isn't the background/planet just mode 7 rendering? Same as mario kart plane? Star fox for snes uses super fx chip, i dunno if this game used it. correct me if i'm wrong
Am I the only one who at 0:07 would absolutely cry laughing as a small kid? Something about the music with raphael looking around, then taking off so suddenly to fly to the moon was the funniest thing ever to me.
I just love how chilled and relaxed looks normally… just to turn into a freaking demon when it's angry. I see Raphael as one of those guys that were heart filled fools, but the ones you really don't want to see them angry. Kinda like Ed in _Ed, Edd 'n Eddy_ with a pebble on the shoe.
THIS IS SUCH AN AMAZING BOSS FIGHT. IF ANYONE MANAGED TO RECREATE THIS IN MARIO MAKER THEY'D BE HAILED AS THE BEST MARIO MAKER CREATOR EVER TO HAVE LIVED.
They did! In Unseparate Birdo and Yoshi (2 years Mario maker), Apparently, Raphael the Raven, Wart, Bowser Junior and Kamek team up to separate the two. You go thru some stuff, and at the end, you get to fight the gaint birb... sort off. It's a blue spike top at the bottom of a small planet-ish thing. You, as yoshi in a giant winged boot (to recreate the flutter jump) have to ground-pound the empty chain-chomp pegs. when the peg is gone, you wait until the spike top is at the bottom of the mini planet thing, you ground-pound the same spot. somehow, it kills the blue spike top, and you get the key to procceed to the wart fight. Very complicated.
I always wondered why this intro and the naval pirhana one sounded so different and and fitting to each one respectively. And I think I figured out why. It's because sprite sounds and one of the chords in the intro share the same channel and sprite sounds have priority so they mute that chord, making the note flat. In the pirhana intro it only flattens when pirhana bites after transforming creating a badass intro with a looming "oh shit" silence when the transformation finishes. With raphael the channel is muted at the start because of the flying sound, giving off a suspensefull crecendo highlited by a more distinct drumbeat thanks to the muted chord at the start. And the funny part is that it fits in so damn well on both cases!
My fan theory regarding this battle: This battle doesn't take place on the moon, but on a larger raven ball in the stratosphere (possibly even the upper troposphere) above whatever the Mushroom Kindgon's version of Earth is. Notice how they seem to be above the (mostly cumulus) clouds by a good bit but can still see the details in them, and the castle on the mountaintop is clearly visible. Also, notice that gravity has not changed, larger raven balls allow anyone to run around them while Yoshi's feet are too large for the smaller ones. If they were on the moon, it'd be a normal boss battle with low gravity and "Earth" would look sort of moon-sized in the background. Also, Yoshi and Baby Mario appear to be breathing just fine, so they aren't even above the Armstrong line (the place where the effects on the body are similar to that of outer space). The actual moon is still glowing bright yellow in the sky behind them. Furthermore, this object is much too small, even for just the upper troposphere, to be seen in the sky. It appears to be about 20 feet in diameter. An object that's 20 feet in diameter would cease to be visible at less than a mile in the sky. So, as cool as a space battle would have been, none of the game takes place in outer space.
This is one of my fave Yoshi bosses! The music is so awesome, and the fact that you have to pound a log up his backside- well, if that isn't genius, I don't know what is!
its weird... iv beaten this game a number of times and i always forget what to do in that boss.. its kinda evident here, since i recorded this while i was playing thru the entire game and wanted to put videos on youtube
I remember me and my brother just laughing at this level probably because of the way that Raphael ran around the moon but this was a brilliant level :D
OMG I hope the "sequel" to SMG is Super Yoshi Galaxy. Although of course it could expand the notion of what the 'galaxy' part of it entails... like, massive planets with sprawling forests and jungles and distinct islands on which you can circumnavigate both hemispheres and witness amazing horizons and sunsets etc
This's such an epic fight. It's almost like something out of an action Shonen anime lmao: Raphael charges Yoshi, knocking him off the castle walls so hard he flies into the atmosphere, landing safely on an artificial moon and completely unfazed. Raphael follows suit and once again attacks Yoshi again and again, but Yoshi holds his ground, only further enraging Raphael. Now extremely furious, Raphael starts pounding the moon, emitting vast shockwaves. Yoshi dodges and lands the final blow, knocking Raphael away from the moon at faster-than-light speeds with so much power as to literally burst him into a star. Thus, the Koopa Kingdom awaits! (See what I mean? That's some DBZ shit right there.)
"mommy what's that star for?"
"that one is raphael the raven. he tried to kill a dinosaur and a baby"
Funny shit lmfao
LOL
XDDDDDDDDDDDD
I will tell that story to my child soon.
This boss fight should be used for explaining gravity to flat-earthers.
😁😁😁😂😂
Original Mario Galaxy
So true!
999millon
xddd
Yeah, reminded me of that game.
yes
How music alone makes something so simple, epic.
A dinosaur carrying a baby fighting a giant raven on the moon, there's something you don't see everyday
drogue
According to Mario Galaxy, Yoshi is a space dragon, so it makes sense...Kind of? Nah, never mind. It's still ridiculous.
I always liked this boss battle from a technological standpoint. It's a novel demonstration of the SNES's graphics capabilities.
It's kinda not though, because this game used the Super FX chip to do things the SNES couldn't do on its own.
isn't the background/planet just mode 7 rendering? Same as mario kart plane? Star fox for snes uses super fx chip, i dunno if this game used it. correct me if i'm wrong
@@rovertronic it uses the SFX2 for sprite scaling
@@MeowieGamerIn other words, not for the background rotation effect? That would be even cooler
@@Eyedunnonot really, the SFX2 chip was uses for scaling and poligon rendering and making the game run smoothly

