    Rob Lowe has risen to the highest highs and the lowest of lows (which he discusses here). Still, he remains an incredibly articulate, thoughtful FANTASTIC actor!!! His performance in Behind the Candelabra? Brilliantly hilarious!! His performance on Parks and Rec? Magical! Good on this man!

    I was listening to this and I really don't think he did that bad. The person who did snow white hurt my ears more than he did.

    Thanks to a friend on the production team, I was at the rehearsals that year for this Oscars. They rehearsed over two days and I was there all day each day with my friend Rick, sitting in whatever empty seats we wanted, watching them rehearse. When Rick and I first heard the number in rehearsal we looked at each other with wide eyes and mouths open, stunned. They think this is GOOD? But believe it or not as we hears it again, and again, and again - they rehearsed it a LOT - we actually started to get into it. Rob would start singing Proud Mary live, but fairly quickly it switched over to a pre-recorded track that Rob had made earlier, and you hear his voice get much stronger. Another tidbit: Originally, young Mayim Bialik (who was fresh off the movie Beaches) and the Nicholas Brothers were supposed to be in the segment, but got cut for time. During a break, I asked Rob Lowe, who was walking past me, if he would pose for a photo with me, and good old Midwestern-born Rob who can't say no (as he states in this video) said.... no. But the next evening, at the Governor's Ball after the telecast, I asked again, and perhaps recognizing me from rehearsal this time he said yes: www.flickr.com/photos/alan-light/2072029574

    I mean it was pain to the ears but wasn't that ridiculous as to the amount of flak it received, I thing it's just the fact that what a circus they made of the Oscars in 89

    I just watched the opening they're talking about tonight, and I was honestly amazed at how well Rob Lowe actually did the song. He was on key, he picked up a little growly thing near the end that he did, and he was really quite good. And this was the 80's and I can't understand why nobody liked this. It was pure 'camp' and even now, who doesn't like a little camp once in awhile? And the girl who did Snow White was good as well. This appearance however, pretty much ostracized her from working in Hollywood. She had a successful career in Las Vegas though and still managed to get other stage work. Just not much in Hollywood. When she sang one on one to members of the audience, she had been told to do this and it was part of her opening rendition of the number. Apparently it wasn't appreciated by the actors she singled out at all.

    • @RaymondHng
      @RaymondHng 2 года назад

      Producer Allan Carr hired playwright Steve Silver to co-produce the opening number inspired by Silver's long-running San Francisco musical revue _Beach Blanket Babylon_ . What works in San Francisco may not necessarily translate well to Hollywood or New York City. (See the Cockettes.) Hollywood and the Academy did not want to be associated with camp because they feel that camp equals amateur. Seventeen people, including actors Paul Newman, Gregory Peck, and Julie Andrews, and directors Billy Wilder and Joseph L. Mankiewicz, signed an open letter deriding the Oscar telecast as "an embarrassment to both the Academy and the entire motion picture industry".

    • @blackmore4
      @blackmore4 2 года назад +2

      Seems like homophobic bullshit to me. I agree that while the number wasn't amazing, it was certainly no worse than many others and, as you say, both Lowe and the Snow White actress performed well.

    • @judylee4649
      @judylee4649 2 года назад +1

      @@RaymondHng I find it hard to believe Julie Andrew's found camp a problem when Robert Preston's whole performsnce in Victor /Victoria, was nothing but. Also Leslie Ann Warren was over the top in camp as the ditzy showgirl. The whole criticism was like not really warrented to the extent it was. Especially when it harkened back to the Era of great musicals movie makers came up with into the early 50's.

  • @jedijones

    The worst part of the number is that it seems to be over at one point, and the singing stops, then suddenly it starts up again and goes on for 5 more minutes. That was too much pain for audiences to bear.

    You can find the footage of the Oscars opening on RUclips. It's honestly not that bad! It is a bit cheesy but not awful. Rob Lowe is hardly even in it. The poor Snow White actress is in the majority of the Oscars opening...and her name wasn't splashed in the papers!

      @ Angel Patti, I agree. Yeah, though all the rest was did their job, whoever cast her or told her to use that voice messed up. Those shows go over the top, so big deal, what, have someone come out and walk straight to the mike and get down to just handing out the Oscars? That and all these other shows now like AI, The Voice, the show handing out roses...geez, I'll take over the top openings any day. And the whole thing is about Hollywood and older actors were acknowledged. I think there is more to it then this just being a 3 ring circus. There's a video with the title, the 11 mins that "RUINED" Alan Carr's Career. ??

  • @simonboccanegra3811
    @simonboccanegra3811 2 года назад

    One of Carr's other ideas was to do way with the tradition of Best Song performances. So, you know, nuts to nominated pros like Carly Simon and Phil Collins -- we'll use the saved time for 12 minutes of Snow White/Merv Griffin/Rob Lowe and then another 12 minutes of caterwauling, dancing, and FENCING by 19 "Oscar winners of the future." (Admittedly, Ricki Lake sang very well, and Tracy Nelson was a great dancer. But a lot of what was around them in that up-and-comers number was abysmal.)

    • @jedijones

      And no one would ever call it appropriation that Ike and Tina did a cover version of a white band's song. Because that's a term only used for the purposes of slurring white people.

    So "boo-freakin-hoo" on him making that bad Oscar list. Screw that 'Midwesterner-nice-guy' excuse for accepting the gig. No one twisted his arm. He knew what he was getting into before he sang the first note w/Snow. @Cindy Tartt Lowe switched from Democrat to Independent since 2006. From the December 17, 2006 issue of _The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette_ .: "I'm a registered Independent now. I'll tell you what, there were two things. I grew up, had a family and had children, which will, I think, change who you are on all levels, not just politically. The other part was, I just don't like partisan politics of any stripe anymore. I think both parties have been co-opted by the fringe of each party. I'm a centrist. Look at what happened to Joe Lieberman. Joe Lieberman gave his life to the Democratic Party. He lost the primary, and if he had listened to his leaders the people of the state would not have been able to elect him. So I think that there is a big place in American politics now for independent thinkers."
