As the mother of 3 kids I have a new view. I consider myself progressive, I live in VT, surround myself with diverse friends and co-workers but am realizing I need to do it differently. My husband and I let our kids know that whomever they choose to love in life is perfect and they will always be welcome in our home. Mae pointing out that people shouldn’t have to come out is eye opening for me. I will now rephrase it as bring home anyone you want but don’t feel you have to have this huge revealing about who you are. Just be who you are, live your life, and we already love it! Thank you so much for educating this old chick! I love this podcast, and Fortune, your mom is a true light in this world!❤️
This was a beautiful episode and just solidified why it is my absolute favorite. You three make me feel so much joy and validation. My mom passed before I could muster up enough courage to come out as bisexual and when I told my sister she wasn't entirely supportive so to have this podcast and community to fall back on has been so comforting and life affirming. Thank you for this. And Mae, I am borderline obsessed with you 😂🥰
@@floresalohabakeryso nice that their is a community where you can speak your honest opinions (crushing, drooling, excitement) and to not feel afraid to do so. Thank you for this beautiful podcast/channel and wonderful, wonderful community!!
Tig! That interaction with your aunt brought tears to my eyes. Coming out is painful because even if you have support you know some people in our community won't have that with their family. Big hugs to you all
It's June 26th today - happy birthday to Max and Finn! So many tears throughout this episode. I am used to crying from laughing with these pretty ladies, but today I was so moved - tears of a different kind. My son is trans, and in coming to understand how to support his transition the best I could, I came across an episode of Queer Eye in which Karamo is speaking to a trans woman about this idea of "coming out". He flipped the script, saying isn't it so much more like a "welcoming in" when someone shares with you something so personal about themselves. Ever since hearing that, I think so much about what an honour it is that my son welcomed us in. Thank you so much for this episode and sharing your stories.
I'm literally trying to chug my morning green drink as Fortune is talking about the interaction at the park with her dad 🤣🤣 just glad the drink didn't go everywhere
Crying. My daughter told me she was queer without any worries. We were talking about someone she was dating & how horrible their fam treated them. My daughter knew all I wanted for my kids(and ALL people) is to be respected, loved & happy whatever choices they make. My fave stories are always when they get up nerve & they’re told "duh". Mae’s education to so many people is important. There’s huge misunderstandings & the Right is weaponizing it. Thank You Mae! As you get old you realize how ridiculous fears of being yourself & not fitting in a "box" are. One Life. That’s all you get. Live your best 🏳️🌈🥰
Thank you so much for such a positive message. The world is so ugly right now that reading your comment reminds me there are tons of good people out there who are not often on the spotlight. After consuming the news and feeling so doomed, your comment means a lot.
Ginger is a great example for all of us who have LGBTQA loved ones. For anyone that can't come out right now, Happy Pride and we Handsome fans love you ❤️.
Ginger's reaction to Fortune coming out was a lot like my reaction when my little sister told me she was lesbian. I broke down and cried. Not because I was angry or sad about it. I was just so worried about people being mean to her and her girlfriend. She was still just my little sister in that moment and I felt the need to protect them. I was and still am so happy she was finally able to be true to herself at 35 years old. I can't imagine living with those feelings and not knowing how or when to act on them.
My niece, early 20s at the time, wanted to come out to my mom her grandmother. So she whispered she was afraid to. I asked if she wanted me to help she said ok,Auntie, please. I yelled to my mom, Hey Ma, Joan is gay. She yelled back, I know, and nothing changes!
