- This is a comparison of the hub noise of 18, 36 and 54 tooth DT Swiss star ratchets in a DT Swiss 240 hub.
Pardon the out of true wheel. It's being trued as we speak. :)
Dude stellar video. Quick and to the point.
Yes and no stupid background music is a major plus
I agree.
Damn that 54 teeth sound is like a chainsaw.. Got my 18T and really like how it is deep, but will consider getting 36/54 teeth some day.
So already got 54 teeth upgrade. Its veeery loud :D
Great video. Keep it up! 👌
Thanks Jonathan, just ordered a 54 after watching this.
Good luck in Carson next weekend! :)
It bugs me that these better ratchets are not standard on such pricey wheels, and to make matters worse its a $109.00 item if you wish to upgrade!! Ludicrous.
Agreed! All high-end wheels should come with this setup.
It pisses me off.
DT Swiss is losing sales because of it.
It would cost almost nothing for them to include the highest engagement and forcing someone to pay an additional $100 plus after spending so much on a wheel set is ridiculous.
Because of it I am choosing to go elsewhere like Hope which is too bad because had they included the higher number their hubs would be a no brainer.
May as well spend a bit more and go I9.
All the spline one wheels come with 36t ratchets.
DT Hubs, yes! DT Rims.... no way.
@@lux-3001 My experience has shown the current rims are good.
Wanna change the sound?
Change the lube thickness
Ps Where can i get replacement decals for my DT 180 hubset that is definitely not a novatec hubset. Thanks
Great video - the difference in sound is very clear indeed !
I have just "upgraded" from 18T to 36T, but feels like there is now more drag when coasting.
Not sure if I am imagining this due to the louder noise.
Have you any thoughts / experience of this ?
Best, Gary
More engagement points mean more drag. You're correct in assuming so. So long as you're pedaling(even just lightly engaging the ratchet) you shouldn't feel any drag.
Some grease will also help with this
Hi. I want to know which is louder? The 36t or the 54t? Thanks
Hi I'm debating doing an upgrade to 54 teeth but on my road bike. It sounds awesome! Does the increased amount of teeth increase drag tho? Are there any other benefits to this upgrade on a road bike besides the sound factor? Thanks!
Upgrading to higher teeth high drag and high engagement
I just got my two new wheelsets in the mail. One with DT Swiss 240 EXP and one with Chris King R45. Both for road. just spinning them around and I was like.. what? I'm used to my mtb wheels being angry hornet on low speed but I guess there aren't much need for frequent engagement when you're doing higher speeds vs out on the trail. The DT website states 36 for my configuration. The note on the Chris King was more angry though, but the DT was very nice as well. A silly thing to think about, but it's the small things that makes the ride more plesant.
I would go for 54t after watching it!
did u notice that the 54t's drag is quite noticeable?
if u crank the pedal and let it spin until it stops,
18t = 90 secs or so
36t = 55 seconds
54t =
the drag doesnt matter as much if the wheel is on a bike w a rider
Really should be pedaling most of the time anyhow if care about speed. I have 36 came on bike has been rock solid 6 years and rim wore out before hub. I think DT has the best ratchet system in the world.
Bret B I hate it when people say "if you care about speed, you should be pedaling anyway". This makes me think these people have never actually ridden in a tight group (on the road) or raced. If your coasting drag is less than others', you will have to pedal less going into a corner to keep up with a pack, you won't have to pedal as hard out of the corner and you won't have to start/stop pedaling as often in a pack on the descents. So freehub drag definitely matters and should be taken very seriously by people planning on riding fast. If you're spending $3000 on a wheel so you get a 3W aero advantage you shouldn't have to compromise on the coasting drag. I also find it hard to believe that a mountain biker wouldn't appreciate less freehub drag on difficult but fast descents.
@@404nobrakes Also, if you are on an endurance ride, that drag adds up.
@@404nobrakes i doubt you will notice the drag form the 54t ratchet while coasting...
Does the sounds change if u put too much grease? Like would be a little quieter if theres more grease?
Yes, the sound will change with different grease.
The more grease the quieter it will be. Be careful though, if you use a thick grease or too much it might make the pawls sluggish & not work well.
I once used some finish line wet lube & that stuff is quite thick/gooey - it was almost silent!
Wait... did you just use the left brake lever to stop the rear wheel? I thought this was America ;)
maybe he also rides motorcycles, right front brake setup on mtb is called moto style.
OMG, 54 is like table saw :P
Yep! Love it :)
Thank you your a life saver 🙏 god bless your soul.
how hard is the upgrade for a low level mechanic? any special tools required? I'm looking to upgrade from 36 to 54
No tools at all robert! All you do is pull the cassette away from the wheel and it will pop off with the freehub. The ratchets will be sitting inside the hub and ready for you to pull out with your fingers and replace.
Sounds like a colony of bees. DT Swiss is workmanship at it's best.
Thanks Georges! Highly appreciated. Greetings from Switzerland : )
Jonathan,
The rear shock you are running has a remote lockout? Is it fully locked out when you engage this?
Kent von severin yes it is! Like a hardtail with no squish at all. It's a Rockshox Monarch XX shock with the XLoc Full Sprint. One plunger locks out both front and rear, and you can adjust how much the front locks out as well.
I hate sound of my dt tricon with. It's probably 18T. That ratchet pulsing sound sounds like it's damaged. But 54T sounds awesome. Like robotic angry bee with buzzsaws.
It matters how it engages, not how it sounds... If it works properly who the fuck cares about the pulsating sound...perhaps the ocd people.
