I made a home made Gem also. I think the concept you are missing is the counter weight. On the end instead of using a light ball you need something heavier. I utilized 15 washers for the counter weight. Works great and helps with path and release. There are some good DIY videos on the Gem. I agree the original product is expensive.
I have the GEM. Yes you can make a homemade version and there are videos out there showing how. This one with PVC and a foam toy would not be similar at all. The extra weight plays a big part. For example, the weight helps avoid lead wrist extension at P4. It’s not supposed to be a visual aid at P4 as suggested in the video, but instead a feel aid. There are plenty of ways to spend money on golf training aids and wouldn’t making a legit DIY version but I think it’s a quality and helpful tool. Would be good for MSG to revisit this one in fairness.
I bought the GEM. It works!. dont hit balls with it on..10-15 practice swings then take the length of pipe off and hit a few balls. It is great for getting on the correct swing path and also gets me keeping my weight forward. Pls make a video using the original GEM.
Not quite the idea, but a good effort Matt. I love that you are willing to call these devices out for their outrageous prices, and show how simply and cheaply they can be DIYed. I enjoy making my own training aids, and have saved hundreds of $s. As many have mentioned, the GEM isn't a visual aid but a weight/balance device to train a 'feel'. Be Better Golf did a review and demo of the OG GEM and explains the use and concept pretty well. Anyone wanting to try and make one should watch that to understand the real purpose.
I own the GEM, I like it. You are close but need to add some weight to the end vs a foam toy. It’s a counter balance. The ball weighs 128g (just weight it on the food scale). Also you are only supposed to take half swings with the longer extension, and not hit balls. Can take half swings to longer swings with the 4-5” inch extension and hit balls. Also, might need to get a steel extension as the pvc might wobble with the counter weight.
I love the effort to make your own. I always enjoy your videos and appreciate the fact that you don’t always take yourself and/or the subject matter too seriously.
I did the exact same thing. Went to home depot and spend some time looking at different options and then a found the easiest way to do it. I bought a small wrench that can be clamped shut and attached it to my club and it worked. $8... Was shocked as well when I saw the gem for $140. Couldn't believe that priced it that high.
You need to use a ground clamp with threaded rod and a threaded rod coupler with a bolt on the end and washers. Longer bolt for more weight and shorter for less weight.
Normally I like your videos. In this case you didn’t do your home work. What you built is nothing like the GEM and will not provide the benefit of the GEM. There are RUclips videos out there that clearly explain how the GEM works and what it does. Additionally there are also plenty of “how to” videos providing guidance as to making a cheap version using all thread, washers and a grounding clamp. The key to the GEM device is to counter balance the club so you can feel how the club wants to move during the golf swing. It is pretty clear you didn’t put any research as to what the GEM does and how it does it into this project. And yes, the real dead GEM is too expensive.
That was well said. It would be nice if he responded to you or any of the others about this mistake. He is leaving everyone hanging. Make your money on RUclips, but do it the right way.
Normally really enjoy your content but this one irked quite a bit. I use the GEM and it is hands down the most effective training aid I've ever used. It just grooves the right feeling to get on plane & helps sync up the arms and body. When my swing is off; 30 mins on the range with the GEM is a quick fix. Now to your home made contraption. a.) you don't hit shots with the GEM in place. You make 10 half swings with it to groove muscle memory & then hit a shot with another iron. Rinse and repeat until you've exhausted your basket of balls. And b.) the key is the counterbalance weight of the ball. It will perfectly balance the club on your finger. Sticking the plastic ball you used doesn't achieve a perfect counterbalance. This is where the GEM will shudder if you are trying to manipulate the face so you learn to takeaway the club on plane and lose the shudder. At $140, it is a bit expensive but it is cheaper than a couple of lessons with a pro and it is perfect for seeding the right feels. It also comes with a lot of drills and content so I think it is realy value for money relative to the results and effectiveness of the tool
Yes, I made one with 1/2 pipe hanger, 1/4" all thread, 2 1/4-20 nuts and washers. Weight should be down vertical at club parallel on both the back swing and fore swing.
I love your diy training aids. I made a few of the ones you did years ago. Plenty of items out there that can be made into a training aid of some description. Awesome.
We kindly got donated this training aid from DJ Russell himself here in West Wales, great to learn how to realise the golf club, this worked great with new golfers as a basis. The different weights that can be adjusted can also help the more experienced golfers. Great piece of kit 👍🏻
