  • The Pittsburgh Steelers declined Najee Harris' fifth-year extension Thursday, making 2024 a contract year for the team's starting running back. Was Omar Khan's decision a mistake? Or a sign of the new direction the team is taking with different values from the Kevin Colbert era?
Chris Carter and Jenna Harner debate whether the decision will backfire on the Steelers, or if it's part of bigger plan for the direction of the team? A closer look at the Steelers' salary cap future along with the new draft picks like Troy Fautanu, Broderick Jones and company, might show a plan for the team moving forward with the new front office.

Najee is a back that tires defenses. His 3 and 4 yard gains are different. He wears them down and that opens up play action. I hope they sign him to an extension.

He ranks about 12th with RB…that’s places him around $8mil/year…With a better offensive system and oline he will easily be top 5…and the fact that he doesn’t get injured like the rest…he is the exact back you need for a run heavy offense…he will grind defenses down all year.

I hope this is not an unforced error. I love Najee's running style. The dude is a violent runner. His stiff arm is a weapon. He's the type of running back that forces DBs and LBs to make a business decision when they're coming up to make a tackle. I love JW's running style, also, but defenses don't fear him that way.

  • @stevensharples286

From the outside, it appears to be just a prudent business decision based on uncertainty for obvious reasons; new OC, QB and a rebuilt line.
The risk is 100% assumed by the team in this case as they could potentially price themselves out if Najee has a strong year and there’s no reason to think he won’t put up at least 1K yards again.
The only way I see this not working in Najee’s favor is if the plan is to get Warren more touches which I don’t believe is likely but certainly a possibility.
The other reality is that they may be close to adding another WR to the roster and just need that is xtra money to sign him.
Either way, I’m sure all parties have talked this through and I believe that Najee will be compensated.

This move doesn't make a lot of sense on the surface. Some like to speak about a "large" salary cap number next year without looking at the number of FA'S and the corresponding market value associated with those players. Jaylen Warren is also a restricted FA next year. Unless the team has mileage or injury concerns about Harris? It's a confusing move. It seemed like the combination of styles and body types of Harris and Warren were a good fit.

I'm seeing alot of comments about O-Line but that isn't the issue...There's are a couple...First, Steelers shouldn't have picked a RB in the first round that year...THATS IT...!!! This is why people don't pick RBs in the first round...There isn't a option to pick up for second rounders and beyond...Second point, People are blinded by all these moves Steelers have made but to me I don't like it alot because we're consistently taking risk that have cost us...We shouldn't have gave up Diontae Johnson which we didn't replace yet.. Now before we consistently had replacements like so many times before.. Also Why not keep Johnson and Mason Rudolph and fix every else then only need QB next year...Image if we had this same draft but didn't lose anything... Russell Wilson will need a contract next year or Justin Fields...Now like Mason Rudolph why would Najee sign next year...I know I'm suppose to be excited but my home team but it doesn't feel like we have a foundation anymore..Its like we're playing all in but not exactly..😮

I wish they had flipped the split between them with Warren getting the bulk of the touches. Also, they should offer Warren the extension this offseason and pair him with a RB on the rookie deal next season. I’d only keep Najee if really cheap and that’s unlikely.

    • @Aaron_Stonerock
      @Aaron_Stonerock 15 дней назад

@mike2687 no, Najee is better. He seeks contact so will be tackled more. He gets more snaps. Plus a missed tackle might get you half a yard before the next guy gets you. The initial hit will get the credit for it but you might push him and 4 other guys another 5 yards before you go down. Disclaimer, I haven't looked at yards after contact. So I could be way off and am fine with being wrong. It's how I remember tge last part of the season, though. But you know Rolling Rock is known to distort your recollection of the night before sometimes.

    • @mike2687
      @mike2687 15 дней назад

@@Aaron_Stonerock - well there are yards after contact and then there's the notion of not meeting contact for another yard or so--in that, Jaylen's quick decision and burst gets him further into the whole faster than Najee--Najee gets before very little ground is gained.
I can't confirm the OP's numbers of broken tackles but they seem to indicate Warren having more YAC yards per attempt. And Najee isn't pushing hardly anyone 5 yards--he averages 4.1 per carry.
Harris isn't the explosive athlete that Jaylen has--JW is the big play guy while also giving them an efficient all around game putting defenses on their heels.
Najee is a grinder. A fine player on the rookie deal.
With that said, I don't want JW getting 22 rushing attempts per game... 14-16 is about right.

@mike2687 you make a valid point. I just like, I guess you would say the more violent, runner when we need a TD. Warren is more likely to break a big one as a splash play. Harris is more likely to get you 4 when you need 1.

I think if Harris has even just a decent season, he would hold out on year 5. Even if he has to sit.
We all know the shelf life of RB's. Especially, physical runners like Harris. So for him this is good. It gives him a chance of a big contract sooner. It also gives him, if Khan explains their decision correctly, to actually be more loyal to the Steelers. Kahn hopefully said. Hey, we know you're going to be worth much more than what your 5th year option would be. Let's work out a longer-term deal with more guaranteed money up front. Or hey, when you hit free agency. Give us a chance to work something out. We gave you the option to maybe get two big paydays rather than one.
Something along those lines. Because he has to know Harris will be a hold out. Knowing his personality, and im not at all saying it's wrong, he's going to get what he deserves. And if he gets hurt. They have options.

It's only an issue when podcasts such as this report something that shefter or some other so called in the know journalists say something about it. It's as if whatever someone says, that seems to spout legs and everyone's talking about it.
I know it's a slow news cycle, but sometimes, you just have to wait and see what the team is going to do instead of jumping the conclusion about things you know absolutely nothing about.

We said in this podcast multiple times we have to wait and see what comes next, but that this was a layup situation that is puzzling for them not to take. And this is from people who talk to people inside the building who were also surprised.
This isn’t a slow news cycle situation. You may not like it when we disagree with the team but we don’t always agree with everything they do.
Nothing here was manufactured. All real responses to a concrete thing that happened. Feel like you should know better than to accuse this show of doing something it did not.

I don't think people are thinking about Arthur Smith wanting to feature the explosiveness of Warren in his system.

Smart move by the Khan Artist!!! Najee has poor field vision and I believe Warren is a better runner! I still love Najee, but at a cap friendly price!!! We can’t pay two RBs! We need to keep Warren too!!!

Is it possible that you DO NOT take the fifth year option for Najee because you want Justin Fields to feel like he is more of on a trial than he actually is...do you know what I mean? Is the Harris fifth year option wholistically related some way to the Fields fifth year option?

Why give him a 5th year extension for one extra year at 6 million…when you can sign him for multiple years at 6 million a year (Incentive driven)

@@nickvalenti8359 Najee averages 3.9 yards per carry (career). Yards after contact doesn't mean much when you are constantly getting hit at the line of scrimmage or in the backfield. He's not as instinctive as Jaylen Warren in finding holes.

They are going to sign Najee to a second contract that is financially beneficial to both him and the team. That’s what Omar does. Omar, Tomlin and Rooney all love Najee; I have no doubt they talked about this already. The media and fanbase just overreact because there’s nothing to talk about right now.

Steelers, as good as management is, they mishandled Franco.
They didn't keep the OL in top condition for Ben the last few years and another trophy or 2. Same OL problem for our new QBs. Didn't judge Mason or Kenny fairly while letting Canada decompose the team for 3 years. A disrespectful Treatement our 2 homegrown drafted QBs who would have improved the Steelers chances for trophies immediately. Instead management let their egos cloud their judgement, and dumped these QBs. Management kept a cancerous AB around who negatively affected Bell. They are good, but they could, they should be great and treat players better and instill better discipline .

Najee will get his money but not at top dollar, and if he refuses to sign , the Steelers will give the offer to Jaylen Warren and go and get another RB for a cheaper price.
The Steelers money will eventually be spent on Justin Fields, he is the future franchise for this time. Nahee i believe will agree and sign when its all said and done.

In Omar We Trust! They will give him an extension…3 years $15-16 million with maybe $10 million or so guaranteed. It’s the right play…almost $7million guaranteed for year 5 and the negotiate after that…was definitely NOT a smart move. All will be well though.

I really think pittsburgh will resign najee after his rookie deal is done but don't want to have it drag into najee 8th season. If they extended him, then I doubt that they would sign him for the future. Seven years for a work horse RB sounds about right. Maybe too long...

Conner has done great for the Cardinals and produced at a high level. Bell took a year off from football and that’s why he fell off.
Losing Bell dearly cost the Steelers and he’s the biggest reason they won their last two playoff games. He had worse numbers than Harris when he had a subpar OL. But was given time and became a superstar.
