  • It is longer than 8 meters (26 feet), and appears to be harmless, but is it really? What is it? Does it eat people? These questions didn’t seem to bother the divers, who gently swam around it while the creature pulsated and floated beside them. Well, they were right not to fear it. This is not a giant, man-eating worm. This is a pyrosome.

      I think some of them originated from real creatures like these, and maybe The Kraken is actually the Gian Squid

      You're right they've caught 5 giant squid on camera
      One was caught grabbing on a line and breaking it in half with one tentacle that was measured 30 feet
      So sailors from the 1400-1800s weren't lying when they said they saw krakens that took down small boats

    the fact they are colonies instead of single creatures makes them scary IMO. if they were a single creature, the fear level goes down tremendously for some reason.

    The oceanic surface temperature of a bit less than 2°F since 1880 sure helped pyrosomes thrive! Dolphins will have more to eat.

    If pyrosome colonies prevent over-fishing, I'm happy they exist. I hope the pyrosome-boom doesn't lead to the destruction of coral or endangered creatures of any kind, that would be tragic.

      they dont decide, they filter feed and expel water and waste at the same time to propel themselves around. multitasking! i guess they have some senses that guide them to algae and plankton rich spots, or maybe they are just opportunistic feeders, i'll have to learn more

      @@sethyork1164not really. If you have a billion points but each point knows to form a certain angle with its neighbors, it'll form a consistent shape. How does your body know to make your shape? There is no awareness there.

      Bi catch is not a problem here in the states.
      You cannot conflate our standards with those of the likes of the Japanese, the Indians, the vietnamese, Russians, and so on.
      We have the cleanest waters and the most regulations out of any other country on the planet.
      Nothing will ever change unless the other countries hop on board.

      I mean lantern fish exist.
      There so many lantern fish they made a fake “ocean floor” there numbers were so dense in the BILLIONS the sonar thought it was an actual ocean floor at the bottom.
      We could keep fishing them for a while with little changing.