I reviewed the GEM on my channel and initially liked it, but over time the device caused a left going further left ball flight (pull hook). Also you don’t hit balls with the GEM, it’s just for practice swings. If you are a slicer, maybe worth a look.
I bought the gem also. I agree it is overpriced. I didnt try to hit balls with it, though the kit has a smaller bar to attach to do that. I also had trouble getting the clamp to stay on the grip. sort of makes sense in that rubber or leather and metal clamp are just going to not be snug enough, no matter how tight, it will eventually loosen up. hi handicapper and could only stop the wobble by doing a slow swing. it taught me that the arms and torso/chest need to be sync together in the full swing, any deviation from that started to wobble. also showed me that in my takeaway/backswing,if shaft rotates even slightly from square, the club face will not impact ball like at address, and ball flight will suffer. John
I have the GEM, you’re not supposed to to hit balls with long rod on it. They say you can use the short rod to hit half swings. I found I didn’t do that well with it. I prefer the George Gankus training aids they work pretty well for my swing. Good luck with you home made one and thanks
I made a homemade Golfforever bar (retail $200), using a 1 1/4" wood dowel rod, closed end wood screw eye bolt and a carbiner. Not a perfect match, but it cost less than $15. I already had the resistance bands. Only drawback is you should wear gloves when using it.
I made one about a year ago but I used washers on the end……but it’s not to hit balls with….your suppose to swing the club 10 times w/o a ball nonstop…..then hit your regular hitting club…..it teachers you muscle memory…….try that.
Good device, I think it would be better with a small plastic jar filled with water instead of football, if interested I have developed a training device that puts you in the exact position in 6 stages of swing without even thinking about it, it will give a complete novice a pro swing in 10 min, only problem I have is how to take it to the next stage? Any ideas?
You need the weight of the steel ball for it to work right. The foam football doesn’t do it. It’s not a visual aid, the weight actually opens and closes the face.
Like most of the gimmicks out there, it is over priced. More so than helping your swing it's much better at making the product owner rich. Golf seems to be the land of opportunity for people to make money. I'm going with lessons and a lot of practice is still the best thing for your swing.
the GEM is legit and works. I am a low single figure & I swear by it. I use it whenever I feel my swing getting a bit ragged or loose and it gets me back on the right feels in no time
i think you could make a better version for even cheaper with a split ring hanger or a pipe clamp with a 3/8 threaded rod and some nuts/washers on the end for the weight.
I think he nailed it early on in the use. Toe up at waist level is not great… that’s open, not square. Now you need rotation to fix it. Just how I see it.
first one to make a mobile sand bunker wins! its the only shot no one can practice at home today. without having to dig a hole and put sand in it how can we recreate a bunker shot at home? i already tried the cat litter box method.... its flawed XD
The device isn't for visual aid it's a counterweight to the clubface. Why anyone would want to counterweight the clubface is beyond me. The weight of the clubface is essential to how a golf club works, negating that will only confuse your mind and muscles.
I really like my GEM, when put in daily training swings , it works very well. My problem is I use it daily and play a couple really good rounds, then don't use it for awhile, because I got it. Nope then I have a horrible round, and then remember to use it daily. Plus, I wouldn't be caught dead with that ridiculously hideous D.I.Y crap on any respectable golf range. Just saying that isn't me. Plus, Mr. Fraser deserves to get paid for his invention, seems like a really nice man. On a side note, my golf buddy spent about $1,000 on private lessons now compare that to my $140 and the results. To put it nicely my $140 investment was the way to go.
Have the Gem No it did nothing for me probably didn’t give it enough time, it’s built very sturdy probably weighs a bit more that short games home made device
FYI you're not supposed hit balls w the GEM. The GEM is an amazing training tool. It's well built but definitely overpriced. I'm sure the cost to build a product at small scale must be very high. I tried to make my own at home depot and ultimately bought the real product and am happy I did.
Have you tried DIY’ing the ProSendr or Greg Norman’s “Secret” wrist device? For $200, it seems that the ProSendr can be made for less $20. What do you or your subscribers think?
I think you owe your dog a big apology and a replacement football toy thingy lol. As for GEM, you may have just put them out of business on the low low. hahaha I may try this myself if I get bored this winter. Thanks for sharing. Reading the comments looks like a lot of ppl bought this thing so you may be forced to buy it now.
Not going to put them out of business but may prevent people from buying that the product would help. What he has created will not do what the GEM does. The GEM counter balances the club and forces it in positions so that you can feel it throughout the swing.
