Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward were customers of a grocery store in Beverly Hills where I worked In 1978. One day, I made a delivery to their rented house on Beverly Drive. I was greeted at the door by Mr. Newman who invited me in, and introduced me to Ms. Woodward. They were both so charming and friendly to me, a gawky 18 year old delivering them groceries. I couldn’t believe how blue his eyes were. Almost superhuman. But his demeanor and kindness couldn’t have been more human and down to earth.

Paul, I believe may have saved my life. It was a snowing evening near Chicago, as I left the campus of Indiana University NW in Gary, Indiana. Was 18-19 yrs of age a good driver and had prepared my car for the various winter Chicago snow storms, with studded deep traction snow tires. As I drove out of the parking lot it began to drissel globes of wet snow by the time I got to the Interstate Hwy a blast of very cold wind had turned the roads to ice with an inch or two of fresh powder snow. Driving down the entrance ramp hardly able to see through the snow the masses of trucks barreling down the 5 lane highway, my car hit the ice did 5-6 complete spins before hitting the iron guard rails off the passing lane and came to a halt but facing oncoming traffic.. Being a juvenile diabetic with a small amout of emergency candy being stuck there for long was a dangerous option, but conditons gave me no way to re-enter the busy highway. When I saw red backup lights in my reaview mirror inching toward my car, a man got out I rolled down my window and Mr. Blue Eyes locked into mine and said "drive backward follow my tail lights theres is a break a little ways up where you can turn about." As I finally was able to drive toward toward home I heard an anouncer on the radio(WLS?) say the Play with Paul Newman was being delayed do to the weather. What a great human beingto risk his own safety and reponsibility to his work to have help me in a bad situration. Love You Paul Wherever You Are PS always buy you food product.

One of my favorite Paul Newman bits is his appearance on "what's my line", because it's all yes-or-no questions asked by a panel, and they couldn't put him in a box. "Are you shall we say, a serious actor, or more of a popular actor?" Grammar forces Paul Newman to say yes. Then it's "Are you an actor on Broadway"? Yes. "Have you performed in any Hollywood roles?" yes.
The more questions they asked, the more confused they got. They approached it in an either/or mindset, so they never figured it out. Of American actors, only maybe Brando or Montgomery Clift could have tied the panel into knots like that, except with Newman I can't think of a single category where they weren't screwed. Comedic or serious? You're never going to narrow it down like that.
After 20 questions all they'd managed to determine was that he was an American who didn't sing.

Many times I met Paul Newman in Westport, Connecticut restaurant (just a few tables away) Paul noticed the massive/king cut prime rib meal I was enjoying. When leaving with his daughter he stopped giving me a thumbs up for finishing. Another meeting was at my friends famous Sea Food Shop with JoAnn in Fairfield and numerous times while at Bob Sharp Nissan while my Nissan ZX was being serviced , his Nissan Sports Car also!. Most favorite time: he stopped at my friends diner (in his white tee shirt, jeans and sunglasses) reading the newspaper and enjoying a hamburger and my owner friends never announced who he was, often sitting next to me enjoying a normal day out without anyone making such a fuss. 🌹Great actor, family man and business owner🌹

@@maryshanley329. Johnny Carson also lost a son, to suicide. Bing Crosby also lost a son. I’m not a 100 percent on this, but I think it was suicide. From what I’ve read, Bingo wasn’t a good father. Think he had 4 children all together.

    • @maryshanley329
      @maryshanley329 10 месяцев назад +3

I think Bing Crosby lost 2 sons to suicide. As I remember, they were alcoholics.
Bing’s wife was an alcoholic and at home. He was trying to manage both roles.
Yes, he was strict with his sons. When that occurs, it is usually the way his father raised him. In those days, children in general were taught good behavior. It was just a given. We were just expected to act in such a way. Good manners, etc. In my family, no one raised their voice or threatened us.
Bing Crosby may just have been in over his head. Coming home and seeing such an
unhealthy atmosphere must have made him too angry.
I think alcohol may have been a factor with him also.
Some people who drink get terribly nasty. Johnny Carson was one.
Paul Newman lost a son from an overdose. That son was from his first marriage.
      He was a good father.
Clint Eastern also raised his children with no drugs or alcohol just a given.
He son Scott spoke about his father’s leadership. I think he was quite proud of his dad.
It must be very difficult for famous parents to do a good job.
When Angela Lansbury’s children got into trouble with drugs, she moved her entire family to Ireland where her mother was born. County Cork.
I think she solved the situation.

I was fishing on Lake Minnetonka in Minnesota around 1980. A man walked out towards me onto his dock from a beautiful mansion. I thought he was going to yell at me to get away from his dock. Instead, he asked if they were biting, and talked fishing with me for a few minutes. Later I told my wife how the guy had the bluest eyes and looked like Paul Newman. We read in the paper later Paul was staying at his place on Minnetonka for some event! What a nice guy! We read later that Paul had several homes around the world, and was paying a butler $20k a year ( a nice salary in 1980) to stay there, and keep it stocked, in case he decided to show up there.
