hey Wes i love your content so much you are the reason why i got into 40K i found your videos by mistake about a year ago and have been a loyal fan ever since. I have a video idea for you could you do a 40K vs Halo video because im in a argument with someone that the Necrons and Eldar could beat the forerunners and that tyranids are better and scarier than the flood but im still relatively inexperienced with 40k and cant argue properly for what i believe to be true. I love both universes but to me Halo seems like little league 40K

Honestly if it turned out that in reality Big E was some superhuman-psyker created during the peak of the Dark Age of Tech by use of the Warp it would actually make a lot more sense than the "tons of shamans did a ritual and combined their souls into one being" backstory.
kind of makes sense. maybe those shamans actually got a hold of the knowledge (probably incomplete) to make a god and made the emperor. I remember leutin kind of dismissing the 1000 shaman theory but now that I think about it, it does kinda make sense. It probably took the emperor millennia of training and learning to become as powerful as he was during the HH. Despite that though, he's not really as powerful as a full c'tan or an eldar god. Heck, I bet he got a massive power-up from adventuring throughout the immaterium and real space, which would explain his knowledge of the warp and how to make the primarchs. TLDR he's probably a god made by inferior beings based on the eldar god blueprint. basically an eldar god from wish.

I think everything else you said is spot on sir btw. But a second rate god could not boom out the Astronomicon across much of the Galaxy with such psychic might that it terrorises the Chaos gods and all warp entities. A knock off god could not turn up unannounced in the Garden Of Nurgle and trash the place like with zero effort, scaring old Grandpa fatty Nurgle to his wits end.

@@fluffymyato3334 I think he got to where he was in 30k via a pact with the major Chaos entities. We never got the full details of what happened on Moloch, but we do know he was basically a powerful psyker even before then.
The Eldar Gods were actually the punching bags that the Old Ones kept in their gym. Hence why Khaine gets punked so often.

So, an interesting line from the godblight novel actually stands as evidence for this theory. An Eldar seer sent by Yvraine to serve Guilliman provides him council on the topic of divinity. He explains that Eldar mythology believes that the gods existed before his people, but he is aware of the history of the war in heaven. He is also aware that many species have created gods out of shared belief, and explains that godhood is determined by might and faith rather than any kind of godly origins. He even claims that his people may believe their gods were there before them, but he acknowledges that they were most likely Eldar heroes who were eventually worshipped as gods. With the libra chaotica, I believe that the old ones told the Eldar to channel their power and faith into a particularly powerful hero in order to create the ultimate weapon, but after the war in heaven, history had become myth, and these heroes became true gods

The lore has changed a lot over the years. A couple quick corrections, Soulstones aren't technically wraithbone. They are a crystal that has been exposed to the warp and eye of terror for so long that they are able to contain power and can be attuned to Eldar souls. These crystals might have been wraithbone before the fall but I don't think its set in stone one way or another. This is why they have to be collected by Eldar in daring raids of the eye of terror.
As for the Eldar gods, originally they were created as part of the Eldar creation process by the Old Ones, the gods were kind of like the generals or titans of the Eldar forces, with Asuyran actually able to move entire stars to form runes of power to destroy armies of Necrons and Khaine able to go toe to toe with a C'tan and actually destroy one of his bodies. The Eldar gods performed several services, Isha seemed to be in charge of respawning Eldar by taking their souls and making new bodies, Asuryan as the strategist and general, Khaine as the heavy-hitting Hulk of the group, and Vaul as the tech and weapons development. The Eldar gods were unique among warp entities as they had been created by the old ones in a way that let them manifest in the materium wherever they wanted to and whenever they wanted to without ceremony, ritual, or external factors. This ability was disabled in them by Asuryan after Khaine got a prophecy from the newly emerged Tzeetch that the Eldar would be the death of the gods and he went on a slaughter to try to end the entire race.
Now it seems like the Old Ones created the Eldar with the capability of making gods and directed them on how to do so in a way that would give them special capabilities. Its a bit sad because rather than the Eldar gods being super unique doomsday weapons created by the Old Ones they are just stronger versions of your standard warp entities.

