I find that the most chilling movies are where you don't see the monster that much as fear of an unknown monster is much scarier. Or at least one you barely see, or only have glimpses of. That or an entity kind of like in Hereditary. Or even It Follows where it takes many forms so you don't actually know what it looks like. Smile was similar but when you saw more of the monsters true form towards the end I kind of stopped being freaked out by it.

From the description here, did anyone else feel like this movie is rather similar to the 2001 movie with Tony Shalhoub called Thirteen Ghosts (or Thir13en Ghosts)? What with filling a mansion with ghosts and people being lured to the mansion by the villain in order to accomplish his goals. Most of the ghosts in the mansion are threatening to the characters, but some helpful or benign. A dead wife is a big character arc aspect for one of the characters. A dead wife is also part of the villain's schemes. And the finale requires someone to willingly die and become the final ghost. All of the ghosts also turn on the villain in the end. Furthermore, the mansion alters itself at random (a mechanism designed by the villain), trapping people in places with ghosts. However, there doesn't really seem to be a point in having this feature within the house and really just puts the people the villain wants to self-sacrifice to succeed in his plans. It's really just a means to trap people inside the mansion and then force people into and trap them specific areas with ghosts they need to escape until the next time the house rotates and the doors unlock.
While the camera lens that lets you see ghosts is a dead story device in Haunted Mansion, in Thirteen Ghosts they have special glasses handed out that everyone wears, which lets them see the ghosts and helps them avoid/escape them later.
Of course there are differences (like nobody can leave the mansion in Thirteen Ghosts and people are in constant mortal danger), the cast is smaller, the 2001 movie is suppose to be adult horror, and the villain's goals are different, but I just kept thinking about that movie throughout this review.

One of my favorite creepypastas of all time has to be "Grad Night At the Haunted Mansion", which is one of the few creepypastas I listen to time again and again due to it scaring me so bad. The thing in the story that made me legit terrified was the box hat ghost since it was implied to be an omen of death while also being an abandoned creepy animatronic.
If I am more threatened from a hat box animatronic that may or may not be an actual ghost in a story than the actual ghost in the movie, I'd say thats kind of bad.

I actually love the 2003 haunted mansion. The writers actually loved the haunted mansion ride since they made sure the movie incorporated the ride's lore and history. And the writets at least tried to make the plot seem more believable. Even if some of the events break some plot points. Like the Villian, somehow knowing the Main Character's wife was a recarnation of his master's past lover. We never get the answer on how he figured it out. But at least the movie was entertaining and made me emotional. Whether it scared me shitless due to the tomb scene with the zombies and spiders, to making me joyful seeing the graveyard scene with all the ghost partying. The characters of the 2003 film I feel are 10× better than the 2023 cast. Give and take the og film cast portrayed the generic family structure you see in 2000s films, but at least the characters had substance. The family had character development and felt like they generally cared for each other.
It's just a fun family movie that at least tried versus this unemotional crash grab.

I think the one way to improve the overwell plot atleast in the line of the ghosts, that the main ghost commends an horde of loyal spectical hounds that enchain and drag the ghost to the lower levels of the mansion, that way each ghost has atleast a reason to work for the main ghost, second the the lady who owns the house should work as an caretaker, she should say "look dont mess or tourch anything as it would make the house an mess" that way she can keep the main guy safe from any paranoire without the whole "leave this place, oh and here an hundred quid"
second each character should at least contribute something to the group, and finnaly have it reveal the main head ghost murder there wife or dughter and hired the mediam to keep em quiet, that way it would explain why the medium is there, and finnaly have the plot inside the mansion as having them leave removes the whole danger, make it sort of an countdown to 12 well the ghost powers grow more violent as time goes on.
and boom made the plot better.

At the same time, though, AI is DEFINITELY something to fear because it’s a computer that’s working at a much higher pace than humans. The problem with that, is that AI lacks creativity or soul.
Ik I give praise & adoration to folks who use voice AI to generate characters or other singers & make them sing different songs, complete with their iconic voice, but Ik it’s still a dangerous thing & something to be feared. Especially when AI can eventually destroy humanity & try to “replicate” it.
What’s wrong with movies these days, is not only are people trying to prove a point (even when I’m all for inclusivity), but they also lack originality. Movies these days are predictable, soulless & lack any real nuance.
Another problem, is the “remakes” Disney shits out are really just cashgrabs with a different coat of paint. Someone at Disney HQ is clearly moneyhungry & they’re not ashamed of it either.

Wait you're telling me a mediocre movie from 2003 starring Eddie Murphy didn't do well when we made 20 years later by old movie stars no one really cares about without the IPs that made them famous? I'm shocked!
They legitimately expect me to believe these people went to the police with 'skeleton with a top hat' and not only got a perfect rendition of what the man saw hair included but they were able to add flesh to that drawing and get an exact picture of the guy's face? Hollywood knows Bones was a show right? And even that was a bit science fiction. We all know it takes a long time to add flesh to a skeleton. That's just bullshit. That is experience destroying bullshit. Not that I was into the experience to begin with.

You have to consider that this movie is not a remake of the Eddie Murphy film, it's a reinterpretation of the Disneyland attraction. Making a movie of the Haunted Mansion is an infernal task as you have to consider the 60 years of insane lore that the attraction has (something that the Eddie Murphy film did poorly). When you see this movie, you see that it was made from a place of love from the fans, including even the smallest addition of the attraction lore like the wet footsteps of the captain (a cancelled concept from the 60s). Considering that the lore of the mansion is constantly changing, it absolutely fascinated me how clever the writers were to unite all of these broken pieces of fabric into something clean and organized. The characters were not that bad as you said. You can tell that they have bonded over the film and see themselves as a family now. Yet I have to agree with you that Owen Wilson's character wasn't that well writen, but Owen was as charismatic as always! This movie is similar to a film like The Super Mario Bros Movie in many areas, where it's specifically designed for the fans.

This movie was made by someone who didn't understand anything about the lore and decided to tell a story of what they think the Haunted Mansion is about. The original even though it flopped actually sticked close to the lore of the ride. It was scary, funny, and fun for the whole family but this one lacks all of that. Disney needs to return to hiring real talent but AI will soon be next to take up the pen.