in space, no one can hear you cry
+ Fig Coty xD
+Coty Figue I...I never noticed.
Jesus. That's cool! Like, damn!
+Coty Figue SPAAAAAAAAAAAAACE. We're in space.
HOLY FUCK THAT’S GENIUS
so why yoshi’s bounds sound can hearing
In Yoshi's Island, touching fuzzy is not the only way to get dizzy....

Foreshadowing mario galaxy
True xd

Bro I'm crying as a grown up
Dude same, his derpy face as he just levitates out of the stratosphere is gold

Anyone find this boss cute? The way he waddles when he walks. well... till he gets pissed.
i find him more funny than cute

best 1 out of all of them!
I take my time with this boss solely for the music!
this boss was Super Mario Galaxy, before Super Mario Galaxy, WAS Super Mario Galaxy!
DFV tweet brought me here
look at the description: This boss took longer than expected...
lets goooo
Yoshi galaxy.
this boss fight blew my mind as a child
This should be a level in Smash Bros it'll be the polarizing rainbow road of the game.
DUDE!!!! 🤯🤯🤯
This boss fight was Mario Galaxy before Mario Galaxy was Mario Galaxy

I wonder if baby Mario doesn't cry here because of the "in space, no one can hear you" line...
That’s really neat.
Am I the only one who notices what you're REALLY doing when you damage Raphael? You're hitting him in the balls >>
LordSiravant It could be either o.o
In the original Japan version he blushes.

