If you're going on a high altitude trek, note that it is going to be cold at any time of the year. Even in peak summer, the temperature will drop to zero or sometimes, even negative temperatures. So it is important to learn how to stay warm. Take a look at the video for more.
Experiencing soft winter snow in the Himalayas is enthralling, no doubt. But winter in the Himalayas also means facing fiercely cold weather. The day time temperature will be around 8-13°C, whereas the temperature drops as low as -12°C at night. To be able to brave the winter cold and moreover, to enjoy it, you need to be well prepared. And for that, layering up is the mantra!
Having at least five warm layers is essential. Make that six if you are more prone to cold as I am. Here is what you need to carry for your winter trek to the Himalayas.

Omg i've loved all these videos! There are so useful and so clear.
Hi Swati, could you make a video with tips about maintaining personal hygiene during treks as we would sweat a lot during the treks. Would be really helpful.
Excellent video. No waste filler. Straight to the point, no overly smooth and fake script.
Only thing is...perhaps distinguish between 0-15degree Celsius and -10 to 0 degree weather during the day.
Thanks. Love the range of consistent videos and topics, and the fit looking presenters:)
I love Indiahikes.
Mountain weather is very erratic and changes fast. Follow follg layer system.
Layer 1: Baselayer, wear nylon or woollen
2: Mid-layer- stretchable and breathable (Fleece or poly)
3: for colder temp: for outermost layer, which is shell layer. have a windproof jacket preferably with a hood.
4: For very cold temp, remove w proof jacket and wear a down jacket.
While climbing up, have to remove one by one, as per the requirement and the weather
For LOWER layers, follow the same procedure.
These tips are quite useful for treks on heights.of low temperature.
very good advise of common sense which most trekkers refuse to follow. The secret of controlling heat is layers. In olden days in winters for going out Grandpas used to wear trousers over pyjamas, to trap the heat. It is the circulation of hot air between layers which keeps the body warm.
thanx, Swathi for educating.
Thank you sir! You're absolutely right on saying it's an age old mantra! :)
hi, can you please make a video on “pin parvati pass” in himachal pradesh.
i would suggest to wear woolen cloths or u can also wear what locals of Himalayan region uses... those cloths are the best insulators of heat.
Good.
While trekking compression bottom is useful
What about monsoon treks, I'm going on the Tarsar Marsar trek in end of July
Nice
hi swathi
I wanted to choose best jacket for my brahmatal trek ..i am in confusion to buy jacket this is my first himalayan trekk
canyou help me in choosing best jacket
Do you prefer a synthetic jacket or down jacket for when you stop for extended periods?
At Amazon site I find a product warmee sachet is good or not
I want to go kedarnath in may , September month
Sorry if very basic question. what's the difference between a hoodie and and a fleece jacket ?
Insulated jacket with fleece lining at both sides to help your body release extra heat and also help your body to breathe.
Hi Swati, in cold weather, is it a good idea to wear a dryfit tshirt as the first layer when layering up? Incase if one begins to sweat during a trek, would it be better to have a dryfit tshirts as the first layer so that the sweat does not soak up the garment? Or would a cotton tshirt be better to absorb the sweat?
How many layers needed for sandakphu trek in mid October??
What’s your suggestion in the month of mid July on track for Amarnath yatra? And Can you guys have make any Custmr care support or number for calling?? Please reply 💐🙏🏻
Hello Swathi, thanks for the tips. While I was browsing for thermal wear online, I came across an adhesive body warmer. I've not used it before or have any idea but reading the user reviews I understood that it helps you keep warmer while you sleep in places with low temperature. Any idea about this product and do you know if this is a good one to carry along?
Hi Murali, I think I know what you're talking about. I've used something similar without the adhesiveness just to test it out. Honestly, you really don't need such a thing. I've found that the best hack to keep yourself warm is to tuck a bottle of hot water in your sleeping bag (make sure your bottle doesn't leak). Keep it near your chest or in between your thighs and you'll be warm all night. You don't really need any other artificial heat.
Hey hi, I needed to know what can wear for bottom ( Kedarkantha ) and also shoes for the same Trek
M going to kedarkantha in 14th February batch
Hi Swathi! We are planning kedarakanth in the 1st week of April. Kids of age 11yr and 7 yr are with us. Do you suggest any extra measures for them ? Thank you :)
Hi Vidya, it's wonderful that you're taking your children trekking. They will surely be more energetic than most people on the team. Just ensure you take enough warm layers for them - at least 4-5 because there will be snow in April and the temperature will drop to -2 or -3 degrees. Also, try and take them on a few local treks before KK to see how they like it. You'll get a fair idea how they fare and will be able to take pointers from that experience to the Himalayan trek.
Hi Swati. Could you please share the links to buy these clothes. Love all your videos. Thank you ☺️
Some clothes are from Decathlon.
Some from the Indiahikes store - store.indiahikes.com.
Others that have been knit by my aunt and grandma! :)
Roopkund trekking in the month of September will be considered as monsoon or winter trekking..??
