- Join me for a walk around the centre of Sunderland, one of the UK's most underrated cities. Absolutely jam-packed with history and even home to some really scenic spots, Sunderland has its roots in shipbuilding. Over the centuries, this north eastern city has kept growing and growing, and is now one of the country's fastest-rising cities.
On our walk around the city centre, we pass a number of interesting sights, including the River Wear, Wearmouth Bridge, The Bridges Shopping Centre, Sunderland Station, Sunderland Museum, the Winter Gardens, Mowbray Park, Victoria Hall Disaster Memorial, the Lewis Carroll Walrus, Mowbray Park Bandstand, Sunderland War Memorial, the University of Sunderland, Sunderland Minster, Sunderland Empire Theatre, Keel Square and The Stadium of Light.

I went to University Of Sunderland. and enjoyed my time there. We would go to Durham and Newcastle for a night out on Friday. Really great memories.
I moved away from Sunderland just over 11 years ago to move to my native Cornwall, but I am getting homesick for Sunderland and would move back at the drop of a hat if I was just a little younger. Great video.
thank you for this video. i was here about 30 years ago. i went to the University of Sunderland, the Priestman Building, BA(hons) Business Computing, graduated in 1990. I rented a house in Cleveland Road for my final year, and I lived in the wearmouth hall for my first year. I played football behind the library, i shot and i broke the "glass wall" of the library, ahahahahhaaa. i remember i liked to go to Gateway to do some shopping during weekend, the beach, the fun fare, the seasides, sometimes South Shield... I went to Newcastle for dimsum on Sunday sometimes, or went to the dock for some seafood.... 30 years ago, those old days... and I am a Hong Konger.

@@pandoranaya1197 depends, Priestman Building yes, and the pharmacy department just opposite to Priestman, yes. some buildings are far away from the city center.

My wonderful home town ❤️🤍🖤. The regeneration is helping but there is still a long way to go although they are finally going to renew the railway station 👍 Hoping to move back within two years and it is my biggest hope that eventually Sunderland regains some of its former glory.

This was brilliant and so nostalgic for me having left Sunderland in 1984. It must be about ten years ago since I last visited my home town and I can see lots of improvements.
Born and bred in the town 60yrs ago, sad to see all the closed down businesses, must go home some day soon!

I'm born and raised here and the city is a shambles Run down and has been neglected over the years.A once proud town-city now has a huge identity and image problem.A victim of Labour mis rule and total govt neglect over many years.As affluent as Newcastle is Sunderland is deprived on such a grand scale.Any investment is minimal and a fraction of what is really needed to restore Sunderland city's fortunes.
This is a lovely city .Wish there were more trees around the city centre ! Residents should be very proud!
The city centre really is lovely! A few other people have mentioned the lack of trees on the streets, though I feel that the lovely Mowbray Park more than makes up for that with its rows of trees and that gorgeous lake :)

I last went to Sunderland 50 years ago ! I was always impressed by the underground railway station and so jealous of how a city could have a nice beach at Roker. I still can't tell the difference between Sunderland and Newcastle accents mind 😄
Thanks! I have to agree with you that Mowbray Park is a really wonderful space, and even better given its proximity to the city centre! There are indeed a lot of underrated features to Sunderland, although like you I'm not much of an expert on the various accents of the region, though there's certainly a very interesting story behind their many distinctions :)

I used to live in Sunderland for a few years and just as you were walking down Borough road was the number 10 bus to grangetown which was my bus!! Haha that was funny to see

How do you do? I have question about working in Sunderland ,are there enough job for student in Sunderland? How much do they pay for an hour ??? Is it difficult to find a job for a student??
Nice walkabout and a look at the historical angle of things! As a lifelong resident, the place has its upsides and downsides. The city centre can look particularly drab and depressing, and is rather outshone as a destination by the more bustling and vibrant Newcastle (and I often say Sunderland is one big commuter town for its larger sibling). However I do appreciate some of the redevelopment like the cultural quarter (home to some great restaurants that have hopefully survived the pandemic). While the city does have its rather poor and rough areas that contribute to its unfavourable reputation, it's easy to overlook the prettier parts of town - there's lots of nice open green spaces all over the wider city and larger metropolitan area, and we have a beautiful coastline, not just taking in Roker and Seaburn but extending south through to the Durham Heritage Coast. Nice to live in if you're in the right area and worth a visit at least once for the scenery.
Absolutely! Like any place in the UK Sunderland has its highs and lows, but there's certainly a lot of great things about the city that deserve to be showcased, particularly as it adapts and develops in the 21st century :)

Back in the 80's the pubs were heaving, Saturday afternoons the town was packed out, Cinemas like the ABC and Odeon had cues all the way down the road. I miss them times. Great to see it.
I was born in Sunderland. Live there till 1948.we went to Canada after the war. My dad was boot repair. Store Hilton rd

This is sort of my home town as my family live there but I wasn't born there. I now live in Prague. Sunderland may look more aesthetically pleasing but since the ship yards closed the main industry seems to be the university. Some of the finest engineers going worked in the yards and I'm sure could adapt to modern requirements. Some industrial initiative should be started to really give people employment - new office blocks to process what? Many places of business are disappearing - there used to be a thriving market at Holmeside now a desert and the unemployment rate is much higher than official figures indicate.
You did not mention Crowtreee Leisure Centre, which is demolished now, but I have many sweet memories with it. I had played a lot of squash games in it. Very sad to see it demolished. I was graduated from Sunderland University in 2004. Though I am not living in Sunderland, but it was my best time of life as a student in this city. Beautiful memories and wonderfully explained history.