Interesting
This used to make me feel so sick..all that spinning
This boss took longer then expected...
I love that little detail where you can visually see Raphael get angrier every time you hit them.
Why did you take so long... I aggressively stomp the poles because he will always try to remember the poles that are up and stay on them.
i love how he humps the ground to move
The fucking build up to this boss theme is awesome
Agreed. I got chills the first time I fought him.
3:17 OW man that really hurt Raphael
Right in the cherrys
Love this boss! love the area to play on, love the special theme, this is still epic after so much years ^^
"Nevermore!!!" Quoth Raphael the Raven.
Is it just me or does Raphael the Raven seem like he would've been a good boss in Super Mario Galaxy 2?
If he survived the battle, maybe
My favourite boss for sure. Such an awesome atmosphere (literally and figuratively!).
This battle looks like an early Super Mario Galaxy but with Yoshi
Love that soundtrack :)
0:49 ... and Raphael the Raven never had children
This is my favorite boss in the entire game!!!!
Congratulations?
This is one of my fave Yoshi bosses! The music is so awesome, and the fact that you have to pound a log up his backside- well, if that isn't genius, I don't know what is!
You all know this is when shit just got real
Yoshi fighting on the most is beyond epic
Mario Galaxy inspiration probably, and probably also inspired a boss in 2.
...jump on it's head? Stun it in place, then cross-slam through the moon.
Simple.
-AHMAD
and baby mario was probably saying "again again!"
The intro to this fight goes so hard
How to beat Yoshi: when entering the planet, land on him, not on the complete other side where your vulnerable
GME TO THE MOOOOOOOOOON
And thus Super Mario Galaxy was born.
What a cute giant crow.
Yoshi's Island should have won the award for MOST EPIC FUCKING GAME OF ALL TIME
its weird... iv beaten this game a number of times and i always forget what to do in that boss.. its kinda evident here, since i recorded this while i was playing thru the entire game and wanted to put videos on youtube
Raphael was my favorite boss in this game x3 the music was the best here too
Oh god, i don't remember a single boss in that game that didn't give me trouble. I'll give it a shot.
Time flies , 10 years into the future.
poor boshi he always fights with the great and dangerous bosses...
You predicted boshes channel. His channel pfp is a blue yoshi and his name is bosh.
Trust the process.
Raphael the Raven - When Psyduck goes bad.
You know you can hit him while he's moving, right?
I think he doesn't, or he just wants us to be hateful dunno 😂
I love this game so much
Nostalgia
one of the best bosses of all time!
I love the style of this game.
This boss takes like 30 seconds to beat!
BABY MARIO DONT CRY IN THE SPACE
Thanks. I got the video ready, its just the exporting program I have isnt working all too well so once I fix the problem the video will be up.
I loved this boss!!!
this shit blew my god damn mind when i was a kid :3
So this is where they got the concept for Mario Galaxy, awesome! :D
This boss is one of the many reasons this is the best game ever made
Yoshi proving how gravity works is amazing 🤩
I wonder why baby Mario don't cry in this stage.
I remember playing this at my gameboy way back 2007 haha
And thus the universe was formed.
I said I was Jesus in my summary? I better fix that...
oh my god, the way Yoshi's running on the moon in this boss battle's gonna make me sick...
I chuckled when I saw this
When I first saw Mario Galaxy, this came to my mind immediately.
This was remade into Digga-leg in Super Mario Galaxy 2.
Wow you can ground pound the poles when he is running around..this must be your first time battling this guy
*thumbs up* I'll give it a shot.
The beginning it's so fucking hard 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I remember me and my brother just laughing at this level
probably because of the way that Raphael ran around the moon
but this was a brilliant level :D
raphael taking over mario galaxy in a nutshell
On my life, I thought that was a penguin
JUST HIT THE FUCKING STUMPS ALREADY
The ancestor of Mario Galaxy !
I wonder what made Ravens and moons so common?
Lol Raphael is so cute.
what he flew into pochys planet
OMG I hope the "sequel" to SMG is Super Yoshi Galaxy. this is the concept of the dino pirahna plant.
This is an okay boss. However it can make you dizzy.
When you are in space (nobody can hear you scream).
the precursor to super mario galaxies
im getting dizzy of yoshi run around
Ah one of the 2 only bosses that make full use of the boss music. The other being Navel Piranha.
"Doing the moonwalk with Raphael"

2:00 -- Time for bed.
3:00 -- Happy new year!
3:17 -- Dies of old age
Go for it. I need something new to do anyway. Lol.