I think something this video highlights is recognizing the work of hustlers. In my opinion if the best players in the world don't use it, there's no point in using it. They are playing for a living and looking for any possible advantage they can get. They have every possible training aid at their disposal if they use it, there is some merit to it
@scrout nah...disagree with that. They put their pants on 1 leg at a time, just like everyone else. At 1 time they couldn't break 100 either. They learned to dig it out of the dirt, so can you
You really didn’t do your homework on the device, one it is a weighted device which will expose your Club face and make the wobble extreme. Also, it is not designed to hit anything with it is made as a swing trainer, not a hitting aid.
You Missed The Whole Point of the Training Aid. Do some research, then do a follow up video. Hint: This is not for visual training; It Is a Counterweight. Sorry, No Thumbs Up on this one. For me this device is counterproductive; I try to rotate my body through to finish while Jon Rahming my wrist position at impact.
That much forearm rotation, and face rotation is “a way” to play golf. However…. I’m like you. I don’t prefer it. I don’t like that much upward cock of the wrists either. Creates a huge cup in the left wrist. Love your channel, bro.
i have the real thing, used it a bit but i think it's a gimmick. it doesn't really help me because i play with a fairly strong grip and a bit shut. it's good if you like rolling the face open and closed in your swing but not if you like a more stable face with a good pivot which is what i strive for. why did i buy it? i'm a sucker.
Matt, it's coming close to hitting your inner thigh. The white PVC pipe needs to be a little shorter. I'd hate to see what marks it leaves in those fancy grips you have. Personally I don't believe this device would help my swing.
Fan of the channel and I love a good DIY version of an expensive training aid but this one is miles off. The GEM is expensive but the whole point is to have a heavy counterweight. A foam dog toy isn't even close.
Ok, surely you’ve realized by now that you missed the point of the training aid. I’m a fan of your channel, not trying to be a jerk here. I wouldn’t spend the time or money you did to make your knock off. I made a GEM about a year ago with stuff around the house (zip tied an 8 in adjustable wrench to an old club then braced it with a plastic toy cube, some cardboard and a bunch of duct tape; also added coins to the end in the wrench for weighting). I’m not sure how close mine is to the actual GEM, but it balances toe up near the middle of the club, and more importantly it does feel different (beyond just being obviously heavier) during swings. I’d love to try the real one, but won’t spend that much for it. It does work/do something (because of the feel). I’d say it’s more of an old school toe up to toe up release pattern, but I like it. PING has done research on how much elite players rotate the club face during the swing and there was quite a bit of variability, which didn’t correlate to how accurate a player was- with regard to this, it seems there are various ways to swing a club. Other aspects of the swing seem to have smaller windows for variance, ref the AMG guys and all their data. Matt, you should totally get a lesson from them- you’d get a ton of views, and you’d get better.
You are way off on this one. Totally missed the boat. The GEM is a good aid that works well. Don’t hit balls with it. Not a visual aid. You need it to be more robust than what you built because the rod needs weight at the end. The weight actually helps manipulate the club face. What you built probably does nothing.
You don’t hit balls either the gem trainer. For anyone’s time that is worth more then $50 an hour, building this yourself from Home Depot parts seems pointless. Gem also has a money back guarantee so buy it and if you don’t like it send it back. I bought one, used it for a couple weeks and sent it back as I didn’t see the difference after using it for 2 weeks straight.
Anyone else think gem stole the idea from an and called Duffix? The Duffix came out in 2001 and flopped. But it was the gem for sure Did they take the idea from Duffix?
It needs to have weight at the end of the rod. You didn't even make the DIY version correctly. I dont think you actually researched the GEM and how it works
Given all the people who have let you know that you have misconstrued the concept behind this training aid, I’d think you’d pull this video and make a more accurate version. Your take on actual concept would be welcome. The info is all over the web, including how to make one with the correct length and weight. I generally like your stuff, but this is not your best effort.
The TOE UP is misrepresentation! TOE up TO WHAT? IF you stand straight up and put the club in front of you the toe up would be good, but you are bent over to the ball because it is on the ground, so I CONCLUDE that YOU>MrShortGame are correct in that the toe up is in relationship to your spine as you are bent over!
I made a home made Gem also. I think the concept you are missing is the counter weight. On the end instead of using a light ball you need something heavier. I utilized 15 washers for the counter weight. Works great and helps with path and release. There are some good DIY videos on the Gem. I agree the original product is expensive.

