conversations, post-game interviews, etc., instilling a quality of self-censorship in their reporting.
Katie Woo operates under no such imperative. Her recent expose of the faultlines in the organization is a story only she could write. There are many talented reporters on the P-D's staff of the P-D, but no other reporter bears the same singular authority she does.
We're lucky to have her and lucky that the Athletic provides her unfettered access to cover this club w/ diligence and integrity.

Maybe half time at first, half time DH, switching with Burleson, and maybe catching every now and then? I would really love to hang on to him and Arenado and Grey to build around if possible...

All they needed to do was swap the big contracts, Arenado, Goldy, Contreras, Gray (about 100 million) and allocated that to 2 front line starters and couple of bench bats extend Helsley still have about 30 mil left for minors reset and run it back.

Let us not be in such a hurry to pass judgement on the Cardinals ownership or management, as the team only missed the playoffs by six wins this season. While the Cardinals did not hit as many home runs this season, a lot of this might be due to the laces on the ball as opposed to the hardness of the ball. This allowed pitchers to throw breaking pitches that moved much greater than prior years. Hitting a round ball with a round bat is extremely hard and the enhanced breaking of the ball has made this even more difficult. The umpires have not helped the Cardinals this year calling obvious balls as strikes. The Cardinals have several players that know the strike zone and there is a huge difference between and two and one count and a one and two count caused by umpires who do not consistently call the same strike zone. Busch Stadium requires a much bigger blast to hit a home run as opposed to most other ball parks and the enhanced laces on this year's ball may have been a factor in so many balls that were warning track outs. They were also a victim of many dink hits by their opponents this year. They obviously need to enhance their training and minor leagues. Major league players, in most cases, are extremely arrogant and not willing to listen to advanced hitting and pitching techniques, but hopefully they will pay attention in this off season. Paying a pitcher fifteen to twenty-five million dollars for four wins over 500 is a preposterous business decision. Some of the advanced pitching instructions have allowed increases in fast balls by as much as five miles per hour. There is a tremendous difference between a 93 MPH fast ball that moves and a 98 MPH fast ball that moves. The proposed rule change of forcing the starting pitcher to go six innings will also be a factor in next year's results. I however believe that enhancing the minor league operations and promoting advanced pitching and hitting techniques is extremely important for the future and that will make the Cardinal team even better in the future.

They can absolutely bump up spending on player development significantly without cutting MLB payroll and still be extremely profitable. In terms of revenue the closest comp to the Cardinals is Atlanta. The Braves have a great development system and do not go cheap on big league payroll.
