Such a deep song and one of the few I like better in the studio version as the video just makes it so intense. Make sure you see DS live though. The “Alchemy” concert was awesome, they were so good and perfect live. “Telegraph Road” is an absolute masterpiece, it will blow you away

A masterpiece written by Knopfler depicting a story of the Falklands war and a British soldier who was badly wounded and cared for by his fellow soldiers before eventually dying. Performed live at the 'On the Night' concert and also the 'Nelson Mandela' tribute performance, both outstanding.

What a great reaction, this song and telegraph Road to me are his best pieces. What you referred to as magical in his guitar playing in this song is the way he does not even do his typical plucking, but he does a lot of very subtle bending and sliding, making the guitar cry. The guitar is wailing, just being shattered over the subject matter that it is addressing, how can you ever do it justice, Mark does.

They have so many great songs, but this one is my favorite forever.

    When a guitar sings ......
The song was written after the Falklands War in 1982 where Mark lost a friend. Its all about remembrance. The sketched visuals are from the two World Wars and other conflicts. But there are two 'scenes' from the Falklands: One is from a video that shows a soldier on a stretcher being carried to a helicopter with a leg blown off and he is giving a thumbs up! The other shows an injured sailor from HMS Coventry being helped across the flight deck of HMS Invincible.
It is a stunningly haunting track and speaks to all combat soldiers who are all 'Brothers in Arms' regardless of sides.

If you've never seen them, you should do Sultans of Swing and Telegraph Road from 'Alchemy Live' video.

What a brilliant era for music. To be able to pull so much emotion through a guitar, awe inspiring. Levels above the commercially “created” claptrap of many of todays artistes.
Was the one you can’t recall Romeo & Juliet? Worth a reaction if you don’t know it ❤️

-We can see a classic scene with this song, on the TV show "Miami Vice" in the 1980's, (in last scene of the episode: 'Out Where the Buses Don't Run')

The opening shots of the storm-wracked waters reminds me of the Navy hymn, "Oh hear us when we cry to thee, for those in peril on the sea." I suspect that may be intentional, because the message is the same.

    Great reaction, thank you!
Yes, this song let's us speechless. Actually, there is just nothing to say, to add, to the story Mark tells. It is just pure emotion and great story-telling.
I would suggest "Telegraph Road" from the 1983 Alchemy Live.
It is in my opinion one of the greatest songs of rock history. Maybe you want to check it out.
    Best regards from Switzerland

No weep, no feel. This song was both a protest and a celebration of war and fallen comrades. Despite being about the Falklands war, it could be applied to all wars around the world, the stupidity and the devastation it causes, the pain and the unnecessary loss.

It's a misconception that this is about the Falklands. It's about the futility of war in general. The clues are in the graphics with scenes from WW1 and WW2.

So Knopfler was wrong when he said he said it was inspired by the Falklands war. Interesting.

Mark Knopfler is indeed extremely talented as a composer and guitarist, and story teller. There is a host of other songs from that era and beyond worth checking out. He even wrote the score for a major motion picture, called "Local Hero". It's a quirky drama set in norther Scotland and his main theme draws from old Scottish folk tunes and weaves a hauntingly beautiful piece that so moves people, many ask for it to be played at their funeral, or that of loved ones. It's called "Going Home" And here is a rendering of the tune against imagery from N Scotland:
ruclips.net/video/6pR1cVgk7Is/видео.html ( Going Home-Wild Theme- from "Local Hero " motion picture- Mark Knopfler )
He or Dire Straights also have much livelier, lighter works too like Lady Writer:

And this lovely ballad is exquisite:
