    This is the second home in which ruclips.net/user/postUgkx0jZ_lGlDVJhDnmagEU8gn47cmfPNlLQU we've replaced our "regular" doorbell with a Ring video doorbell and we really enjoy it. It is very easy to install and it works very well, with a clear picture through the app and good in-home use (we added the chime, which is also easy to install and doesn't require another thought to use).

    The wired Nest doorbells (as well as wired Ring doorbells) are great products. HOWEVER, they don't tell you upfront that these wired doorbells all have an internal non-user-serviceable battery. IF you will be using the doorbell with a mechanical chime, just be aware that at some point, the battery inside will fail.
    The internal battery on these units are used to provide temporary voltage to the doorbell unit when a mechanical chime is used. When someone presses the doorbell button, power is temporarily routed away from the doorbell to the chime inside the house. The battery keeps the doorbell powered for the 1-2 seconds while this happens. Over time, this small battery will be unable to deal with the voltage drop and your doorbell will lose power and reboot itself. If you don't rely on a mechanical chime or if you use the Ring wireless chime, than it won't be an issue. If you do use a mechanical chime, depending on your environment (which includes usage rate, weather, temperature, etc.), the doorbell will stop function properly at some point in time. For most users, it seems to be somewhere between 1-3 years.

    Hi just seen your Starlin vid thank you. I need to start my home security now. We’re all Apple so HomeKit yes please. But I want a doorbell two outside cameras to begin with and like the look of the Google doorbell and Eufy 4k cameras but I want HomeKit to run them. If Eufy is out maybe Nest do something similar. Is Starlin the way to go?

    Looking at your video at about the 4 minutes mark, it doesn't look like you drilled a hole for the wires to feed through. Did you just have them going into your house a different way? How much wiring is exposed to the outside? We don't have the ability to drill into the house so we're looking at feeding the wires through the old mailbox slot that leads into the house. It's no longer used. Thank you for any advice you can give!

    • @tmbrgndy
      @tmbrgndy  3 года назад

      Hi Crystal, that’s correct I didn’t drill a hole into the house for power. I plugged in to a standard wall socket in our garage and that goes to the doorbell... I found a small gap in the garage wall to run the cable through, you literally only need a tiny gap as the power cable is really small.
      If it helps I can put a video on our Instagram shortly to show you in more detail?
      Thanks for watching :)

      No problem... I’ve put a story on our Instagram @tmbrgndy (link in the description of this video).
      Please excuse the very sloppy cabling at the moment as it’s only temporary until I tidy up with more clips and will channel it into the door frame so it’s completely hidden.
      The white cable is for the doorbell, ignore the grey cable behind it as that is for a security light which I will be replacing with a Phillips Hie floodlight in the summer.
      Hope this helps, let us know if you need any more information 👍🏻

      Hi JD Designs, it’s been a while since I wired the doorbell but from memory it in my case it did not matter which cable went to which terminal on the doorbell.

    I'm really confused as to how it works without using the chime adapter. Isn't that what connects to the wifi??
    My low-voltage wiring has a short in it and I am wanting to just do this wirelessly (after going through three transformer replacements), but I'm confused as to how it would work without the chime adapter.

    • @tmbrgndy
      @tmbrgndy  3 года назад +1

      @Who Knee Verse Review Thanks for checking out the video.
      The chime is completely optional and not required as long as you provide the doorbell unit with the required type and level of power.
      We are using the power adapter shown in the video which takes care of that. The doorbell unit connects to WiFi, not the chime adapter.
      As long as you have some sort of smart speaker to play the chime noise then that’s all you need.
      Hope that helps?

    • @tmbrgndy

      @Who Knee Verse Review from what I’ve read, it helps regulate how much power goes to a traditional chime (if you use one) and for how long.
      I’m not great at electrical theory so I don’t fully understand it but I’m glad that we can use the Hello without a chime!
      Good luck with your setup 👍🏻

      Hi @Chris, thanks for watching… The only option I’ve come across are the seasonal themes for Christmas etc but that only works with Google home assistant devices like nest speakers or Sonos etc.
      Now we are using HomePod minis as the chime, we only have the standard “ding-dong”.
      The starling hub (see our other videos) is getting regular updates and features added though so maybe in a few months.

    What is the disadvantage of not using a chime bell? Why didn't you use a chime instead of an adaptor. If the network is down can you still hear the bell if you use a chime or not use a chime?

    • @tmbrgndy
      @tmbrgndy  3 года назад

      Good questions... We didn’t use a chime as had no door bell before this so would have meant running additional wiring inside the house and then repainting etc to make good.
      With a smart speaker working as the chime, we didn’t need to worry about any of that extra hassle and was a good excuse to buy several HomePod minis which we have upgraded to since filming this video.
      It is true that if the network was down, then the homepods would not chime but you would still get notifications on your phone and watch if you have them.

    What chime does this work with

    • @tmbrgndy
      @tmbrgndy  3 года назад

      Hi @Kelly The nest hello will work with most pre-existing doorbell chimes but you will need to refer to the wiring instructions included.
      If you want to use a speaker as a chime as We have done then you can use any speaker with the Google assistant built in such as nest’s line of speakers or the Sonos one.
      We are currently using HomePod minis as the chime but that requires another piece of hardware called the starling hub (check out our other video on it for more info)
      Thanks for watching and your comment 👍🏻

    • @tmbrgndy
      @tmbrgndy  3 года назад

      Sorry Joe, there isn’t really much to show as it’s literally a plug and a length of wire that is connected to the 2 terminals on the back of the doorbell.
      I may do a follow up video with more detail in the future but appreciate your feedback.

      @@tmbrgndy I appreciate your response. I ended up drilling a hole that on the inside of the house was behind the door molding, which I took off first. I routed it behind the door and baseboard molding so only a small section of wire is visible going into the outlet. I also had to shorten the wire as it had about five extra feet. If you do a follow up, that might be useful info to include.

    • @selianboy8508
      @selianboy8508 3 года назад

      You will only need to have any idea of wiring if you also hook this into an existing doorbell chime or buy a new one of course. However full instructions are there in the app and online to sort this out.
      There is zero wiring - bar the connection to the back of the Hello Nest itself if you simply use your existing Google Nest/Home Nest setup or equivalent equipment you may have. You cannot go wrong wiring this either as it does not matter which way around you attach the wiring.
      Point to note though is that you MUST have the transformer and you MUST NOT simply attach a mains' 220V into it! This is something I know a friend did and found a really 'DOH!' moment was to be had! Thankfully he is still around to tell the story.
