I saw your video on Epic Gardening's channel and just had to find you! Your space is AMAZING! New subbie! I'm buying two Greenstalks while they're on sale for Labor Day. I was just going to plant veggies, but now you got me wondering how I can fit some flowers on my small patio space outside lol.
Great Video. I was laughing when you said you may never leave the city...my daughter lived in a high rise in Chicago and just bought a 23 acre farm in upstate NY LOL. never say never. We miss visiting Chicago its an amazing city. And we were so surprised at how green it is and so many beautiful plantings and gardens.
I love how green this city is! Fun fact, the slogan of Chicago is Urbs in Horto or city in a garden. How is your daughter liking the transition to farm life??
I love your channel and your success could not have happened to a nicer person! I like your idea about using Instagram as I have not done that with my channel yet. I can also relate to the compliments from the neighbors. They love walking by each day and seeing the latest thing popping up and/or blooming. Keep up the great work 👊🏻🌻👊🏻
I enjoy your channel so much. have similar special memories of my grandpa's garden in the suburbs of Chicago. My grandma also made strawberry rhubarb pie every summer and would preserve green beans all summer. My love for zinnias began in my grandpa's I learned so much from him.
❄️ 🪴🪴🪴❄️ What’s worked for me is wrapping the container with bubble wrap ( held in place with tape or staples). Burlap over wrap (for aesthetic and an added layer of insulation) kept in place with twine, then mulching. I really hope your new hardier evergreens 🌲🌲 make it thru the winter. Loved your container gardening video on Epic Gardening!
Your deck gardens are lovely and remind me of Europeans gardening in small spaces. I have a yard but do a lot of container gardening, mostly to capture sun in a shady garden and to deter rabbits. I haven't seen any other channels devoted to container gardening and appreciate all the good info.
Love this video. I started my love of gardening in my great grandfathers garden. I remember picking tomatoes and walla walla onions to make tomato and onion sandwiches as a very young girl. I too thought his garden was huge but I don’t really know if it was. I look forward to hearing how you prepare for winter. This is my second year container gardening. It’s much different than gardening in ground. ❤🪴
You’re the BEST! Thank you for replying to my questions my dear. I’m going to search nearby nurseries to see if any sale their own potting mix I can purchase from. Also, I’ve never planted herbs before. You made them sound so good! And have inspired me want to go for it now. 🪴☀️😊
In the past few days I’ve dug out a 3’x40’ raspberry bed (northwest Michigan, zone 5/6). I’ve prepped two 25 gallon nursery cans (from trees) and will TRY growing berries in these raised beds. If it’s not successful, the rest of these berry canes will go! In the meantime, I’m looking forward to planting this cleared 120 sq ft bed with hydrangeas and perennials.
A bit of both! For annuals with large rootball, like my tomatoes, I find it easier to cut the stem and wait until spring to remove the rootball. For smaller plants or if I need to plant something else in the space, I’ll pull the whole plant!
Your deck garden has been an inspiration for me. Even though I do have gardens in my landscape, I love having a container garden on my deck close to my kitchen. Your videos have been very helpful. After watching one of your videos, I planted raspberries in containers. They are Joan J, thornless. They are really tall. What do you do for winter care? How often and when to fertilize? I have grown raspberries in the ground, but I am assuming they might need more fertilizer in containers.
I will have to check out that variety since they are thornless! Are they more tall than wide? For me, raspberries have been one of the plants I can do nothing to over the winter and they survive! It's been 3 or 4 winters now and I just push the pot up against out house, but don't do anything else. I do fertilize more often than if I was growing in the ground. Not as often as my annuals, but I'll add compost and slow release fertilizer to the top of the pot each spring, then I'll do a liquid 10-10-10 or any other all purpose fertilizer about one a month until September.
You are so sweet and your garden is beautiful!! So incredible for a roof top garden! I do have a question about reusing potting soil. Every time I take a plant out of the pot the whole thing has roots so there is nothing to reuse. Does this happen to you? Am I missing on how to reuse potting soil?
It does happen to me! In that case I use new potting soil. I mostly refresh my raised beds and 30 gallon grow bags because the roots don’t fill those up.
Hi neighbor, I live in Chicago as well and just starting my gardening journey. I have built 2 raised beds in my backyard in preparation for Spring 2025 planting. My beds are 32in high and will need a ton of soil to fill. Can you please advise what local nursery you use to get your compost? Also where locally do you buy seeds from? Thank you kindly 🙏🏽
Gethsemane garden center in Andersonville is where I get more of my garden stuff. There are a lot of great nurseries though. What area of Chicago are you in?
@@ChicagoGardener I live in the Southshore neighborhood, if you know of any local garden centers in the area please let me know, I’d much rather support a small business with knowledgeable staff opposed to a big box store. I will check out Gethsethane, thanks for the recommendation 🙏🏽
I have a video on my channel showing how I do it if you search for “deadheading hydrangeas” but in general, I’ll remove spent blooms at any time throughout the season and cut right below the flower head.
Oh my gosh! I am so in need of the upcoming overwintering video. Waiting with bated breath.love your great videos!thank yoy❤
There will be a lot of them!

I’m so glad you’re here!! Flowers have taken over my garden 🤣 I need to force myself to save more space for veggies next year.

My sister in law’s son moved to Chicago a year or 2 ago. When she and my brother visit there they love it!
Great Q and A, and as always your Deck garden is beautiful.
Thank you!!
Im doin it!! Im buying the flower market stand. I have all winter to pick the flowers for it 🎉
Yay!!

I love that! It does seem like a lot of the love for gardening is passed down through generations.

Perfect!! I’ll try that with mine this year.

Omg now my mouth is watering thinking about a tomato and onion sandwich!
Maybe you should consider the Raspberry Shortcake plant that is happy in a container and thornless!
That sounds perfect! How big does it get?
Execelente actitud

False Fall, so ready for the cooler weather
I've never been more ready for cool weather than I have this year!

That’s so exciting!! We absolutely love northwest Michigan, we’ll be up in Traverse soon!
@@ChicagoGardener , I’m just 30 miles north, in Northport. Beautiful area to work and live.
Cant wait to see what you do with annuals/Perennials! Pull whole plant out or do you cut at base of plant?

How do you clean your garden tools? Pruners, loppers etc.
❤

Hi Steph, wondering how and when to deadhead hydrangeas?

You never know how you end up in the suburbs 😂
That’s so true 🤣🤣🤣