I'm bingeing Handsome from the beginning again (wearing my "Yeah, Ghost!" merch) cause I can't get enough of you all! Even after multiple listens this episode still makes me cry. I'm so sad we're still in a world (and going back the wrong way) where being yourself and telling people who you are can come with such fear and possible rejection. I'm glad you all have the love and acceptance everyone should know and that you share your stories in such a positive and fantastically comedic way. Love the Handsome! Pretty Little Ally
What a great episode. Thank you for sharing your stories. I have a gay uncle who was closeted for many, many years. All of the family members had always suspected, but he was a c career military man in the 70s and 80s so didn’t have much of a choice professionally. You all gave me some insight to what his life was like before he came out in his late 40s. I wish that he had been able to have the peace you spoke of earlier in his life.
So very grateful to have stumbled onto this amazing podcast. You 3 are absolutely wonderful and loving people! I fell in love and admiration with Fortune while seeing her on Chelsey Lately-her impressions of Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Ivana (sp?) Trump, Brenda and other characters on RUclips shorts, comedy specials, etc. I was introduced to Tig Nataro off of Comedy Central specials and Netflix specials. I love her dry, sarcastic, dark, honest and sweet sense of humor. She reigns supreme on my list of cool, intelligent comedians and I smile every time that I see her!!!! Fortune always makes me laugh, giggle and smile also! Grateful to now have been introduced to May who I found to be very funny, sweet, kind and insightful! The tag line, “Well, it’s official…..” fits him perfectly and is a sweet nod of the head to SNL’s Rachel Dratch (“Debbie Downer”!) If I got your name wrong please forgive me. She’s telling you that she is GAY!” Fortune’s beautiful re-framing of his response to this statement was priceless. Love to all of you connected to this wonderful community and wonderful podcast! ❤❤❤!!
The moment at 11:46 when both Mae and Tig's eyes LIGHT UP with the fairy sparkle (?) sound effect. Tig even stopped in the middle of a sentence! This is why I love these handsome people! 💖
Brilliant and moving ep! Thanks for being vulnerable esp Mae sharing your story of having to have do this twice and the different reactions. My parents were very progressive but stumbled quite a bit then got on board. Funny about trying to be supportive but sounding odd - my dad introduced my wife and I as his daughters, trying to say he saw her like a daughter like family 😅. I was closeted until 29 and life in the closet would have been far worse. This one I literally laughed and cried ♥️🙏😘😘love Ginger saying that a child coming out is an act of love and trust and also sharing how people can get support- I’d rather have my parents be honest with a struggle and work through it than show fake support or none at all 🙏 WHAT A PODCAST!
Fortune: wow you had some really heart-warming words today! The words you shared after your mum answered? Mae commented on them as well - please, somebody make that a TikTok. And then at the end, when you shouted out and appreciated all of us out here? My heart beamed! I share your podcast with a lot of my clients (I’m a psychotherapist), many of whom are queer and trans, or are the parents and sibs of queer and trans folks. I love that the three of you can bring humour and honesty and every-day insights into our lives (I’m of Fortune-ish age myself). I think what you do is so healing for our community/ies. And I am holding a a few folks and their families in my heart, hoping they come across this episode ❤. Keep it Handsome!
I didn't get to see this until July 2nd, but the discussion made this past June my best ever Pride. I lost my entire blood family when I came out. In the 25 odd years since then, I've worked hard for our community. I know that work, along with what y'all do, is making a better world for our children (and grandchildren). Fortune, (happy birthday) we saw you stream from Chris Titus' studio during covid. Great show! Tig, love ya & I miss ST-Discovery so much already. Mae, gonna look up your Netflix tonight. They/them wasn't an option 26 years ago, but it feels like it fits this 70 yr old pretty well now. Keep up the fantastic work & stay Handsome! 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ Happy Pride