That's exactly why it wasn't a good effort. He did Zero research on reviews and possible DYI.
My understanding is that the weight on the end is the key to this thing. I could be wrong.
I own the GEM, I like it. You are close but need to add some weight to the end vs a foam toy. It’s a counter balance. The ball weighs 128g (just weight it on the food scale). When you first put the ball on the pipe it is the biggest smile I have ever seen in your videos. Haha😂. Love it.
I love the effort to make your own. I always enjoy your videos and appreciate the fact that you don’t always take yourself and/or the subject matter too seriously.
100% this. This weight of the device is a major factor in helping this device working as designed. I made one but used all metal. Worked ok.
I enjoyed your enthusiasm during the assembly process. I hope your dog gets his toy back!

Yep! That’s how I made mine.

Hey ! not only have I saved 140 dollars I have saved 20 dollars as well because watching you struggle with this thing I won't bother.
He completely misrepresented the thing and has no idea how it works.
I like making things over buying them but wonder if the one in the add is metal does the weight of it make a difference?
Of course it does. He represented the GEM terribly.
You can use some locktite on the threads to secure the valve to the clamp.
I love your diy training aids. I made a few of the ones you did years ago. Plenty of items out there that can be made into a training aid of some description. Awesome.

Great video for guys that like to tinker with their own golf stuff. I’ll definitely try it.
Just use 1/4” all-thread and a stack of washers. Double nut the bottom and it’s good to go. Made mine in about 5 minutes.
Isn't the point of the ball on the gem to be a counter weight? A foam ball isn't doing anything.
The GEM is a counter weight so I don't see how this homemade version compares.
I built set of those swing sticks with the different weights at the end. The are designed to speed up your swing. Saved $200.
I used yout video to get by brother in law a gift. Saved me time, thanks.
John
Brilliant!! As a self described 'cheapskate' golfer (4 clubs in the bag from Goodwill) I absolutely ❤ this swing trainer!!
I have the GEM, you’re not supposed to to hit balls with long rod on it. They say you can use the short rod to hit half swings. I found I didn’t do that well with it. I prefer the George Gankus training aids they work pretty well for my swing. Good luck with you home made one and thanks
I think there’s a weight to keep the in to out path it weighs the club down into the swing plane promoting an in to out path.
Made one with $14 of Home Depot Screw, clamp, wing nuts and washers for weight. Works well.
I made a homemade Golfforever bar (retail $200), using a 1 1/4" wood dowel rod, closed end wood screw eye bolt and a carbiner. Not a perfect match, but it cost less than $15. I already had the resistance bands. Only drawback is you should wear gloves when using it.
Hi MrShortGame, how close are you to review the "Garden City Golf Club" in New York?
I saw Steve Johnson review the Jem. He loved it but said the weight was what made you turn your wrists.
I made one with washers ,it works I love it save me some $$$ ..
I made one about a year ago but I used washers on the end……but it’s not to hit balls with….your suppose to swing the club 10 times w/o a ball nonstop…..then hit your regular hitting club…..it teachers you muscle memory…….try that.
Yeah the website said not to hit balls with it. Now with that said, great idea to DIY one. This is something I will try.
I made one using and electrical grounding clamp, a 1/4" threaded rod and a bunch of washers held in place with 1/4" nuts. Cost about $15
How long is the rod you used ?
Can you make a super speed set up as well? Great video!!
Good device, I think it would be better with a small plastic jar filled with water instead of football, if interested I have developed a training device that puts you in the exact position in 6 stages of swing without even thinking about it, it will give a complete novice a pro swing in 10 min, only problem I have is how to take it to the next stage? You need the weight of the steel ball for it to work right. The foam football doesn’t do it. It’s not a visual aid, the weight actually opens and closes the face.
I made one and i do like the feel in the take away and down swing. Spent under 12$
I bought one your version is not even close the gem really works
Can you do a DIY Impact Snap ?
Like most of the gimmicks out there, it is over priced. More so than helping your swing it's much better at making the product owner rich. Golf seems to be the land of opportunity for people to make money. I'm going with lessons and a lot of practice is still the best thing for your swing.

