Hi Todd, Ida here from Topaz Labs! Great video and beautiful content. I wanted to thank you for your review by adding a year of updates to your Video Enhance AI license :)
Thanks for the video! I use this software extensively for my work and will tell you how it goes: YOU NEED a dedicated graphics card because that is where the app can do its' faster rendering. No CPU-only based computer, AMD, Intel or M1 can ever handle it properly.. no way. What is taking you 1 or 2 days to render on your M1, would just take you a couple hours on a system running a proper dedicated GPU. I have an RTX3900 running on an 10th-gen Intel based desktop, and looking at the task manager during the app's render, is usually 95%-98% being done on the GPU..the CPU is actually hardly ever touched expect for file reading/writing during the render. And mind you, with a higher budget there are way more powerful dedicated GPUs and stacked GPUs setups that one could use to dramatically speed up the app's performance. Your M1 cant cut the job no matter how many "optimizations" TopazLabs does to the code. This needs to be done on a dedicated GPU. I am on a PC of course but surely a properly configured MacPro with AMD Pro Graphics would be even much better than my humble setup. Of course, it will cost like the price of two cars but hey...... haha! Thanks again for the review :)
I own it (for cleaning up VHS transfers of home movies) and had no idea about the slow mo feature! As a fellow drone owner this is awesome...ty! Great vid.
UPDATE (11/12/2021) - Topaz Labs updated Video Enhance AI with native M1 support. In case you're curious to know if it makes a difference, I converted a 10 second 4K 24fps video to 4K 120fps using the old and new versions. Here are the results: v 2.4.0 (Rosetta): 21 seconds per frame v 2.6.0 (M1 Native): 15 seconds per frame That adds up to nearly 25 minutes less time encoding. Definitely an improvement, but as noted in my review, this mode takes A LONG TIME so be sure to plan accordingly.
Those are curiously high (in a bad way) figures. (An Intel i5 Mac processes at roughly 30seconds per frame). I saw some threads recently where people claimed to get sub-second rendering times (per frame) on M1 (pre 2021 releases). Would be interesting to see what the bottlenecks are as the documentation and input from Topaz is nothing short of being hot garbage.
Is this Topaz AI software subscription based? Or do you have to only pay a one time licensing fee…? Plus, I might as well ask the same question for the other program you briefly mentioned in this video as well….
Hey Todd, you mentioned wishing there was a way to make the Air 2S sticks less sensitive. Assuming it has a similar controller to the DJI Mini drones, the answer is to remove the sticks from the controller and use the pads of your thumbs on the control orbs directly. A lot easier to control and make tiny incremental changes.
Using VEAI to upscale and cleanup old video (8mm film, 8mm tape, Hi8mm tape, MiniDV tape, and VHS) and getting really good results. Excellent tech support.
Video Enhance AI is basically magic to me haha. Been using it for almost a year now and somehow it gets better each update. I've gotten some pretty incredible 8K results even from high bitrate 1080p footage. Not gonna lie, I'm kind of an addict.
I first tested it on some potato-vision low-res footage from a car trip dashcam that I upscaled to HD. The difference is amazing. Now I want to upscale all my old VHS tapes!
Love this program. So amazed at what I can do. As others have said, a rig with a dedicated GPU will really help. I’m using a 3090 and I’ve found that it can run two renders at the same time with only a 15 to 20 percent hit in performance vs a single stream. I do believe the native M1 version is now out and I’m interested to see how well it does.
Agreed! The app is now M1 native, and performance is a little better, but slow motion encoding still takes quite a bit of time. I think it’s just inherently intensive.
I bought this software a couple of days ago. The first thing I tried was 480p to 1080p. It looked great but did have its flaws like the video I was doing was showing a house the rough cast in the wall did not show up initially it just totally smoothed the wall but when the camera moved the rough cast appeared like magic. So at an angle the wall looked completely smooth, dead on straight the rough cast appeared again. Also noticed on the same video that the wallpaper inside the house, well the pattern was smooth and looked kind of nice but when I compared it to the original footage you could actually make out the pattern on the original video very clearly albeit it was not as smooth as the ai upscale but on the ai upscale it smoothed it out so much you could barely make out the pattern at all. But got to say everything else about it looked so much better. Especially the details in people's faces. So I think the fact you can use different models for different parts of the video may be the answer to this. At least I think you said I could do that. I used artemis medium. But won't be able to have another go of this software until tomorrow night as not at home atm. P.s I suspect maybe the grain slider may also be something that may help. Its obviously trial and error.
I didn't know that this type of software even existed, thanks for posting. I just recently started making videos, and a lot of what I have to work wit his 1080, so I'm anxious to see what this software can do to improve that old footage.
There we're a couple moments it looked a little bit too white-washed for my tastes but that TIFF thing you did improved it for what I personally enjoy.
Hey Todd, one of the reasons I bought Topaz several months ago is this video. They have just updated to version 3.0 which includes a new stabilisation utility, which works really well on certain footage. For a laugh I tried to run it on my Mac Pro (last of the intel range) 170secs per frame LOL
I started using this software last night to restore bootleg versions of obscure videos (like captures of footage intended to be exclusively played at Disney Parks) and I'm getting lots of disparate results. On tests. I have the crystal clearest version of Steamboat Willie you could ever imagine, but I've got another piece of footage that makes Michael Eisner look like a Picasso painting. I'm looking forward to doing more.
Hello friend, thanks for the video, I just watched the new version of this video and also this one, it is encouraging me to buy Topaz thanks to you, but I would also like to know what brand are the audio monitors that you see behind you in this video and how they work, they look beautiful on your desktop hehehehe, thank you again for the two videos about topaz
The ultimate solution and upgrade would be to be able to take snippets from the time-line sequentially to be able to edit and upscale what you want from the whole time line. As for now you can only do one snippet at a time.
For the first video you showed us, roughly how long does Topaz take to render say, per minute of video you upload? Is this the best software out there? Last question. Can you suggest which are the best programs I would need to stabilize shaky video? Thanks!
Thanks Todd, I have been trying to use the Video Enhance AI 30 day trial, but I can't get it to work on 3 computers I have tried, usually previews (or exports) fail with the messages: “- Error message from AI engine: download failed. - Error message from AI engine: model failed.” I 've contacted Topaz support (so I can send them DXD files for my computers), but they have not responded so far. It won't be worth buying if it won't work🤔
interesting piece of software, thanks for bringing this to our attention. might implement them to my workflow once the app is natively running on apple silicon. btw any idea when that will be?
I have it and it works well. It's far from perfect but it gets the job done. I use it mostly for converting old interlaced DV footage to Progressive. However, your render times are horrible. I run it on an RTX card and it renders video significantly faster than running it on the CPU. You need to a dedicated graphics card.
Just installed the trial version on my HP Z820 and it utilizes only one of the two processors. I'll update this comment with some stats when I have them. Edit: it took about 90 minutes for an 11 second clip using 20 threads. The resulting .mov file is audio only. Need to investigate further.