Definitely one of my favorite episodes. So touching to hear and share in your coming out stories. You're three sweet pretty little ladies, and Ginger is a doll.
❤ I listened to this episode on a KS to MA drive with my mom - who had some difficulty when I came out. It was a beautiful way to share how I feel about that part of our relationship. Thank you all & especially thank you to Ginger for sharing your experience as a mom!
Loved this so much , I’ve just re-watched. Ginger is amazing ! Some of her initial fears to Fortune coming out were similar to my mum’s worries too. Thankfully once my mum got over the shock she was incredibly supportive. ❤

I love when Fortune talks about FUBAR! She plays my favorite character on that show. I've watched the series all the way through twice so far. Once before listening to Handsome and once since I've started listening/watching Handsome and getting to hear Fortune make mentions of it. I love Fortune so much! I love her singing, her comedy, and her actioning. She's a force to be reckoned with.
Not everyone has a supportive family and some take time to warm up to the idea but the freedom and individual feels when they stop living for others and live for themselves is exactly why coming out is so pivotal for the LGBTQ+ community! We are free spirited, we are unique, we are simply and unapologetically ourselves and that aspect is brought into this podcast. How can you not love this!? Much love for the handsome pod and the message you share!
I love the Handsome Pod. When my son was growing up I always said “person” when I would speak of if he in the future chose to spend his life or time with another human because I could not stand the thought of one day if he needed to come out to me, he might doubt I would be accepting.
I’m so glad we finally got to hear from Fortune’s mom!! I had to come out to my mom about not being straight and not being a Christian. She’s definitely less understanding of my sexuality than my being an atheist. I remember at one point when I was growing up she said that she thought it was something I was just saying to get attention.
Wow! Fortune, the way you described your mothers group standing with signs of love blocking your view from the haters and their hate signs. One of my favorite moments on any podcast. When people say I'm not gay but I'm an ally. That is what that should mean. Allies stand strong and protecting from the hate!! Love it❤
Thank you for sharing your experience with us. You are all surrounded by healthy loving relationships. Congratulations to you and your families. Love your podcast and loved Ginger!
Love love love all of you !! Thank you for being REAL ❤ my husband and I have become closer to our daughter and her girlfriend because of y’all - thanks !!!! Not sure why but it is really tough to get support from our “ friends” yep even the church goers that love “everyone” sending love and encouragement from Sugar Land TX
“it’s not what i wanted.” 😂 Mae- i think everyone can relate to the birthday sadness. we deny for months we don’t want to do anything and when no one does anything we’re sad. 😅
I loved hearing all of your coming out stories & I’m happy that y’all had positive outcomes. I really hope that someday there will be no “coming out” necessary for anybody…because there won’t be any expectations on anyone’s identity & there won’t be a need for fear of rejection or hate.
I turned 40 just days after my father's funeral so I was around my family for that day. Usually there is half a continent and an ocean between me and them. My family tried to throw me a party. In true, tone-deaf and tasteless manner, there were black balloons and tombstone 'over the hill' themed gifts.

Coming out once was HARD ENOUGH! Dude! Talk about drawing the short straw! 😶 God love you.😊❤

Absolutely 💯

this episode was so heartwarming. Thanks for sharing!
“it’s not what i wanted.” 😂 Mae- i think everyone can relate to the birthday sadness. we deny for months we don’t want to do anything and when no one does anything we’re sad. 😅
Great episode! Love your mom Fortune!
Thank you for sharing your stories with us! 🧡🧡🧡
OMG Fortune's mom is adorable
Excellent episode, y'all!💜
I loved hearing all of your coming out stories & I’m happy that y’all had positive outcomes. I really hope that someday there will be no “coming out” necessary for anybody…because there won’t be any expectations on anyone’s identity & there won’t be a need for fear of rejection or hate.
Thank you for this conversation.
very funny and heartfelt ❤
Want to go to their show n Toronto!!!!! Listening n watching n Texas . great question.
I turned 40 just days after my father's funeral so I was around my family for that day. Usually there is half a continent and an ocean between me and them. My family tried to throw me a party. In true, tone-deaf and tasteless manner, there were black balloons and tombstone 'over the hill' themed gifts.
Great session to watch - I learn so much from personal stories of how others came out
Loved Am I Ok! Watched it with my daughter.
The sound effect after Tig mentions the plane analogy… 😂
Fortune had that cake with the Norman Lear on the Kelly Clarkson show! How could she forget that?!! 😂😂
Not beating around the bush Fortune. 🤣