Monsoon
at kedarkantha winter trek temperature falls down to -5 ° C , so what layering do you suggest? I am on the 31st batch of December.
Hi Arif, I must warn you, the temperatures will drop to around -11°C. You will need 5 warm layers. Carry two woollen sweaters, two fleece jackets and one hollow-fill or padded jacket. While trekking during the day you'll need just one or two layers. But after you reach the campsite, put on at least three layers. By 5 pm, wear all your layers. Don't forget your woollen cap/balaclava, neck warmer, synthetic gloves and woollen socks. Each of these things is imperative to keep you warm at that altitude. With all these layers, you'll be super comfortable even in that temperature. :)
Swathi Chatrapathy
Thanks for the info, is the quechua xlight down jacket is a good option for the outer layer??
@@swathichatrapathy9347 hey Swati what do you suggest for windproof jacket? Is it important for them to be waterproof too or a softshell is enough?
Hi Swati. Very informative video as usual. I am going on my first trek to roopkund in May end. I was wondering is it essential to carry one pair of undergarments for each day? As I don't want to overburden the bagpack and it is an 8 day trek.
You could change once in two days. Alternatively, you could take cloth liners for your underwear so you just have to change those. That way you can reduce the number of undergarments you take. :)
Swathi Chatrapathy thanks for responding 😇
Hi swathi how abt thermal ? I wonder u didnt mention about it ?
Hi Santhosh on a winter trek you need thermals for sure. On a summer trek, in May and June, you don't really need.
Could u plz tell me how many layer is needed for Sandakphu trek in March or February??
SAndakphu tends to get very very cold and windy. You will need a minimum of 5 warm layers and if you're prone to feeling very cold, then 6 layers.
what tents can we use in high altitude cold Himalaya
You'll need a tent that can withstand around -10 degree Celsius. Dome tents (not too big, something that would fit 2-3 people) would be your best option.
Mam,Is there some alternative to down jacket or padded jacket .?
Not really, those are the only two kinds of padded jackets. For your last layer, you could also go for something like this - indiahikes.com/adventure-worx-windblock-lumi-jacket-review/
But it will not be water-resistant.
Swati while trekking its just one layer and in camp is when we hv to layer up is it
That's right. You stretch to two layers max (tshirt + jacket) while trekking.
Hello Swathi.
You're bideos have been really helpful in preparing for my upcoming trek in Annapurna next October. So I have a question, instead of a neckwarmer can I use a Buff for cold and wind protection?
Hi Miguel you could use a buff. You could also use a turtleneck jacket and skip the buff / neck warmer. But make sure you have a woollen cap to cover your head.
hi swati ..i am planning to go to sandakphu in last of january..can u give me some suggestion about the temperature and trouble i may face..
The temperature will be low. Right now, we have news that it is very cold and snowing on the upper reaches of the trek. Make sure you carry at least 5 warm layers because the temperature is around -5 or -6 degrees at night.
is sleeping bag necessary?
If you're trekking with Indiahikes, you won't have to carry a sleeping bag. Also, most of the Sandakphu trek has tea houses on the way, where you will be staying. You will camp just once on this trek.
This time the cold will be extreme due to la nina. Is it possible to trek in Himalayan for a first timer? I did not trek in winter's surrounding with snow. Will it be possible for someone like me to trek in Himalayan considering the climate changes?
Yes you can trek during the winter season,. Please refer this article for more information indiahikes.com/how-to-prepare-for-a-himalayan-winter-trek-gears-layers-fitness-snow/
Am I the only one who watches all this videos from India Hikes and treks with Trek the Himalayas
Arun Vishwakarma the videos are free and are helping trekkers. Watch away.
But I guess you are the only one who is watching very good videos and then still making a bad decision.
I'm watching too :)
U obviously aren't the only one watching these videos....
What I love about these videos is that they contain absolutely no nonsense or stupid useless gimmicks.... Stress is entirely on delivering the accurate information with a crisp smart screen presence.
Hi swati,
How many layers need to carry in kedarkantha trek in feb..
You'll need a minimum of 5 layers in February. Take a look at this article. It will help you with layering up for winter - indiahikes.com/layering-himalayan-winter-trek-jackets/
Hiii Swathi,
can you suggest layer for Monsoon trek?? (Hampta Pass), we are on August 2018 batch.
Thanks:-)
Hi Sachin, you'll need at least three warm layers. Two fleece layers and one rain and wind-proof layer. The last layer is your most important one, especially when you're trekking in monsoon. Don't go for a down jacket. Pick up a hollow-fill wind and water proof jacket. That will keep you warm and dry.
Hi Swathi, I'm going for Hampta Pass trek in September 2018. I am a first timer and I have a lower resistance to cold. How many layers would you suggest. I was thinking to take the 3-in-1 jacket from Decathlon (the one that is wind and water proof jacket with a fleece jacket inside it). If I carry this 3-in-1 jacket, is there a need to buy an additional rain jacket or just a poncho would suffice in case it rains? What else would should I take along? Would appreciate your quick reply.
