    More and more people what to record audio on their computer, but often the sound quality can be improved by using a tube preamp.
    While in the past I did review the bigger brother of this preamp, the Behringer MIC 500 has an integrated USB audio interface, while the MIC 100 is only the preamp.
    If you already own an audio interface but the mic input is not strong enough to handle certain mic, or you want to improve the audio by adding a tube, the tube ultragain can be a useful budget option.
    Some dynamic microphones can be more demanding on the preamps in your audio interface, and by using a separate preamp to amplify the signal before recording it the results can be improved.
    While the Behringer certainly is not a high-end device, if you properly it can be a nice addition to your setup and help get more out of your recordings.
    For beginners, pure USB mics are the easiest to use, but XLR gear has the advantage that you can mix and match different pieces of equipment.
    Overall a nice little preamp, that can be easily put before your audio interface.

    A very good and comprehensive review. I've actually got one of these and haven't used it for a while. Now I have a decent AI and a nice condenser mic I'm going to dig it out again and get it fired up.

    Thanks a bunch for the in depth review. Exactly what I needed to see :) one question though. When you turn on phantom power on the ultragain (for the microphones who use it), you Don't switch the phantom power on onto the Focusrite, am I correct? The provided phantom power is only the one coming from the ultragain? Thank you in advance for the help :)

    • @jazzslant
      @jazzslant 3 года назад

      Yep, I found that out by trial and error. Even without the phantom power on my Focusrite, the signal coming from the Ultragain with phantom power was super hot so I had to turn everything way down. So much so I'm questioning whether I need to use the Ultragain at all.

    You don't really need to use de interface if you have the preamp. Go the analog way: you can connect the output directly in the computer mic/line input and it should sound about the same as using an external soundcard or interface.

    • @ReviewTechTV

      The Behringer Tube Ultragain is a XLR audio device thats best used with other XLR gear or an external USB Audio Interface.

    • @actuallyganta6044
      @actuallyganta6044 4 года назад

      @@ReviewTechTV I see, thank you. I'm not sure if this is outside of yout expertise, but I'll give it a chance anyways. You see, the reason I asked is that I've heard very good things about the Audiophile 2496, but obviously I need to process XLR and arguably jack too, which this soundcard doesn't have.
      I'm pretty new to audio hardware, so I don't fully understand it all yet. So my question is, do you know what would be my best solution if I wanted to process XLR and jack while using the Audiophile 2496? Obviously I'd also like to avoid too much unnecessary stuff so that the audio can be processed as quickly as possible by the CPU.

  • @SoundPeer
    @SoundPeer 5 месяцев назад

    I'm sorry but all this effort of yours seems to be in vain: the point of doing a review of this mic preamp is to hear the difference between the sound of a mic WITHOUT the preamp VS the sound of a mic WITH the preamp.
    How else can I see what the preamp is doing to the sound of the various microphones?

    • @ReviewTechTV
      @ReviewTechTV  5 месяцев назад

      For a budget setup you don’t necessarily need a preamp, cause mics like Behringer XM8500 are already pretty sensitive.

    • @ReviewTechTV
      @ReviewTechTV  5 месяцев назад

      On the other hand gain hungry mics like the Shure SM7B sound a lot better with pro preamps like the Golden Age Audio Premier PRE-73.

    • @ReviewTechTV
      @ReviewTechTV  5 месяцев назад

      In my opinion the audio sounds best with analog outboard gear, currently running the Shure SM7B into PRE-73 and then into DBX286s channel strip.

    • @ReviewTechTV
      @ReviewTechTV  5 месяцев назад

      The important point is to understand that creating a signature sound quickly can get expensive and requires more experience in setting up preamp, compression and EQ correctly.

    • @ReviewTechTV
      @ReviewTechTV  5 месяцев назад

      For budget gear like the Behringer I would’t really worry too much.