Yup, soul-stones or waystones are harvested from the crone worlds. Former Eldar worlds that were swallowed up by warp storms and 'changed' resulting in the psycho receptive crystal matrices.
There are however soul-stone equivalents that were available to shelter Eldar souls during the fall, for example the World Spirits of the Exodites and the infinity circuits of Craftworlds and Titans.
Calling the Eldar gods 'just stronger versions of your standard warp entities' may be downplaying their significance since they were very nearly as powerful as the free range chaos gods forged by the distress of an entire galaxy at war... If they are your yardstick for 'standard' then it begs the question of what would be exceptional.
It was only after millennia of decay and decadence that the Eldar Gods became degraded enough to be hamstrung and subsumed into she who thirsts and the other Chaos gods but until that point they were more than able to hold their own against the greatest known warp entities - the literal Chaos Gods, allowing the Eldar to not only survive but to become the masters of the galaxy.
However I disagree with Wes' conception of the Eldar gods as uber titans (war engines) since the Old ones had little need for physical weapons.
Firstly the Krork fulfilled that purpose and secondly the Necrons were far and away superior in terms of sheer material power. No, what the Old ones required were not bigger stompier weapons but non physical entities to which the Necrons and C'Tan had no direct counter.
I think your accounting of them as purposeful tools seems more accurate.
Just how weak the Necrons were against warp entities is revealed after the war in heaven by the release of the Enslavers and other 'wild' warp entities which resulted in the Necrons basically saying "F' this for a game of soldiers!" and choosing to play dead for millennia until the ruckus died down.
@@Quotheraving Sadly I heard that the enslavers are being retconned and it turns out that Chaos was always the threat. It was in a recent book that apparently Chaos was behind the war in heaven and the old ones might have fought the first great war against chaos with the necrontyr instead of those two races fighting... Not a fan.
I loved the idea that the Enslavers came and basically wiped out all life in the galaxy except for a few breeding pods left by the Old Ones, the Old Ones themselves, and the Eldar because their souls got taken by Isha and reborn after the cleansing, but that was back when the necrons fed on life and were mindless terminator zombies rather than space tomb kings.
Where’s you find this lore about Khaine fighting a C’tan or Asuryan moving stars to form runes?
Each faction in 40k has a unique relationship to their gods. I like to think that the Eldar curated / created their gods and had a mostly good relationship with them, until they were cut off from the warp due the drama with Khaine. Being cut off from their gods, the Eldar lost their way and created slaanesh, which fulfilled the prophecy of khaine being shattered by the eldar.

@@derrickallen8138 There's a very strong argument floating around that the primarch of the Blood Ravens is Magnus, and that they're the descendants of Thousand Sons that were sent away from Prospero before the Burning that remained loyalist (but naturally had to assume a new identity).

I personally think the Eldar gods are a mixture of actual Old Ones, Living Weapons and warp entities.
I mean when you read some of the stories of the war between the Eldar and the Necrons.
Like the Black Stone fortresses being known as the Talisman of Vaul which he used to defeat the Dragon.
Or that Khaine needed 100 special swords to entrap the Nightbringer.
Or one of their gods is a wanderer of the Webway.
None of those things sound specifically like something that gods would need because well they are GODS.
So maybe Some of the Eldar gods might have been actual old ones whose identity was later converted through retelling upon retilling to a god.
Other might have been sentient weapons made by the Old Ones and others still might be actual warp entities like the chaos gods.
Or they needed those for story telling😂

Why would gods need such physical items?
It seems to me that Vaul might originally have been an old one or something connected to the Old Ones that the Eldari didn´t understand.
So they told and retold the story and eventually Vaul the old one morphed into Vaul the god of crafting.
Also we know that the Eldari race where created or at the very least their evolution was manipulated by the old ones into what they needed at the time to fight the necrons and the c´tan.
We have similar things in our own story, not with gods but something like the Battle of Troy.
Sure the whole Paris of Troy took Helen from her husband Menelaus, king of Sparta which kicked of the whole war and that the gods directly interfered in the battle.
Might just have been a load of huha added to make the story interesting, or to explain natural disasters or the opposing side winning and losing.
But we have dug out the actual place, where the city of Troy where said to be and found a city plus signs of a large battle.
So maybe the same is true here.