I'm interested in checking this out to upscale my old videos that were recorded in 720p years ago when tech wasn't pushing the pixels we are accustomed to today. I have a good GPU and CPU because I used my PC for gaming up until recently.

12:27 maybe if you personally dile everything in and avoid making any changes to aspects that don't really need it you could save render times? It would be an interesting thing to check. Also I think it takes a long time because it only uses de CPU on m1 Macs since GPU renders are restricted to Nvidia GPUs, hope they include support for apple silicon GPUs because in that case this could be a game changer, and go from days to hours.
Thanks for the video! I honestly recommend, by far, to have a PC with at least 8GB of VRAM dedicated GPU because it uses mooooooooooore GPU than CPU, and a 4GB graphics is very low for the program
Hmmm. While I appreciate and support an artist's quest for perfection, I have to say that the differences in either the detail/image quality or the playback quality of slow motion did not make a meaningful difference to my viewing experience. The only possible exception was the slight stutter in the water segments. I was viewing this video in the highest resolution available on RUclips, on a 4K monitor with full spectrum Adobe RGB. And without you doing the side-by-side comparison and explaining your concerns, I would never have noticed had the original clips been included in a future release. A great review of the capabilities of the Topaz software, but I think users should stop and consider when they actually need to invest that extra time and effort and expense.

best to use 2560x1080 its semi 1440 it looks almost the same and renders faster and looks almost as good as 4k
the scale I used for semi 1440 is 130 when it's a vid upscaled from 1080 and 150 when it's from 720 it locks the top and bottom but bars on side only has to be cropped in another program to get rid of
or can use 1440 full
I first read that gaia is the best but only works good for hd but cant be used all the time cause will sometimes be to sharp or give a plastic type look
so the vids I did do I rescaled em but with the art model and they come out more sharp but the thing with the art is it works best set on low but for some vids it gives the eyes a weird looking bugged look or like they have a water effect around em
so when some vids have that weird effect on low u have to use medium art but then that causes artifacts so then the only other choice is theia but it's not that sharp as art but it fixes that weird art problem
even the some vids that have that weird effect around the eyes the whole vid looks way better then orginal but even theia looks way better still then the orginal even if theia is not sharp as art
proteus can be used on any resolution if using a vid where it looks weird using the art model on low or medium use pro instead and adjust settings
if still want a sharp vid when using proteus I usually use these setting I set to auto and put noise to 20 and compression on 20

Sorry, this software is unusable! When I open a h264 video, 25fps, progressive, I've created with premiere pro, VE AI shows and renders 25.03 fps (all Models)!
I’m a first comment :) yeah !
