You could also do a parallel zero in which you would zero the laser parallel to the bore(which allows for shooting at varying distances as the hold overs for the laser would be verticle rather than horizontal as they would be with a converging zero).

No. Your red dot will "move" with your eye. You could zero the laser to your irons though. That'd get you close enough to confirm zero at the range later.

For instance, after installing the battery, instead of screwing on the light‐head, is there just a dummy cap that can be screwed on, shorting the overall length of the unit and effectively turning it into a laser unit only? Or would I have to machine my own cap for something like that?

I have a zenitco perst 4 and the green laser is probably a 10MW laser. Not buying that again though ...way too expensive now. With these CMR301 units it seems like you get either a solid unit or a trip to the ups store . I bought one just now and hope i get a good unit. Come on crimson trace. Step up the quality control

Attached mine yesterday at the range - Laser was DEAD ON , no adjustment needed.
So i ZEROED my red dot optic to match the laser.
