I REALLY see how Amy Winehouse learned from Dinah Washington... The phrasing, the breath.... just stunning. A Legend learning from a Legend. RIP to both of these songbirds.
Winehouse always claimed Washington as an influencer. Not doubt Dinah was. But to my ear, Amy Winehouse is not a Washington-type singer. Winehouse is a combination of Billie Holiday and the late Tiny Turner.
I was just getting ready to say that. I read a bio on her and she considered herself ugly and fat. its been a minute since I read it so i dont remember all the details. The problem was that during that time darker skin was shunned, especially in the entertainment business. Lena Horne and Dorothy Dandridge and anyone or anything else light skinned was "ideal" at the time and and I guess it made Ms. Washington insecure.
Her dramatic weight loss, which to my knowledge she achieved with diet pills, also wrecked her voice. There is a clear distinction between her voice pre-weight loss and her voice post-weight loss.
direfranchement Personally I think she sounds slightly inebriated on certain recordings. Ex: Cry Me A River, Don’t Go To Strangers, Invitation, Somewhere Along The Line, and Unforgettable .
Because she came up before the black is beautiful campaign in the USA. Even today in most places outside of the states black skin and overweight is considered ugly. Black Americans did a lot of work to lift the conscious of the nation.
Her voice is amazingly CLEAR and CRISP. AshleySaysSo brought DWashington to me. And I love her. Hate that I’m just now learning of her but I’m happy to know now at least.
I love that song and the singer even more so. She had a sweet-roll of a voice that was seasoned with pepper jack cheese. Washington's beautiful phrasing was (and is) the best in the business.
Billie Holiday too. She wasn't a classically trained singer, but she possessed a unique voice that sounded like the instrumentation that played behind her. Her phrasing was was awesome. It's heartbreaking that she fell into that dark hole of addiction and abuse and her beautiful light was turned off. But her music still lives on. Rest well Lady Day🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊
Love the sweet roll and pepperjack cheese reference! So true about her phrasing, and also her intonation was spot-on! IMHO, Dinah Washington belongs up there with Ella, Sarah, and Billie on the Mount Rushmore of female jazz greats.
This is the 1st time I've seen any footage of Dinah....always LOVED her voice....I have several cds of her music....what a wonderful talented woman she was, gone way too soon...thanks so much for posting this...REST IN PEACE Dinah ~ 💜

I don't see in nerves, but she did struggle with not feeling beautiful, so maybe you are correct. Vocally she was in her prime here lol and she was never unsure about her vocals.
A pessoa canta com uma voz maravilhosa, como se estivesse apenas "jogando conversa fora" no calçadão da praia, e esbanja um poder, uma elegância, um charme, que a gente não consegue parar de rever: Isso é Dinah Washington, meus queridos!
During the rehearsal for the Body and soul duet Tony Bennett tells Amy about how he knew Dinah and said she was fantastic and would just turn up at a place ready to perform with nothing more than a suitcase and say "Right i'm here." the clip can be seen on The "Zen of Bennett ."
A super star in her career, one which the "rat pack" all went hear their idol sing, and of course wanted her to part of the pack as an ancillary member. Was greater than she new. She made the pack, would attend private parties do duets along with, can you imagine: sing with Sinatra, Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., also lyrist/pianist jimmy Van Heusen all night party for the star, she established life long friends. She carries the show despite the second tier band, later the best of the best, she's now a legend.
Ballsy Gal who could do just about anything!!! She was real pretty when she’d take a notion to lose weight and show her facial structure!!! I still think the world of her!!! Thanks for this!!!
Back in 59, the critics pan Dinah Washington for selling out to the pop culture gentry, But for me, I'm so forever grateful, that is especially true with the album, What A Difference A Day Makes... My friend Darrell would like to know if the Drifters ever appeared on Bandstand Revue and if so, do you have any of the footage from that episode? Thank you - Bob R
Not really a fair comparison. Dinah's voice was much superior and quite unique. Billy Holiday's success was much more dependent on her style and phrasing than on the quality of her voice that even declined later in her career.
You know what’s sad about slavery, she looks just like my mom and she could possibly be my aunt...y’all really messed us up but to her music ...beautiful

Exactly
Love how you brought up Amy ❤

Amy is and was Trash.... never say her worthless name in the same breath as Dinah
Sarah Vaughan too the influence is clear
It's troubling to me that she struggled with self image, she looks beautiful here.

@@ceeceetracey9839 dark skin is still shuned. No, not to the degree of that specific time period but it's still well and alive

She was beautiful and classy. Her voice was so sultry and sexy. Dinah and Ms. Ella Fitzgerald are tied as my favorite jazz vocalists
Dinah is a legend. I also love Nancy Wilson, Eartha Kitt, Shirley Bassey, Aretha Franklin, Cissy Houston to name a few.
Great list Live Life
Mahalia Jackson, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Bessie Smith, Della Reese and Dionne Warwick no?

she was so talented she could have sang anything and turn it into a hit song.
Rest in peace Dinah Washington! 29 of August from 1924 Tuscaloosa Alabama USA 14 of December from 1963 Detroit Michigan USA
Pure singing right there

Same here. Dinah is my fave female vocalist from the 1950s

Jimmy London, a Jamaican reggae singer, covered this song in the 70s, And renamed it, " a little love". Excellent cover. Big up Jimmy.

Beautiful lady.
Love watching clips of the queen of the Blues
It's obvious she was nervous as all hell. She's beautiful!