I think your "None of those things sound specifically like something that gods would need because well they are GODS." line indicates monotheistic thinking where "god" means omnipotence (and various other adjectives starting with 'omni'). That's not how gods in Warhammer work. They have finite power (yes, even the Big Four), and anything with finite power might benefit from tools that allow them to focus their power or access additional power. But this does not stop them from being gods in the Warhammer sense. Gods in polytheistic mythologies often rely on various tools to enhance their power - most storm gods, for instance, have some tool that is created by another (most famously Thor's hammer, but also things like Zeus' thunderbolt) where their power is reduced if the tool is lost or stolen (one of the Norse myths involves the giants stealing Mjolnir, and the Aesir having to resort to subterfuge to recover it, including disguising Thor as an attractive goddess to get him close enough to the hammer to grab it).
I think it is quite possible that the identities of some of the gods might be based on Old Ones that the ancient Eldar interacted with. We see this a bit with the Fantasy Lizardmen - the Old Ones are worshipped as gods directly there, and some of the Old Ones worshipped by the Lizardmen look suspiciously similar to some of the Elven deities. However, suspiciously similar is not the same - some of the Eldar gods might be inspired by and loosely based on Old Ones, but they'd still be Ancient Eldar interpretations of what they see that Old One as representing that are distinct enough to be separate entities.
@@ErikjustVery easy answer to why warp gods would need physical items during the war in heaven. They weren't fighting warp entities, they were fighting the Ctan. The literal gods of the material plane who were capable of manipulating reality with ease. They had virtually full control over material space and time.
The warp entities that were the Eldar gods were forced to fight them on their own turf. The Ctan weren't going into the warp, and the power of the warp at the time was miniscule compared to the current Chaos gods. The eldar gods had no chance without using material sources of power.
You're talking as if them being called "gods" means they are stronger than the Ctan. But the unbroken Ctan put most gods to shame. Even the emperor in his prime would have almost no chance of defeating an unbroken Ctan. He struggled and defeated individual shards.
The necrons plotted for thousands of years and had super weapons where you could quite literally touch a planet on a map and delete it from reality. That's the kind of power that was required just to break a Ctan into shards. Even weapons with enough power to destroy entire solar systems in a minute or two couldn't truly kill a Ctan.

I like to think they’re sentient warp weapons that run on the energy of the Aeldari race’s overcharged emotions. The worship of the gods not only powered through weapons, but also staved off the debauchery that led to The Fall.

This actually sounds an awful lot like what Big E did with the current warp: grabbed some lesser great warp souls, and stuffed them into his Primarchs. It is possible that they manifested beings within the warp, and then stuffed them into wraith bone, whereby still being part of the warp, AND part of the immeterium.
There is some possible evidence for this on a smaller scale - I don't remember where exactly I read it, but I recall reading somewhere that wraithguard and the like USED to be able to function without being powered by Eldar souls. It's possible that before the Fall, they were powered by what were essentially daemons of the Eldar gods, similar to the daemon engines of Chaos but with more wholesome entities.
I think there's some additional context from the Fantasy Elves worth considering.
One, from a Warhammer RPG sourcebook from about the same time, had an Empire scholar being confused about a response from a High Elf scholar about an apparent inconsistency. The former had found texts saying the Elves were created by their gods and by the Old Ones and consulted the latter. The latter's response was (paraphrased): "Yes, we were created by the Old Ones. Yes, we were created by the gods. No, they are not the same. No, there is not an inconsistency". The pointy-ears in both settings are characterised by being able to hold apparently contradictory statements as both being true, but I tend to interpret it as recognising different forms of creation. The initial creation was by the Old Ones, but the influence of the gods also defined what it is to be an eldar. In essence, from a physical perspective they were created by the Old Ones, while in a spiritual and cultural sense they were created by both, and the pointy-ears recognise both. Which could explain how the gods could be created by the Eldar and also create the Eldar: the Old Ones created a kind of proto-Eldar, the proto-Eldar created the gods, and without the interaction between the proto-Eldar and the gods the Eldar wouldn't be what they are today. Essentially, the gods defined what it was to BE Eldar. One could think of it as being like the difference between being a neolithic human settled near the mouth of what would later be called the Tiber River and being Roman.
Another, which I think also came from the Liber Chaotica, is that there's a passage which talks about how the Fantasy Elves deliberately created their gods, and thus have somewhat more of a transactional relationship of semi-equals with them, as opposed to humans worshipping gods. However, the elven gods in fantasy are quite clearly 'normal' warp entities, rather than giant wraithbone constructs or the like. It's just that they understand how the Immaterium works, so they deliberately drew upon aspects of their psyche to create gods, and the bargain they have with them is that they'll provide power to their gods if their gods use that power to assist them in turn. This has somewhat been retconned (along with implications that most of the human gods are actually human interpretations of elven gods) in the End Times, but coming from the same source, it's probably indicative of what they might have been going for in the Liber Chaotica regarding the Eldar gods.
So here's what my thinking is: The proto-Eldar, perhaps with guidance from the Old Ones, deliberately created warp eddies from different parts of their psychology, creating sentient concepts of war, rulership, motherhood, humour, hunting, and so on, in a similar manner to how the Chaos Gods and demons would be formed accidentally. These gods were able to manifest in the physical realm and fight the C'tan on relatively equal terms. However, the act of creating these gods served to codify which cultural concepts were important to the Eldar, shaping the development of the Eldar from then on. Therefore the moment the gods were creating demarks a distinct enough cultural shift that later Eldar would regard it at the point at which their ancestors became truly Eldar, thereby regarding it as a second process of creation for their race.

