This song was based on an actual event, Mark Knopfler went into a local place and a band calling themselves The Sultans Of Swing were playing jazz to a small audience. He wrote the song about them, but it could be any band struggling to get noticed. In this live performance, the drummer's dad was in the audience. He cranked it up a notch, and Mark and the rest of the band went along for the ride. And yeah, Mark can definitely make his guitar cry and sing.
I was at this gig and it still stands up as one of the best, 40 odd years later. These guys were the best of the best. Even now, you won't see better. Terry Williams was the star for me And now you have react to Telegraph Road from the same gig, its the law
Fantastic performance by a phenomenal group fronted by one of the all-time greatest guitarists! We just need some idiot to come along now and suggest that they were "underrated" .
Already done on another reaction channel 😅😅😅 why do these MORONS think it's cool and hip to say... "so and so ( insert name of extremely famous and talented musician) is underrated? They said that not only were they underrated but they hardly got any recognition and weren't really well known while they were together 😅I had to point out that they were one of the biggest most popular bands of the 80s and one of the best selling bands in the world, so I think they got a load of recognition and Mark Knopfler is considered one of the greatest guitarists ever and is not at all underrated.
It’s fun to watch you react. If I remember correctly, this song is from the late ‘70s. I saw Dire Straits in concert once, and I had the same complaint I have with this live performance: They sped it up. It’s to fast (at least it is for me). Still, the concert I saw was terrific!
Mark Knopfler is just a sensational guitarist that is for sure! Love all the band. Have listened to this numerous times on RUclips - FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mark Knopfler (the one in red) is not only one of the best of all time, he's still working! He made 6 albums with Dire Straits, as lead singer/lead guitarist/songwriter for the group. And then he made 10 more under his own name. Aside from that he's done 9 movie soundtracks and a bunch of collaborative projects with other artists. You've almost certainly heard some of his other songs in movies or TV shows. If you start exploring his work, you won't run out fast. He's 75 now (as of December 2024), and his most recent album came out in April 2024. He was nominated for a Grammy Award in the current batch, for Best American Roots Song (even though he's British). And he owns a recording studio in London.
Those who have watched this about a million times tend to view it as one of those perfect moments frozen in time. But I've heard many different recordings of this from college radio. When they were touring they did this every night.
Wow, what a nice surprise to see your pretty face again. You really helped me get through the pandemic and I've been watching you ever since (the movies too)! Glad you got to react to this great performance. Cheers from Toronto 🤘🎵✌️
Welcome back! Missed you~ not sure where you got "disco" but I survived the disco era and can't hear your reference. They looked like they were having a ball! ❤
Oh!! GRACIAS!!!!
Mark Knopfler is a top three guitarist for me. He blends emotion, precision, and energy into the guitar to produce sounds no one else can (except maybe Gilmore).
Fun facts, Mark Knopfler is left handed but uses a right handed guitar, also he doesn’t use a pick, just his fingers. He’s a legend and I think you’d enjoy other songs like Telegraph Road, Money for Nothing and more. He’s a storyteller, most of his lyrics are based on his real life experiences. This came out in the late 70’s and was super popular, lots of air play on the radio. There are two keyboardists in this performance, you don’t see a close up of the second guy until towards the end of the video.
This Live-version gets even better for every time hearing it.. "Money for nothing..", "Telegraph Road", "Brothers in Arms", "Walk of Life" , " Romeo & Juliet" are some more to do with Dire Straits..
Wow, I was wondering where you were! Welcome back indeed. 💟 This is a great performance. 🕊☮🎄 The back story of this piece is interesting and pertinent. "The inspiration for "Sultans of Swing" came to Mark Knopfler while he was in Ipswich, England. He was at a nearly empty pub, and a jazz band was performing. Despite their talent, they were largely ignored by the few patrons present, who were more interested in playing pool and talking among themselves. At the end of their set, the band announced themselves as "The Sultans of Swing," which struck Knopfler as both ironic and poignant given the unremarkable setting." So, when he sings 'we are the Sultans of Swing,' he is singing about this band he stumbled upon in the pub and he is singing about the individual members.
I always assumed that it was in South London because he mentions 'London town' and before that right at the beginning he also mentions a river. The story goes that the band were wandering around part of London when they stumbled upon a live music venue - that doesn't really fit with Ipswich in my opinion. The part about 'competition, too many other places' can only be a large city, not a one-horse town like Ipswich and it's tractor boys (A football reference from me).
@@carefreescot Well, I recall reading firstly or somehow recalling it as Lousianna or somewhere jazz and blues known. Read differing versions thought I shd ask Chatgpt. Knopfler appears to have written London Town because it gave broader appeal to the song, which it does. That's according to Chatgpt. Fantastic performance and piece of music either way.
"Not disappointed"...?? You should be honoured to still being able to listen, learn from and enjoy such great artists....those arent made today....real instruments and live.... :-)
RUclips leave India alone! We enjoy her content, and u come along and try to piss on our parade! Hang n there, India! We got your back, and we love you❤

Watch Amy Winehouse acoustic versions of "Valerie and Back to black" It's the only advice I can give you! Love you 🤗😚🙂 xxx
This guy Mark Knopfler is a virtuoso. Ranked as one of the greatest guitarists and songwriters of all time. National treasure. Amazing band.

The main guitarist / singer doesn't use a guitar pick. He finger picks.
Good to see you back 👍👍

Disco would be an insult to this group it is British Rock.
👋 welcome back girly girl and your 😊
Loving Maxie
Telegraph Road from the same concert and the original video of Brothers in Arms are two more of many Dire Straits hits you could try.
💖🙂👍🤘🏼
Brothers in arms . Avrai le Lacrime......
It’s about a mediocre band playing in a Pub(bar) in South London UK, the Band were The Sultans of Swing.
No disco on this. Disco is the recycling clinic
Mark doesn't use a plectrum. He's finger pickin' good. 🤣
Girl, be sure that this is anything but disco!

Check out also the same band song "Brothers in Arms". Best anti-war song in existence.
Took away your strikes, awesome! 😎

Mark’s guitar was euthanized after this performance. Poor thing was beyond saving. What a shredder.