All the 18t have the pulsating sound, there's nothing damaged in yours.
hello, is there any issue of durability of the 54t ratchet compared with the 36t? at the moment I'm running my 240s as they came I guess would be 18t, what would you recommend... greetings
funkos4 there is supposedly a shorter lifespan to the higher tooth ratchets. The teeth are smaller to fit more into the same amount of space. However, I've run 36t ratchets in all of my hubs and I have DT on everything road, cross and XC and have never had a ratchet fail. I'm maybe 5-6 years into the 36t on my XC bike. Use your Google fu and read reports from others.
any wear problems with the 54T? I'm considering the 54T.
with grease, w/out grease, with some grease?
Which is louder and better? 36t or 54t?
If you had to build your own wheels, what criteria would you build to? I'm stuck trying to decide what types spokes I should use (j bend or Straight pull). I've done extensive research and still can't decide.
I would build these exact wheels, but maybe go with a zero drag hub when there are more options out there. J Bend and Straight Pull don't end up having much of a difference at all if the wheel builder is properly skilled. The benefit of J Bend is that you can find a spare in a pinch much easier. ENVE uses J Bend on all of their builds.
AldunateSK go with J-bend. There's no real benefit to straight pull save for aesthetics.
straight pull is difficult for making the length right j-bends are easier
Nice video 😍
I think I need to take apart my wheelsets. I have a road wheelset with 180EXP's and it's super loud, it should be 36t as far as I know, and I have a set of 350's with 36t that are silent in comparison, despite a year of use on my mountain bike (so it can't be grease/freehub oil).
Next year I'm going to upgrade my wheels to DT Swiss and I'm debating if I should build my wheels or buy them as is. The sound of the 240s with the 18t sounds great, and so does the 36t. Might even have 240s in the front and 350 in the rear. The upgrade would be for road, not mtb, srry. What type of wheel is that?
Good to hear! I'd suggest 240s or 180s on the road unless you're a Clydesdale. On the dirt, 350s are bulletproof, but so are the 240s. Haven't had a single issue at 65kg. I'd also recommend going for at least 36t star ratchets. Much better POE.
Dont need to ring my bell anymore just freewheel whahhaha
Nice video from Japan..
I saw three times.
is it the ratchet that's making the hub noise or a combo of the hub and 36t ratchets?
It's inherently a combo of both. The star ratchets are installed in the hub, and the increased tooth count of the ratchets are what causes the different sound.
But which is the loudest? I m using 18 teeth right now but it s very quiet
36T is the best, its on my bike. 54T not as durable.
amstudio have you personally had any durability issues? I've yet to see on in 3 years of running them.
is 36 t louder than 54 t ?
Is it only valid for swiss hubs? I have Axis Elite Disc hub, QR in my tarmac comp disc 2017 in my road bike it's compatible? please help from spain
The One and ONLY HUB is The Dtswiss 350/240s
Thanks! Highly appreciated
That is a dope bike. oval chainring? i wonder how that feels
It's a fad from the late 80-ties. They where default on my new bike those days. It feels ... useless.
Prefer sound of 54T, more like bee sound, nice!
Great !
I have one with 18 ... i go try to change to 54 =)
tnks for the video .
\m/
Sure thing man!
@@bruderrudiger9574 yes
Is the DT Swiss 240s 54t compatible with 3x10 speed? thank you for your answer. godbless
Yes, as long as it has the Shimano body and not an XD body.
Why is the sound not consistent
Hi I´m from Brazil, I want to know what changes if I pass ratchet to 36T or 54T, I only know the sound.
Hey Diego! It also increases the points of engagement (POE). With more teeth to ratchet on, you are able to achieve drivetrain tension with less rotation of the pedals, giving the bike a more precise feel. This really helps in slow speed technical sections when you have to ratchet your pedals over obstacles.
Hi Johnathan thanks for the Video. So how about for someone on a road bike with FFWDF6R allow chincher wheels, whats the real gain. I see u said it helps in slow speed technical sections, I guess this is on MTB.
Mamadou Amadou There isn't a huge gain for road wheels per se, but it is a gain. The more teeth and more points of engagement the less dead space there is in the pedal stroke when you go from coasting to torque.
which one give you more roll time.. ? i. new to these things. i have a road bike.
I'm not sure which would give me more roll time and if the difference would be measurable. I can try to measure that for ya though :)
The real benefit comes in the form of an increased number of points of engagement. For MTB and CX this allows you to ratchet over technical terrain much easier, but it also makes your bike feel more "tight" and well put together. The latter benefit is tough to quantify, but it's definitely real. Translates to road too.
Jonathan Lee what one has the most points of ingagments 18 or 54
Hey Kaleb! The 54 has the most POE.
What stand is that?
Tom Sharpe that's just a basic stand off of Amazon. Not sure it's sold anymore, but the cheap stands will get the job done just fine 👍🏻
18 - 0:06
36 - 0:11
54 - 0:16
54t 350 and I couldn't say a word to my riding partner while coasting. It squeezes out the grease fast, too. Do not recommend.
Hey what driver body are you using? It'll still be loud with a SRAM XD Driver body right??
XD or not won't make any difference
Super video!
No utility on a road bike other than to let other riders or pedestrians know you're around. I actually consider this a safety feature more than anything else.
0:15 feuer frei! Bang! Bang!:D
Only if these people know about the profile elite
Ratchet asmr lol
Moto style brakes.... attaboy.
Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. #onyx
Yang pilih allah like.
54 for the win, 18 for plebs, 36 for fat dudes
Yes we know. They are annoying. All of them.
That's trully horrible...