i think the warp is known for changing and "warping" things based on the emotions of beings in the physical universe. i think if the old ones guided the eldari to create superweapons as a counterpoint to the c'tan, after millions of years of war and losing the old ones, the superweapons would be worshipped as these battle ending powers and the warp would reflect that, tying a god explicitly to the superweapon itself, the eldar souls being hugely impactful in the warp and their numbers being galaxy spanning would make this much more likely. i dont see any reason against the eldar gods having origins as superweapons or megastructures that then gained a reflection in the warp turning them truly into gods.
side note: its possible vashtorr is somehow related to these ancient eldari constructs, but much more likely vashtorr the arkifane is a twisted reflection of the mechanicus' worship of machines.

My understanding was that the Old Ones engineered the Aeldari with heightened emotions and high population growth in order to facilitate the rapid coalescing of warp entities. They then directed the Aeldari in how to focus that emotional energy in such a way as to speed up the process further through mass ritual on a pan galactic scale. These warp entities, made to spec by the Aeldari using the Old Ones' directions, were used as the primary weapons against the C'tan during the War in Heaven, with Kaine being a front lines fighter going up against them directly, Isha enhancing the Aeldrai's healing and reproductive process to further increase their population to speed up the manufacture of more gods, etc.
Since the Warp is timeless, once a god came into being, it had always been there, so the mythological belief that their gods predated them isn't a huge problem.
Slaneesh would be what happens when that emotional energy isn't properly channeled, while Yneed is a result of using that old knowledge in a deliberate fashion after Slaneesh came into existence, and burning souls to make up for the massively lowered population the Aeldari now have after Slaneesh's birth destroyed the Aeldari Empire. Possibly using a method the Old Ones provided for birthing the very earliest of the Aeldari gods, since they would have had the same sort of population issues and massive opposition in the beginning of their race, when the Old Ones were already fighting the War in Heaven, and thus had a limited ability to protect their newly cultivated weapon races.
I would further posit that the prison worlds that the Old Ones have full of daemons of all four Chaos Gods predated the Chaos Gods themselves, with the Old Ones essentially imprisoning daemons that represented concepts they didn't want to see coaless into proper gods in the Warp. Once the Old Ones died out, they were no longer able to perform that cultivation, so the Chaos Gods were able to coaless out of the appropriate daemons that had been spawned in the meantime.

