Magnus: A thousand apologies for not thanking you sooner! (Just life stuff). I cannot thank you enough for the tutorial, if you’re ever in Chicago, the drinks are on me! Thank you! Michael
PS: Just started up another semester at the Old Town School of folk music, the instructor asked the class what we wanted to play, and of course I’m “that” guy pushing for gypsy jazz and naturally the first tune will be.....All of Me! You’re a prince!
Cool Michael! If you want to go deeper I got you covered in my video courses Jazz Comping Guide and Jazz Soloing Guide. Check it out! www.mandolinsecrets.com/academy
I finally got around to putting some time into this video lesson and putting together chords shapes that were easy to put into arpeggios and well, not melody yet, but I’m getting there. What is really interesting to me is the chord shapes and choosing which ones are best for you... Maybe a video topic for Mandolin Secrets?! Loving your videos Magnus! Thanks for the time and commitment you put towards helping us newbies! 🙏🏻🎶💫
Great work Marjorie! Yes, it´s a good topic for a video. As you point out, there´s a lot of options for different shapes and voicings. However I believe you can come a long way using your own ear, and really rely on it. If it´s sounds good to you, you can out your trust in that!
My big take away; “translating the chord structure into a melody”. If there is a way to make it difficult I’ll find it, but that advice right there is such a helpful reminder!
Thanks Kyle! Yes, I´ve changed the setup a little bit to suit my new needs. Glad you like the lighting! Indeed, some barre chords would be a good topic.
Magnus, thanks for being my sensei! You and Tim O'Brian. I am learning mando after 40 years of bass and guitar. Your a huge help and a great resource. You also provide a portal to Nordic culture. I am a Southern California Viking :) . Much appreciated mine venn! Is your axe a Phoenix Neo-classical? I love the aesthetics and sound. I am shopping for my main ride and am open to suggestions. Cheers!
Thanks Horsefinger! Glad to hear that, I´m in very good company with Mr Tim O´Brien. I play a Pheonix Neo Bluegrass, nowaday called standard. I really like it, very smooth and even. I can highly recommend it. Cheers!
Magnus thanks for the video. Two things I want to ask about your course. Is gypsy jazz included? Also many jazz standards are 12 bar blues. Will you have an approach to these songs as well? Thanks.
Thanks for asking Virgil! Yes, for both question! Blues and Gypsy. The Jazz Mandolin Academy is a Step-by-Step video course and in the second Module we´re focusing on dominant chords and play "Groove Elation", a twelve bar blues by John Scofield. In module 4 we cover Turnarounds and play the Django tune "Swing 42" so that an example of some Gypsy Jazz. I think of the course topic as as Acoustic Jazz, and the Gypsy repertoire is part of that. There will also be dripped content with a new song published every month. I´m so excited about it and can´t wait to present it to more players. Detailed info is coming soon!
Thanks for you time to give some of your secrets. Very nice way you have to make dificult things in much easy doing.

Thanks! I´m glad to hear that. I´m always up for a craft beer. :-)

Nice. I am tempted to learn this. Thanks for sharing.
You´re welcome!
Thank you, sounds so good
Thanks Janice!
Great stuff Magnus! The lighting also looks really nice in this video.
Unrelated to this topic, but a video about barre chords would great! For example. Bbmaj7 3355, getting every note to speak or F major 2335 or F#m 2445
