I dont know how you do it but every time I think about a topic, you got a video. Really helpful content

Thank you! I was unsure on how the best way to film this one to show results... Hopefully I got the message across enough. It's a nifty little unit. I'm going to try it against a ribbon mic next and see how that goes, I'm sure it will be as effective!
I wish there were more little units like this!

I'd recommend using one of these as a DI box with a distortion pedal run into it, gain on the tube pre set so the the tube is clean when the pedal is bypassed, but overdrives a bit when the pedal is engaged (preferable that the pedal is set to just above unity volume). It basically turns any distortion pedal into a preamp pedal so long as you put an IR on it, or you can run it into some sort of power amp and drive a cab. You can also use it this way with an OD pedal, and then send THAT to your amp sim or actual amp. I've used the similar preamps from ART this way. I've even stacked 2 of them to get a gain cascade lol. I've also used units with limiters and compressors as DI boxes for bass, or after a normal DI box or preamp with an XLR out. I've also used these as volume boosters/attenuators to reamp software amp sims through a real cab using a rack mount power amp. I actuall have some demo recordings for my old band where both guitars were a either a Zoom multi-FX unit or a Behringer UM300 run into a cascaded pair of tube mic pres, which was run into an ART SLA-1 power amp, which powered a boutique 4x12 cab, which was double mic'd up and run through a Behringer Xenyx 802 mixer into an interface, where it finally hit REAPER. The gain on the Zoom and Behringer guitar pedals were kept VERY low due to the cascading of that gain into two hybrid preamps with solid state and tubes, and I used an actual overdrive pedal (TS9 clone) to push the "input" of the amp sims on the Zoom. That sounds complex, because it was, but holy shit did it come out good. I was beyond impressed with the results. I'm the vocalist in the band, and this is all my guitar equipment used, lol, because the guitarist couldn't bring his guitar and his amp (with good reason, because getting to me and where we recorded involved an 8 hour flight from Miami to Seattle lol).

That is really cool your mind went towards using this as a guitar chain, that is awesome! I think we can get caught out too many times no utilizing equipment for everything in the studio. This could be a great tool for DI as well as micíng a guitar cab. Or now thinking about it, running a bass through it as a DI.

@@metalprognosis or as part of a "preamp" of sorts if you drive the tube with a pedal.

@@needsLITHIUM That makes total sense, I didn't think about that until you said it. Thank you!

Very informative exercise, thank you! I recently have been recording a very good singer (who actually lives only a few doors away). I'd never done vocal recording before and I only have a Behringher 202 into GarageBand! so it was a steep learning curve. I found a cheap Mic100 online on line and bought that to boost the SM58 mic, but I had no idea how to set all the levels: mic pre-amp, audio interface, DAW, so I ended up leaving out the Mic100 just to simplify the stages.... However I also bought the Mic100 to use as a guitar pre-amp so that will be fun !

Hope you are enjoying your journey so far.
That is a really good point you make, your preamp can be used for nearly anything in the studio. I tend to reach for preamps instinctively when ever I record bass... there are so many fun and exciting ways to use preamps before the sound gets recorded, is what makes audio engineering so fun, interesting and unique.

Thanks for the review. Nice demo. Looking for something that will limit the mic output on a karaoke setup so i can avoid a war with the neighbors while still have fun. You think this thing could do it?

It should work nicely into a PA set-up for karaoke.

Was it just me or did the limiter act more like a compressor, and not the quickest, but functional. I will have to look into one of these. How does it sound on guitar?

The great thing about this little unit, is it is pretty cheap... Not sure how it is on guitar, in theory it should do really good for bass! I may have to try it out and see how they go!

that was really interesting,. and i had a look yup cheap as hell considering what it is

The truth is, if it wasn't that cheap I most likely wouldn't have got it... I buy %100 of equipment I use on this channel, and I'm far from rich haha.

That's awesome. You should get a big sound from that. I would love to try the DSM....