I never heard this theory before but I find it very believable. If the small volume of eldar have a chance of creating Ynned, it’s hard to not believe that the galaxy, potentially universe spanning one’s back in the ear in heaven wouldn’t have been able to create their own gods.
I’ll add my own spin on it through and say they weren’t all war engines in the strictest sense and maybe some were to heal the sick and injured, some produce arms, etc. All in line with the domain of each of the gods

This was a really good video to get the ball rolling again. Your theory is actually really good, with what I know about warp base shenanigans that could actually be what happened. This is a very interesting theory to me, I don’t think it’s outside the realm of possibility at all. Crazier things have happened in Warhammer 40k and I really like the connection Warhammer fantasy and 40k even if they are separate it almost feels like the writers are rewarding those who read the other material with little thought provoking questions.
Also side note, gonna steal the concept of ‘man made god’ here for a campaign I’m running so thank you for the idea. It’s not the first time I’ve heard the idea (fear and hunger does an excellent job at this) but I really enjoy your presentation on the matter! When the reveal comes to my players, I’ll link ‘em to this video!

Yes absolutely, based on the videos I’ve seen you put out i think you’d love them. Word of warning, they are difficult ( I have yet to beat the first one). Also, over all both are amazing, but the second one is much more streamlined and polished. Though I’d recommend starting with the first one if you can!
I wish they'd give us some more official lore of the war in heaven, if not from the Eldar side of things at least from the Necron side. Since the Necrons are truly immortal they're still living from back then and even if we got just brief accounts of what they remember from before their Eons long slumber and then the rest being present day 40k would be so cool and start the building on that lore and could help people get more interested in the War in Heaven

Not sure about the eldar making the gods bit. But overall i do like the idea of the rldar using power to create mega weapons like the phoenix heart.
Thing is in the eldar codex it states that khaine taught the arts of war to the phoenix lords. He wouldn't be teaching the eldar things they already know because his knowledge would have had to come from them if they created him.

In my lore, they are ascended divinities from the Weapons of war they were first created as. Also, My 5 craftworlds are based on Morai-Heg, who read the proverbial tea leaves, and before she died, split herself into 6 beings, one to "die" to Slaanesh, and 5 others to be the Avatars of those 5 craftworlds, Including Craftworld Iybraesil .

I don't remmeber where I heard it, but a theory about the Eldars' Gods I quite like is that they were the first Eldar that the Old Ones created and from conglomeration of a portion of each the actual race was created. Somewhat similar to the Primarchs and the Legions. In fact, part of the theory is that Big E took inspiration from the Eldar for his sons...

I have a question for you @WesHammer are there any other legions/primarchs you are interested in doing deep dive lore videos on. I recently watched the thousand sons one and it was amazing!
My theory and what I always assumed is that ultimately, the eldar were weapons to create and channel gods of the warp. Something that always bothered me is when you compare the eldar to the necons and especially the kroks, they seem weak. I think we're now seeing a fraction of the true might of what the eldar could do.
During the war in heaven, the warp wasn't as sealed off from real space as it is now. If I remember correctly, the eldar gods separated the two when Khaine went on a killing spree post-war. So when the warp was closer to real space, the eldar were far stronger, like we are starting to see in the current setting with the creation of the great rift.
In the current setting, we also know that the eldar created Slaanesh and are currently creating Ynnead. We've also seen Yvraine channel the power of Ynnead to perform miracles as well.
So, imagine the old ones who were masters of the warp as well as genetics, created a species to fight in this war that would devastate reality. They created the eldar to harness the warp and channel it in incredible ways. They created this species that uses the warp to create beings that can rival the star gods, and in turn could give them strength to fight.
I don't think that the eldar gods were wraith bone constructs because they don't need to be. I think they were true gods of the warp that were created as weapons.
As an Eldar/Aeldari player I haven't spent much time looking at their history and lore. Seeing as I also make vids on another channel I suppose I should but my channel is all about getting people into 40k, teach them the basics then pass them onto people like you, Baldemort, Majorkill, and Sandman etc. I'll get the noobs and get them hooked on the basics you do the rest.
Wellllll... The Eldar "did" Blowbang a god into existence after all. So I feel like this is not too outlandish of a theory.
Actualy I thought this was already an accepted fact in the lore. That the Eldar had created their own Gods as WMDS for the war in heaven.
I feel like their creation is something like the demon engines that chaos use. Like what if they simply made a vessel and entities from the warp just played into the role?
You missed that Elder Gods was created as a side effect of the Webway that connected every part of the Eldar Empire to be one gigantic collective "supercomputer" like socialite powered by close unknown AI technology.