I play the Empire Theatre in Novembrr1964! The city was very grim then and I can only remember one thing and that was it was dark bleak and cold. But I had some of the most beautiful photos taken of me by a local photographer. I was playing Kathie it "The Student Prince". He made me look wonderful. It was fun and encouraging to see the city today. It makes me want to go back.

I was brought up in Sunderland and lived there until I departed English shores in 1975.My family history (Wood family) in the town (city now I understand) which I have researched goes back unbroken to the 1500s and probably earlier, and most were involved with ships and marine matters one way and another. One chap in the 1800s was the Secretary of State for Marine Safety, didn't he do well? Or maybe knew the right people?
My father opened the first supermarket in Sunderland, a new idea back then - in about 1961 - where Santander Bank is today - visible from 05:40 and directly opposite the station. Around that he built a highly successful business retiring in 1969 to Malta and later to Australia.
Interesting to note that the Museum is now in the building which was the Palatine Hotel. My Dad took me there when I was a youngster but I also recall the original museum, where they had an exhibit of a massive snake coiled up in a glass case - maybe a python but I have never forgotten it's huge size, it's body being as thick as a large tree trunk!
Whilst after 46 years of absence, I still know the streets, I can recognise almost no businesses as such - all names and activities have changed. Holmeside for instance boasted many upmarket establishments, Wilson's the Tailors being one such where I used to get high quality service and gentleman's apparel of the highest quality. Overall it was a smart street and in general the town as it was then, had a good number of such retail outlets in many trades. Whilst shipbuilding and coal mining were still buoyant industries, the town prospered and it is sad to see the decline it has suffered. Let's hope that decline can be turned around!

@Stewart w..just to clear up your confusion re ...the palatine Hotel ...it isn't where the museum is . The palatine is now flats and a businesss restaurant is one the ground floor where the bar once stood. You misunderstood the video maker. The museum for now is still the grand building that it was with the steps leading up to its centre (doors firmly closed nowadays ) the glass structure with all the greenery in is attached to the side if it. So in brief the former palatine building is to the left of the path he cuts through the museum is to the right. Great walkabout video during covid19 times. No matter its state , I will always love my city (its always " the town" to me). Its beautiful. Thanks

It's a lovely city all around - I suppose in the autumn/winter the trees aren't quite as full but yes a few more in the city centre would make it even nicer :)

In my understanding, someone from Sunderland can be both a Mackem and a Geordie. I understand the term Geordie comes from the use of the Geordie lamp in the mines of both Newcastle and County Durham. Sunderland was part of county Durham at the time. The Oxford English Dictionary seems to suggest that Geordie's are not necessarily only from Newcastle.
Surprisingly nice, I always used to think that Sunderland was a suburb of Newcastle and you were all Geordies.

With a population of nearly 200,000 and at one of the hearts of the Tyne & Wear Metro, Sunderland is more often than not home to a bustling city centre - especially on matchdays when The Black Cats are playing :)
Another very enjoyable and informative video. I am from Glasgow and visited Sunderland around 20 years for a football match in the Stadium of Light. The city is nice enough but like most, we don’t see the vibrancy due to these being taken during lockdown. All towns and cities looked very sad under lockdown and let’s hope we can get that vibrancy back again. I think Sunderland is still under the shadow of its nearby neighbour Newcastle but it looks like it is on the up once again and certainly hope so because both cities deserve recognition and are populated by lovely, generous people.

The one thing that struck me was for its size the city centre and the areas depicted in the video seem really quiet and tranquil or maybe this was more to do with when it was taken ?

Hi! According to my research, the foundation stone was laid by a man named Samuel Storey in 1877! Interestingly, US President Ulysses S. Grant was also present at the ceremony. Hope that answers your question :)
The propellers, I once past out next those I was too warm I told my mother I felt faint and she told me not to be so stupid and hurry up get moving, (I'll add she uses a wheelchair) anyway I past out when security helped my mother told me if I felt unwell I only needed to have said... okayyyy. So no every time we go to the town I make a point of walking past it to remind her.🤣😂

@@LetsWalkUK Before the University, Sunderland was a drawcard for international students of Marine Engineering. I remember meeting sons of Greek shipowners, wealthy people, who came and lived in and around Sunderland whilst studying to join their family business. One rented a house in Whitburn next to a friend of mine. The Greek chap drove a brand new Marcos GT sports car - a hot item at the time, and we were suitably impressed!

We are proud to be from sunderland. Its a pity our council are not as proud of sunderland. They are destroying the town centre.. Even stopping the free parking after 3 p. m. They haven't got a clue. Surely this will stop visitors comeing into town. And spending valuable cash in the shops.
Watched the Newcastle vid and the Seahouses film and the best one the crackin Alnwick walk. But howay man...... Sunderland out the blue and without anaesthetic. Try to stay in Gods little acre North of the Tyne.
Parts of sunderland is nice but the town centre is lacking..but if we had a massive town on our knee like newcastle has with gateshead where thousands of people come into the city every day, then sunderland would probably be better, but they aint got that, only people from central sunderland go to sunderland, other parts of the city like houghton, hetton and washington have their own shopping areas and most people from there go there.

Rogker beach nice to be fair, as you're leaving Sunderland.
It's mainly multi cultural places who voted for Brexit. Due to the fact that they have been ruined by uncontrolled immigration. You are obviously lucky enough not to live in one of them.
