- Beautiful 1951 Toronto TTC Streetcar at Union subway station at the street car entrance.
With a sign on the front and side that read: "The 1951 street car was restored by the proud employees of the TTC"
Sadly I only was able to take it one stop to the Toronto Island Ferry Docks, but was really beautiful to get to take a good look inside!
Felt very sturdy and very classic, they should revert all streetcars back to this stile!
Video taken Sunday June 5th, 2011.
As a kid aged 10 we emigrated to Canada in 1957 and although we only stayed for 3 years I have many vivid memories of a wonderful city and was always riding these fabulous streetcars............Great to see some are kept for posterity.
why did you leave after 3 years?

My all time favorite streetcar design.......aways loved the look of these.
@kaizerzydeco The newer street cars don't have any real issues, they work well but they don't have that classic feel. That sturdiness and calm vibe are lacking in the newer cars. Was a nice treat to get a ride on the 1951 car!
Rode on PCCs in San Francisco, they are quite nice! Glad to see Toronto bring their out from time to time.
Believe it or not, alot of the ones in San Fran are old TTC Cars. I rode them a few years ago in San Fran and they still had plenty of power!
That is really interesting, the fellow I was talking to in their Streetcar museum didn't mention that. They did a good job fixing them up and they were great to ride on. Apparently the transit ridership for them is about 50% tourists and 50% locals/commuters.
Scott Morris Yes. They did a great job of restoring them. Much better than what I remember when it was at the TTC (which was coming up to the end of their useful life with them so I guess investment on them went down). The winter slush, salt, harsher conditions of Toronto also likely made it deteriorate more often.
The ones I rode actually had an advertising sign saying this streetcar was from Toronto which I found very interesting.
The older streetcars in San Fran really do add charm to the city. Charm is something cities generally do not even think about and try to go for the sleekest looking thing which has no charm at all!
at1212 b They had a few tidbits of history on their cars, like where the colour scheme was from, and information about that city and their use of the cars. Apparently the PCCs are restored by a volunteer group and MUNI operates them, which I think is a great system. I can't remember if the volunteers maintain them or MUNI does. Whatever the case they should last many years down there due to the lack of snow, although the air can get salty I imagine.

I rode on this one before going back to Union from Exhibition before they shut down the lines late July. The interior and seat were nice, but the scorching heat radiating underneath the seats to my legs was another story. The lack of A/C didn't help either.
Cleveland Ohio had a fleet of 75 PCC cars. They were sold to Toronto TTC in 1952 where they remained in service until the 1980s.
great history.................... so many ideas come to mind by watching this.
Beautiful tram!
we call it a streetcar in canada

It's sad how the CLRVs are now retired
But not to worry, I believe two of them are staying in Toronto for posterity just like they did with the PCCs which can be rented out for special occassions.
Loud wheels because CLRV in front of PCC was squeaking as it left
This is beautiful
Is this the tightest curve in the system? The streetcar has a minimum curve radius of 36 feet. The flexing could in theory do even tighter curves since it flexes.
This is definitely one of the tightest ones!
Yea it's neat to see the difference between the two vehicles when they're navigating turns. I like to stand in the flex part when I'm riding on then too - makes me feel like I'm surfing, lol.
Is it just me or does that trolley remind me of the 1947 PCC2 trolley that usually runs on Girard avenue in Philadelphia, P.a.?
Yowza! Loud screech
Those old PCC streetcars are gone. They had more "old world" charm than the more recent streetcars do.
Had these in Pittsburgh until the early 90's.. now it's all these digital cars that have GPS and spoken word for all the stops.
Not in these old ones, Toronto is about to start upgrading its fleet of streetcars. The new ones will feature a low floor so you'd be able to get on with scooters, wheelchairs or strollers. But they won't be here until early 2013
They should reserect these old men
Wth , did they have iphone in 1950....such high quality😮
fantastic Joaquim Antunes - São Paulo - Brasil
why is there an old peter witt STILL running in the line?
+DorianTM it's only during the CNE - an 18 day exhibition that happens near the waterfront.
You can also rent them for private functions :)
TOvlogs Thats awesome!
Thankfully Kenosha Wisconsin has 6 old Toronto streetcars. Only one of them is still in Toronto paint
wow....amazing
Why did they use it only 15 years ago like they should’ve retired like 30 years ago but they still have it and also the car was made before the line one even existed
Nice!
RIP TO MY EARS
WHAT?!
All jokes aside - heckin loud! Even lounder in person too! Something about that curve..
