From the archives: Jimmy Carter installs solar panels on White House roof

On June 20, 1979, President Jimmy Carter held a dedication ceremony for the solar panels that were installed on the roof of the White House. Carter spoke about his hope to increase the use of renewable energy to replace "our dwindling supplies of fossil fuels."

This was a few years after the great oil shortage. President Carter saw the future and worked to free us from big oil. In the next election, Americans had the choice between a USN nuclear engineer with a solid vision for our energy future, and a B-movie mouthpiece for big oil who was already showing signs of dementia. reagan tore those solar panels off the White House as a "gesture." We chose popular over intelligent. And we have continued to double down on that mistake ever since.
