  • Theodor Tobler tested a new type of chocolate called Toblerone in 1908 and relied on a new innovation in the chocolate industry to distinguish his product from any other product, which is the combination of milk with honey and almond nougat.
The new chocolate recipe was first made in Bern, Switzerland, by Emil Baumann, cousin of Theodor Tobler. The name Toblerone chocolate is derived from the mixing of the name of its producer, Theodore Tobler, with the Italian word toron, which refers to a type of nougat. Tobler's triangular-top chocolate bars are inspired by the shape of the Matterhorn mountain peaks in the Swiss Alps.
Tobler registered the Toblerone trademark at the Swiss Federal Institute for Intellectual Property in Bern in 1909.
The Tobler Company merged in 1970 with the Milka Chocolate brand, Zochard, and together they formed the Interfood Company, which in 1982 merged with the Jacobs Coffee Company to form the Jacobs Tobler Zochard Company. Jacobs Tobler Zochard remained the owner of the Toblerone chocolate brand until the American Kraft Food Company, which later became Mondelez, acquired most of the brands of Jacobs Zochard, including Toblerone, in 1990
The company has added other types of chocolate besides its original product of milk chocolate with honey and almond nougat, among these types:
Toblerone dark chocolate: production began in 1968.
White Toblerone Chocolate: Production began in 1969.
Toblerne chocolate with raisins and walnuts: production started in 2007.
Toblerne Chocolate with Crunchy Almonds: Production started in 2007.
Toblerne Coconut Chocolate: started in 2015.
The Toblerone defensive line gets its name from Toblerone's chocolate as it consists of pyramid-shaped cement chains that dot the Swiss border as anti-tank weapons.
The University of Manchester student residences built in 1975 on Oxford Street are also called Toblerones, as they were designed to resemble the famous Toblerone chocolate bar.
Known as the Toblerone affair in 1995, Swedish politician Mona Salen misused her government-issued credit card to make illegal purchases of expensive items, including Toblerone chocolates. Accusations of abusing parliamentary financial privileges forced Mona Salin to retire from politics for a few years after she was a candidate for prime minister before returning later in 1998.
Toblerone (German: [tobləro: nə]) is a Swiss chocolate bar brand owned by the American confectionery company Mondelez International (formerly Kraft Foods Group).
