    One of the things women do while planning their trek is check the calendar and see if their period dates coincide with their trek. It's important to keep track, but it's important to learn how to manage periods on a trek as well. Periods are no reason to postpone or trek. They are as normal in the mountains as in the city.
    The subject is periods. Menstruation. Chums. A reality that women deal with for five days of every month. Moreover, it’s for women only, making it feel like a taboo…even if it isn’t. And so care is taken to spend those five days as discreetly as possible.
    Sandhya UC, who has been trekking for 15 years, doesn't let anything stop her from trekking. She gives all women trekkers tips to manage their periods on treks.

    swati I have one question. during periods, the iron count in the body is supposed to substantially decrease right? What should a woman do about it? do you recommend supplements for a altitude trek? And would a lower iron count affect a woman's ability to trek in altitudes?

    • @swathichatrapathy9347
      @swathichatrapathy9347 8 лет назад +5

      +Aditya Modi During periods, the iron content in the body decreases but the body tries to maintain it by its mechanisms. But if there is heavy bleeding during periods, the woman may develop iron deficiency anaemia and would require iron supplements to compensate the iron deficiency. Iron supplements should be taken in consultation with the gynaecologists. But we also wouldn't advice a woman to trek if she has heavy bleeding and an uncomfortable period.

      It does affect.i had once a sudden onset of breathing trouble and panting while climbing a railway overbridge and climbing stairs in my school. It would seem that my heart would burst out of my ribs... I was so upset fearing that I had developed a heart problem, that I kept crying for few days.. Suddenly I realised is my hemoglobin OK? On getting checked I found it to be 6.5 whereas normal is 9-11, but no medicine can recoup the lack of iron so quickly that you don't have breathing problems. Except for blood transfusion no medicine can refurbish iron quickly.. Iron supplements would take at least three months to bring it to a manageable range..then someone suggested me to take the broth of a green saag called KULEKHARA in BENGALI which would raise iron from 6 mg to 7mg in a week... Immediately I started and indeed in a week it was 7, then by the end of month it was 10 at least panting and gasping was gone. Hemoglobin would matter in trekking. But what I have heard is, hilly people have already raised hemoglobin by default, much higher than people on plains because they need hemoglobin for the sustenance of life there. Exercising increases hemoglobin bcoz body needs hemoglobin for extra supply of oxygen to the cells of muscles.
      That's what my question us is Swati.. Can our body make emergency arrangements like production of more RBCs or more blood if the body cries for oxygen during trekking?
      Secondly due to gravitational pull does blood gets accumulated in the feet or lower limbs? What to do in such case? , take rest for a while or lie down somewhere with feet up for a while?!!!

      True. I was on a trek and I got my period there. I asked my trek leader and he provided me an entire packet of pad. Though there were men too, they cared a lot and they given me time and they even make sure that no one is surpassing when I was changing. They never barge in even I was in tent. They always asked before coming in. Even they helped me in carrying my bagpack. I was very tensed but all the team cared and comforted me. All men are not same. Some are just gentleman 😇

    • @swathichatrapathy1058
      @swathichatrapathy1058 6 лет назад +1

      Hi Haseena, this depends on what you do when you're in the city. Do you take pain killers? You can do the same thing on a trek. If you have very painful periods, then it's best to plan your trek when you don't have your periods. You could use a Period Tracker app and see when your periods are likely to come and plan your trek accordingly.