I think he nailed it early on in the use.
Toe up at waist level is not great… that’s open, not square.
Now you need rotation to fix it.
Just how I see it.
Your not meant to hit the ball using the GEM ..I got the original GEM and my handicap has dropped from 4 to 1.4 in one year
first one to make a mobile sand bunker wins! its the only shot no one can practice at home today. without having to dig a hole and put sand in it how can we recreate a bunker shot at home? i already tried the cat litter box method.... its flawed XD
Great item😊

I used copper tubing instead of plastic. Also, I used a tennis ball.
Have the Gem No it did nothing for me probably didn’t give it enough time, it’s built very sturdy probably weighs a bit more that short games home made device
Nice , good see we are not getting ripped off
FYI you're not supposed hit balls w the GEM.

Geez, MSG, your silence in the face of MANY of the comments is deafening.
I think you owe your dog a big apology and a replacement football toy thingy lol. As for GEM, you may have just put them out of business on the low low. hahaha I may try this myself if I get bored this winter. Thanks for sharing. Not going to put them out of business but may prevent people from buying that the product would help. What he has created will not do what the GEM does. The GEM counter balances the club and forces it in positions so that you can feel it throughout the swing.

its the wight that puts you in positions you need a metal rod and a weighted ball
I made one, for $9 using washers
Missed the point as others have said. It’s a counter weight thing.
You really didn’t do your homework on the device, one it is a weighted device which will expose your Club face and make the wobble extreme. Also, it is not designed to hit anything with it is made as a swing trainer, not a hitting aid.

For me this device is counterproductive; I try to rotate my body through to finish while Jon Rahming my wrist position at impact.
Alvin called, he wants his royalty checks forwarded to his nursing home.
The original maker has to charge $140 so they can build up a fund to settle lawsuits for kneecap replacement of their customers.😂
That’s hilarious 😂
Did you say... "moment of "Truce"" ?... 😂
That much forearm rotation, and face rotation is “a way” to play golf. However…. I’m like you. I don’t prefer it. I don’t like that much upward cock of the wrists either. Creates a huge cup in the left wrist. Love your channel, bro.
🎉could some one post the exact components from Home Depot. I am not a handy guy..
Migmatis golf poor man’s gem. Using a 1/2” ground clamp.
I’ve spent a lot of time and money at the range but did learn that a cupped left wrist especially in the back swing, is death to your golf game. 😢
i have the real thing, used it a bit but i think it's a gimmick. it doesn't really help me because i play with a fairly strong grip and a bit shut. it's good if you like rolling the face open and closed in your swing but not if you like a more stable face with a good pivot which is what i strive for. why did i buy it? i'm a sucker.
Matt, it's coming close to hitting your inner thigh. The white PVC pipe needs to be a little shorter. I'd hate to see what marks it leaves in those fancy grips you have. Personally I don't believe this device would help my swing.
It has a weighted steel ball on the end of rod you missed the hole idea of the training aid!!!!!!!😏🤔
What’s your thoughts on the “ hanger” golf trainer? $100.00
Try making a diy for that item
Buy a plastic hanger
Missed the point *completely*. It works as a counterbalance.
Its not a visual aid its a heavy counter balance, better of just clamping a havy mole wrench onto an old club
You are way off on this one. Totally missed the boat. The GEM is a good aid that works well. Don’t hit balls with it. Not a visual aid. You need it to be more robust than what you built because the rod needs weight at the end. The weight actually helps manipulate the club face. What you built probably does nothing.
Did us dirty on this one, and isn't even bothering to acknowledge comments like yours and others.
Next video. Part 2, perfect your version. Part 3, but the actually training aid and compare. 🤷🏻♂️
Love it! But... not for me 😂
I see a cease and desist in your future. 😅😅😅😅
The weight of the gem is the most important part. Don't have one but seems like the obvious attribute to the product. Yours is too light. Just saying.
Yes this is representation is ignorant.
Thanks for putting the video together. Looks like a Waste of Money even under $20.
I would say that $150 unit is total price gouging.
I’ve the GEM, you are using the training aid wrong, go to the u-tube and see how to use the 3 bars
But it was the gem for sure
Did they take the idea from Duffix?
It needs to have weight at the end of the rod. You didn't even make the DIY version correctly.
I dont think you actually researched the GEM and how it works
I just saved myself 150 bucks
Like most things in golf today ...grossly over priced....made one for under £5.00
I like your vids, but feel like you really didn’t research the product you were attempting to copy? Kind of a waste of time I think.