The god machines hypothesis doesn't seem all that far fetched given that a craft worlds infinity circuit can contain souls. i also think I came across something, somewhere in 40k that refereed to the Eldar gods as weapons or creations of the old ones, also that bit about you can't just make a god by having 1000's of psychers do magic sounds a hell of a lot like the prehistoric shaman origin of the emperor which may or may not be mutually exclusive with the an old one made him origin.
Amd now i want a Weshammer/MatPat collab. I think it would be amazing..... But that's just a theory.
How gods work in 40k is pretty similarly to how gods work in Neil Gaiman’s books, in terms of belief as a mechanism of revival and that gods are neither living nor dead, but that being forgotten and brought back from oblivion requires a criteria of belief or lack thereof.
Fun theory, toss it to Majorkill and see if has anything to add. His favorite faction is Eldar (I think)

I quite like this theory as they're other bits of lore that support ai type machines becoming warp empowered. In the Grey Knight's Omnibus they fight a Dark Age of Technology Titan that had an ai core and at the end turns into a daemon
I think it is also likely that the original Eldar machines were possessed by warp creatures, which is why their deities manifested through avatars that the Eldar created for them.
Of course the Eldar built their own gods. What greater arrogance than using gods as tools?

The theory makes total sense in terms of Warhammer as a universe. Belief and actions play a huge role in major aspects. The Emperor was willed into being, orcs use technology through belief, the chaos gods came about because of the war and death and negative emotions but still essentially belief or feelings. The idea that their gods were created through belief is par for the course.
Is there a chance you could do one on the necrons old lore? Like how their weapons actually sucked in The souls of those they've killed and how they would take people and turn them into more necrons.
That was definitely the case in the past but they are no longer that anymore. The Aeldari/Elven gods were those constructed super weapons but after the planet Mallus that Warhammer Fantasy took place on blew up the surviving gods gained physical forms in Age of Sigmar. The free fragment of Isha merged with the elf Alarielle, Khaine got murdered and his power absorbed into the now deified elf Morathi, and Kuronous is half dead and his reincarnation is running around as Belthanos. Side note, I am 100% convinced the missing sword of Khaine ended up on Mallus. There was literally a sword of Khaine there and the smith god Vaul was confirmed to have been hiding on Mallus there during the End Times.

Just to be that guy 13:11 Ynnead is extremely young. The Death Star construct of your theory would be Morai-Heg; the one who’s hand is the crone blades.
Maybe the gods were warp super weapons that were powered by the Eldar but after the Old Ones died/left the eldar went through a similar decline as the Krork. This could leave them incapable of comprehending these super weapons for what they were and only see them as gods. Then due to warp shenanigans sentient warp entities/gods, similar to what seems to be happening to The Emperor.
Could you imagine fielding a Krork Army on the table? War in Heaven armies would cost a mint😮
The way I have always viewed it is also how I viewed how Gork and Mork rose to God status, that they were either specifically made by the Old Ones and imbued with a fraction of their power which grew from the veneration of the rank and file of those who they would become deities to or they had been the first of their respective races entirely and because of that "purity" they had a higher growth potential then their kin. That growth of all their respective skills and them passing on similar skills, explaining Eldar myths on the Gods blessing them with traits, would then possibly lead to the end result of them being worshipped as Gods given flesh by an unknown number of not only their own races but any other Old One made races during the war as they racked up victories, ascending them.

I don't know much about the Eldar or their mythology but I do know some aspects of it. When I was watching this the one aspect of their myths that came to mind was Dromlach (The Cosmic Serpent). He is not a god in the Eldar pantheon but he does play a role in their mythology and his young have connection to the Eldar god Cegorach (laughing god). In fact the Craftworld Saim-Hann have him as their symbol. However that's not the part I find most interesting about this being. It's that he is connected to various mythologies, legends and creation myths around the galaxy. Most notably is the original religion of Baal had before the emperor featured Dromlach.
