I wonder if South knew how far behind econ they were? They didn't seem to prioritize killing eco as much as expected. North did almost as much ego damage with their piddling stream of Wagner's as South did with the giant navy.
Yeah, I think they were trying to go for the kill instead of taking the easy damage

i always found torpedos in this game really underwhelming >< even high tier experimental seacraft still have the same piddly little torps that do very little damage T_T only harms seem to ever get much value due to the range and fire rate of theirs
Air dropped torpedoes are the best torpedoes overall, so long as cruisers and aircraft carriers aren't around, but ship-to-ship torpedoes are very lacking, mostly because of the travel time and the overkill waste.

Megaliths and Atlantis have some pretty decent DPS on torpedos. At least they used to, no idea if that is still the case in FAF and after all that time. Seraphim T3 subhunters were also strong.