Hi Jalpa, I have low resistance to cold too. I don't ever go to the mountains, no matter the season, without at least three layers and thermals.
The three in one jacket will work as your outer most layer. But instead of that, I would recommend going for a separate fleece and a separate padded jacket. The three in one jacket has only the fleece for warmth. It's too expensive for just that.
Go for two fleece layers, and a separate padded jacket like this - www.decathlon.in/p/8398139_sh100-women-s-warm-snow-hiking-jacket-purple.html#/27-200-xs
This is water-proof as well and will hold off rain for some time.
A combination of layers will help trap more body heat and keep you warm as opposed to one jacket. So go for the flexibility of three separate layers.
For a list of everything to take, head over to this page - indiahikes.com/hampta-pass/#itinerary
Swathi Chatrapathy Hi Swathi, Thanks for your quick reply. The jacket you have sent the link above isn’t in stock anymore both online as well as in store in my city. Now, what would you suggest for the three layers. Also, when you say - 2fleece layers, do you mean that 1Fleece Tshirt and on top of it 1Fleece jacket? Could you please clarify this. Awaiting your reply. Thanks.
Hi Jalpa, I usually wear tshirt + fleece jacket + fleece jacket + padded jacket. This is for post sundown. If you don't want to buy that much, buy one fleece and one padded jacket. You could wear 2 tshirts and a fleece jacket and a padded jacket.
Hi Swathi, when you say tights for the lower body . Do u mean a thermal pant? Is it okay to wear a thermal pant and trek
Hi Deepa, when I say tights, I mean something like fitting track pants. Avoid wearing thermals while trekking because they'll get wet/sweaty/dirty. Keep them for the night only!
What if I carry 2 pairs of thermal pants. I can keep one for the night. So is it advisable to use the other one during trekking? Also I had another doubt, what is worn in the bottom while we retire into our tents? Is it the same trek pants??
And thank you very much for responding 😊👍🏻
Hi Deepa you could do that. Thermal lowers are light anyway. You won't need it on the first and second day mostly. You can wear it for your summit climb. Inside the tent, just wear fresh thermals and your trek pants on that. That will do.
Thank you !!! 😀now I have to buy one thing less 😉
Should we wear thermals during the actual trek?
Hi Anshul. That's a no! Don't wear thermals while trekking because you usually sweat when you trek and your thermals will get wet if you're wearing them. You should keep your thermals fresh and dry so you can wear it at night.
I am really very sacred becoz of cold & my parents too so they are hesitant in send me to a Himalayan trek in January. 😔
Well Chaitri the Himalayas are cold throughout the year, even in summer. So if you're going to trek in the Himalayas for the first time and if you have never experienced extreme temperatures before, then go for a Himalayan trek in April. That's a good time to test yourself and your endurance of such temperatures. The days are warm and the nights are cold. So you'll understand how much you can withstand.
I only have down Jacket and it's of Columbia company it's a good one which can resist upto -10 with a two layer so I want to ask can I replace it with padded jacket
Please answer in terms of winter and summer both
Hi Rohan, you can surely replace a padded jacket with your own down jacket. That shouldn't be a problem. But down jackets don't have any kind of water resistance. So make sure you carry a good water proof layer, like a rain jacket to tackle rain.
Note that even though your down jacket will keep you warm, you will still need to layer up. One jacket will not be enough. So make sure you carry 3 warm layers in summer, as suggested in the video, 4 in post-monsoon season and 5 layers in winter.
@@Indiahikes thanks it will be very helpful
Also want to ask about Nylon Jacket it they are good alternative of padded or down or not I have purchased one but haven't tried outdoors
@@rohanagrawal5937 Both padded jackets and down jackets have a certain filling in them which makes them warm. Down jackets have down feathers of ducks and padded jackets have a polyfill material. These layers have small air gaps in them which trap heat and keep you warm.
If your nylon jacket has such a filling, only then consider it a warm layer. Most nylon jackets are usually thin and used for rain only.
@@Indiahikes I have a Columbia jacket which priced 8399/- It don't specify the temperature it can bear but it content shows its nylon alos have a good
And feels good as per appearance
How ab heated jacket?
You don't need a heated jacket. It's a very heavy investment, and not worth it. Doesn't usually last more than a few hours.
What about base layer?
Thermals for the night. A comfortable full-sleeved tshirt for the day. :)
I've seen people of wan village dwelling in a single fleece and lower 😛
True, if only we all lived in Wan or similar mountain villages :)
Is only one trek pant enough for a 7day journey
We'd advice you to wear one and carry another one. The other one is back up if it rains.
What is your Instagram name?
I want to talk with you!
I wish to join with ur treck...plz give me an opportunity to join with u
I would suggest everyone not to wear cotton clothes while trekking. You will sweat while trekking and cotton clothes get wet and take long to dry. Prefer synthetic clothes.
