    Units like this actually work great for guitar, as both a DI box and a re-amp box. Also, if you want to introduce some "tube chaos" to your digital amp modeler, aka actual tube overdrive, run this between your power amp and the output of your amp sim or preamp pedal. You can also put it between your guitar and the input for your amp. I have some tube desktop preamps from ART and use them for stuff like this all the time.

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  Год назад +2

      That's very interesting. I appreciate the insight because that's not something I've done before, but that makes sense to use this to add some additional overdrive to a DI signal.

    Limiter needs to be as close to seamless as possible. That there's a noticeable drop in volume when the limiter is triggered is really bad. Is there any way to adjust that?

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  Год назад

      The only way to adjust that is to decrease your gain so you're not hitting the limiter as hard. Maybe there's someway to mess with the circuitry to get a different limiter sound, but I'm too dumb for that.

    I wonder if a different tube would change the headroom or if it’s baked into the circuit. 🤔

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  Год назад +2

      There was a comment from someone pointing out that the tube is underpowered and doesn't really do much for the sound other than add some grittiness to it so a tube change wouldn't do much to alter the sound since it's not being used to amplify the source,.

    • @ahriik
      @ahriik Год назад +3

      If it's anything like the ART tube preamps (which I assume it is, because it's clearly based on it), then yes swapping in a better tube can definitely improve the performance and sound. Very common mod for the ART stuff.
      And by "better," I really mean anything that suits your taste more than the stock one, whether that's better noise performance, less or more distortion, etc.

  • @codegame027
    @codegame027 Год назад +3

    Aren't "tubes" by definition introducing some form of distortion?

    • @7171jay
      @7171jay Год назад +3

      @codegame Actually tubes run properly can have more headroom than transistors. However in this Behringer unit the tube is not even the amplifying device. This is a transistor micpreamp with a tube stuck in the middle of the circuit running at very low (improper voltage). Around 50 volts a preamp tube doesn't give much amplification at all it just adds some fuzzy buzzy stuff to your signal. Some people like this on some sources especially on bass guitar and on drums if you like that lofi thing. Personally I'd say just on bass but it depends what kind of sonic "fun" you happen to enjoy.

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  Год назад

      People like classic preamps because of the distortion, but on the LA610, Portico 5017, and WA73EQ, I don't have the distortion all the time. I can get a pretty clean signal out of all of those if I want.

    • @7171jay
      @7171jay Год назад

      @Podcastage Well it is a starved plate (low voltage toob) device so that sound is indeed part of the deal. Never been my cup of tea but some people do like that fuzzy buzzy effect. A high quality micpre (tube or some transistor designs) if pushed really hard can get some interesting distortion but it is certainly different than a starved plate cheapie like this and as you mentioned in another comment one has the option of clean with a quality micpre or even just a tiny bit of warmth. These toob Behringer and other similar devices by ART and DBX are indeed cheap and do what they do... some find use for them while others just choose to avoid them. Good review of this product as usual even if you didn't try out the pad with the U87 but more importantly I think getting people to understand what is actually in these cheap toob devices and how they work compared to a real tube micpreamp that has transformers and runs at real tube voltages would be cool.

    Interesting, i recently dusted off mine which i bought ages ago. Overall, you get what you pay for however, its recently found a place for me to add a touch of body and grit to a cheap bass (upgraded pickups) and with a sm57 for double tracked vocals to sit under the primary vocals (aston spirit into an audient ID14). But mainly for bass.

The reason I'm getting it is because my SE2200T is being repaired and I am using my SE2200A as a back up on rock vocals and I tried my friends Behringer mic200 as a trial, I found using the MIC200 with my SE220A added that certain gnarl the SE220T had built in, it was pretty close and to my ears softened the highs a little compared to straight into my focusrite.. too clean for me... BUT!!!.... for high velocity Rock type vocals the MIC200 sounded cleanest (With a touch of drive) when I used the SE2200A -10 db pad.. I have a very loud voice so maybe not applicable to quieter singers! Anyway I must get back to getting a life ! LOL Keep up the great work sir! 😀

    Hey! I actually have one of these bad bois. I liked it quite alot for plugging instruments with pickups into my behringer uphoria interface, to give it a little more gain for re-amping/pluging purposes. Works pretty ok, kinda noisy, but, for under a hundred bucks, it's really not bad. I think most of the mojo is the little 'dirtyness' that it adds, and it seems to be very happy input/output impedance wise for guitar/bass pickups.
    The ART Studio V3 replaced it for me, it has the variable voicing thing that gives it some good color when you want it, and stays cleanish when you don't, and the noise floor is much better. I have had a bug to maybe try and modify the behringer, because it's supposed to be a straight clone of the ART design and probably just uses worse components that're easily replaceable.

    • @Podcastage

      @jttech44 Год назад

      @@alandavidson8311 Kindof depends on what you want out of it in my experience. I do still like it alot for tracking bass, but, anything you want to add a little grit and non-linearity to is a good fit, as is instruments you plan on re-amping later, as it can give some 'character' to otherwise sortof 'meh' reamp software.
      Everything Bandrew said about noise floor and gain staging is 100% true though. I sharpie markered where 'unity' is for low/high gain settings because out of the box it's very much a "lol guess" scenario.

    • @jttech44
      @jttech44 Год назад +1

      @@jasondorsey7110 I'm a fan of the slovtec long plates for 12ax7 hifi use. I wouldn't say that I've ever done a tube swap and thought "wow, that's much lower noise" however, because the noise originates elsewhere in the circuit, and if you'e really concerned with that, adding additional filtering to the power section is really where most of the problem will be. That and cheap, hissy resistors that need attending to.

    • @7171jay
      @7171jay Год назад +2

      Changing the tube doesn't matter much as it isn't even an actual gain stage in the circuit. The real work of amplification here is done by transistors not the tube which runs at too low an operating voltage to even function as a preamp tube was originally intended to. The tube (or toob as I would call it in this case) just adds some "fun" fuzzy buzzy stuff to your signal. Putting a "better" or different tube in here isn't going to change much just like putting really expensive tires on your car won't matter if you run them all flat.

I know it's a bit out of your range but if you did a video that explained these and maybe did some tube swapping (which has been as hotly debated for many years now as the sound quality or lack thereof of the device) I think you could really bring some needed insight to this topic.

    This is a neat toy, thanks for sharing! Does seem to add some sense of openness to the recordings, but hey im a sucker for that kinda sound. Not super noticeable on the electric guitar but your voice and the acoustic both had just more a sense of body and air somehow, which doesn't track with the upper treble roll-off. More like nuances were being amplified and brought to the forefront? Just got to the full mix bit, yeah that's some nice dirt.

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  Год назад

      I'm guessing you're hearing the distortion exaggerate certain things because it was quite apparent on the music test. Just adding some dirt was really cool and fun and different.

      @@Podcastage Almost certainly so. I maintain that FR is far from everything to consider with audio gear, but FR masking is very much a thing, and reshaping things so harmonics are more prominent can definitely add to that sense of "there"ness.
